Special attention will be given to the rhetorical strategies that convey negative evaluative acts, whose realisations may reflect both the genre and the different interpersonal understanding of the academic communities involved. The results point to interesting convergences/divergences between the two halves of the corpus and in the rhetorical and linguistic resources employed by English-speaking authors, as compared to their Italian colleagues.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"1 1","pages":"71-99"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2005-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71266596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This proposal becomes particularly crucial in consideration of the problematic dynamic between, on the one hand, the European multilingual language policy and, on the other, the non-coincidence between linguistic systems. This tension has given rise to a debate between those who see multilingualism as a problem or a concrete obstacle to a common EU system of law (Braselmann 2002, Baron 2003) and those who are more positive about such a possibility (Kjaer 2004, Engberg 2004a, 2004b). This study aims to propose linguistic and pragmatic tools with which it will be possible to define levels of equivalence (Koller 1979, 1995), and to qualify and quantify differences, highlighting possible trends among them, so as to provide meaningful data and sound bases for a circumstantiated and unprejudiced discussion of the possibility of a felicitous multilingual translation of the European Constitution.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"21 1","pages":"147-183"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2005-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71266662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specialization in linguistics, matched by a growing bond between language and social policies, may well be a sign of the times. On the other hand, compartmentalization in or through language is hard to sustain given the growth of inter-communication between specialists or a genuine social pressure to ‘translate’ the technical (professional, cryptic) into the common (practical, popular or socially functional). Such mediation of discourses is also enhanced by the expectations of modern democratic societies that are becoming more open, educated, mobile and technologically capable. It gains additional impact from mediatization of discourses and commodification of information. The present paper looks at such osmotic traces in specialist communication in the legal domain. A case in point is a recent failure in a legal procedure in Poland, an apparent ‘error’ in the Media Bill, and its link to a corruption scandal. The paper gives a comprehensive analysis of how the legislative procedure was reconstructed during the hearings, and how it was covered in the media. The major purpose of the paper is to show how power in legal document design is discursively constructed, redefined, allocated and denounced. Given the lamination of social roles and identities, it is shown how various actors in the social construction of the law dispute authority and responsibility. It is illustrated how, under pressure, the responsibility of the lawmaker is laminated away from the institution, and ‘diluted’ in a detective-style of reconstruction of the events.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"20 1","pages":"127-155"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2005-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71266859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Whereas most research on the process of legal decision-making considers argumentation from the point of view of legal theory and legal philosophy, emphasis is laid here on the role of language in the construction of argumentation, and in particular on features of auxiliary argumentative lexis such as connectives and meta-argumentative expressions. First of all, the paper will discuss the methodology of the project, which will be carried out on a corpus of 221 judgments (1,646,182 words) issued by three courts. Secondly, it will focus on the use of the meta-argumentative expressions ground and reason from a three-fold perspective: textual function, genre structure and argumentative voice. The results presented by the paper will show that ground and reason act as effective argumentative signals in the judicial text.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"20 1","pages":"157-178"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2005-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71266879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has been a matter, especially in the case of Old English, hardly studied by scholars. Thus, our knowledge about punctuation marks is somewhat restricted to just a few contributions (Harlow 1959; Mitchell 1980; Calle / Miranda Forth). However, in the last decade a number of studies dealing with medieval punctuation has come out shedding light on the use of scribal practices at the time. In this same line, we deal with the punctuation system found in the West-Saxon version of the Gospel according to Saint John to offer a detailed description of the use and function of the scribal marks of punctuation, and to find the correspondence with their modern counterparts. A corpus-based study of the text helps to classify the different examples and to reach grounded conclusions about the coherence of the punctuation symbols used.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"21 1","pages":"29-44"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2005-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71266787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By focussing on spontaneously produced letters it will be possible to study an individual’s most informal styles of writing. Such letters are not easily found, due to the fact that during the eighteenth century letter writing was considered an art, with rules dictating the requirements for what were considered good letters at the time. The paper sets out a number of criteria that have to be met for letters to be suitable for sociolinguistic analysis. The approach advocated proceeds from the individual writer, as part of a larger social network. From this perspective, it is possible to concentrate on various topical issues in sociolinguistics, including macro as well as micro-level analyses as well as socio-pragmatic studies. An inventory of currently available editions of eighteenth-century correspondence collections is presented, published as an open-access online database, with requirements for new enterprises in this respect. It is argued that when new correspondence collections are published, attention should be given to the needs of historical sociolinguistic researchers alongside the more traditional reading public.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"21 1","pages":"113-146"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2005-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71266611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moroni","doi":"10.6092/LEF_20_P7","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.6092/LEF_20_P7","url":null,"abstract":"In the literature (e.g. Kriwonossow 1977, Hentschel 1986, Thurmair 1989, Meibauer 1994) the syntactic features of German modal particles have often been discussed, but the question of their syntactic aspects still remains open. Even though there is a widely-held consensus that German modal particles can only occur in the Middle Field, the principles ruling their distribution within this field are not clear. After a summary of the current state of research, focussing on those studies that have investigated the relation between the position of modal particles and the theme-rheme structure, this article presents an analysis of the distribution of German modal particles in the constituent order of the Middle Field in example sentences taken from a German crime story. The results of this analysis show that a pure syntactic approach cannot explain modal particles’ movements within the Middle Field so that a new approach based on the interaction between Syntax and Prosody is needed.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"20 1","pages":"7-30"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2005-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71266555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
