Our aim is first to identify the salient features of the manuals relating to their respective fields, and then to examine some of the major similarities and differences in the advice and suggestions provided by such manuals to legal drafters and to writers of scientific texts. By carrying out this task we hope to contribute to a clearer understanding of the rhetorical strategies which lie behind the production of texts in these respective fields, conditioning the ways in which such texts are written. In order to make comparisons possible it has been necessary to compile two small corpora of roughly equal size, one of legal drafting manuals, the other of scientific style manuals.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"22 1","pages":"115-137"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71266905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to the theoretical framework of lexical typology here adopted, different lexicalization strategies of the components of the conceptual structure of spatial localization events found to occur in different languages have been subsumed under the types of V-framed and S-framed languages. In V-framed languages the Path component is expressed within the verb root, as in Italian uscire; in S-framed languages it is expressed by another element in the clause, originally called the satellite, as in German ausgehen (Talmy 1991 e 2000b). However, straightforward attribution to a definite type may be challenged, as illustrated by Italian. The data considered consist of audiorecorded narratives of the Frog Story (Mayer 1969) produced by twelve tutored advanced German/Dutch and English learners of Italian L2. The analysis focuses first on the lexical types expressing intransitive motion events found in the data. In a second step, the means used by the learners for the expression of the Path of motion are analyzed: The locus of the expression can be the verbal root, an adverbial phrase or an adnominal phrase, as proposed in Walchli (2001). Further data on motion verbs from a Tigrinya learner, whose acquisition of Italian has been observed longitudinally, will be considered. In their choice of lexicalization strategies learners appear to be sensitive to the ambiguous typological position of Italian, where both V-framed and S-framed patterns are allowed, as well as to the patterns found in their L1s.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"23 1","pages":"7-26"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71267336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These letters help understand the Latin text showing both the logical order of phrases in a clause, or the logical order of the clauses in a sentence, and the logical function specific to each element. The glossator has chosen the letter a to mark the beginning of a sentence and for the verb of main clauses; while b is the letter of the subject, closely linked to the verb. The other letters underline the different elements that characterize the different clauses and their relationship. The function of the syntactic letters and the result given to the chapters of the Rule devoted to lauds and psalms – the richest in those letters – lead the interlinear gloss to a monastic centre acquainted with AEthelwold’s learning and religious plans.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"22 1","pages":"55-98"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71267309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some aspects have been focused on with regard to text type: the adverbial hereby as an indicator of performativity and the role of ‘activity verbs’ in hereby-sequences; and the occurrence of shall after a sentence containing a hereby-sequence signalling a clear separation between impersonality and personalisation of the assigned obligation. shall has also been investigated with regard to specific patterning in prescriptive text types. Finally, a few examples of collocational patterns are provided as instances of recurrent patterning in EU legal language.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"25 1","pages":"91-111"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71267381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The database is drawn from transcripts of six lessons with two groups, one beginner and one pre-intermediate, attending the same course. Results show that although recasts (see Lyster and Ranta’s categories 1997) were the most common type of corrective feedback used regardless of proficiency level, the distribution of other types of feedback varied. Moreover, the rate of corrective feedback also varied between the two groups, with the beginner group receiving a much higher rate than the pre-intermediate group. Furthermore, both pedagogical focus and participant organization also had an effect on the percentage of errors corrected and on the type of corrective feedback provided. Not surprisingly, errors made during accuracy activities were more likely to be treated than those made during activities which focused on fluency, the difference being particularly significant in the pre-intermediate group. Finally, the study highlights the role played by the students themselves in providing corrective feedback and suggests that this aspect could be the topic for further research.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"23 1","pages":"45-89"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71267256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, this view has been recently revised with the publication of specific studies dealing with the punctuation system used by ME scribes. In this line, our investigation deals with the marks of punctuation found in a late ME astrological treatise with the following objectives: a) to obtain a complete catalogue of the uses and functions of punctuation symbols found; b) to discern whether these symbols are used rhetorically or grammatically; and c) to offer a proposal for their modernization. For this purpose, MS Cambridge L1.4.14 (n. 3) has been used as source of evidence.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"22 1","pages":"99-114"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71267370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each lexeme is analysed under different points of view: attestation in the history of German; possible attestation in other Germanic and Indo-European languages; morphological and syntactic structure; meaning etc. The analysis shows that the medical-pharmaceutical vocabulary is created or identified using different cross-strategies (word formation, loanwords, loan translations; sense extension and delimitation on the basis of the conceptual fields involved and/or the syntagmatic relations between lexemes). A part of the corpus is formed by hapax legomena; some words have either died out or become archaic in Modern German, others have undergone sense extensions or restrictions. As a matter of fact, only a few terms still maintain the same meaning as in the Arzneibuch.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"22 1","pages":"19-53"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71266635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The emerging directions concern on one side the feasible inclusion of probabilistic analysis of variation into a model of grammatical competence (probabilistic sociolinguistics), on the other side the workable combination of ethnographic methods and quantitative analysis within the same research design (variation ethnography). Within this picture the basic features of Varbrul’s latest PC version (Goldvarb 2001) will be illustrated, emphasizing advantages and drawbacks.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"20 1","pages":"31-69"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2005-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71266534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This principle, original to psychology and anthropology, is now widely acknowledged by all research fields with a cognitive orientation, from sociology to linguistics, to artificial intelligence. In linguistics such a principle has been taken into consideration by script theory (Schank / Abelson 1977), which investigates the ways meaning comes into being from the setting of semantic possibilities activated by lexematic ‘handles’ (Attardo 2001: 3). Such an approach, which proved effective especially in studying humour (see Raskin 1985), focuses exclusively on the semantic level of the semiotic phenomenon, completely obliterating the possibility that also formal features in a communicative move might contribute, even if peripherally, to the organization of meaning. Our claim is that the form of a text (i.e., its format, layout, syntactic organization, etc.) is not neutral as to its processing, but contributes to the orientation of the hermeneutic process. The hypothesis of formal scripts that we introduce in this article maintains that, given a set of particular formal features, a script is activated, according to which it is possible to make sound inferences as to the general meaning, or semantic orientation, and purpose of a text even before starting to process it (or, at least, before processing it in its integrity). The aim of this article is to provide a sound theoretical basis to our hypothesis – relying on the main concepts of script theory (Schank / Abelson 1977) and of genre analysis (Swales 1990, 2004; Bhatia 1993, 2004) – and, subsequently, to outline examples of formal scripts activated by textual formal features.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"1 1","pages":"101-125"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2005-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71266989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
