The history of Icelandic has clearly to be considered as a continuum, but it is widely attested that between 1300 and 1650 a larger amount of changes deeply transformed the Icelandic language, especially from the phonetic and phonological point of view. In order to contribute to the research in this field I chose as a concrete approach the study of two manuscripts containing the Kristni saga: AM 371 4to (ca. 1310) contained in the Hauksbok and a copy of the text contained in AM 105 fol (ca. 1650) and transcribed by the reverend Jon Erlendsson. The medieval original and the 16th c. copy of the saga were produced right before and right after this period of deep phonetic and phonological changes. This aspect is a fundamental basis in the comparative analysis of Kristni saga exemplar and copy. Jon Erlendsson’s peculiarity as a scribe resides in the fact that he is considered by contemporary philologists as the first one who tried to reproduce in a faithful way the Old Icelandic orthography. Jon aimed at an accurate reproduction of Old Icelandic orthography although he probably did not have any philological education and technique and his 17th c. pronounciation remarkably diverged from the pronounciation at the beginning of the 14th c. Given this, the aim of my study is to to understand if Jon manages to faithfully copy AM 371 fol. I argue for a negative answer and this research aims at confirming it.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"24 1","pages":"183-204"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2007-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71267111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each language is investigated as L1 as well as L2 with respect to Italian on the basis of a large data base. The informants described a picture to a listener who couldn’t see it. Our cross-linguistic comparison demonstrates, in agreement with Carroll et al. (2000), that the options found in the expression of reference maintenance in a static spatial task reflect distinct principles of typological nature, which are associated with different patterns of grammaticalisation: a. Germanic languages share some adverbial means of discourse cohesion (Engl. here/ there..; Ger. hier/da/dort/daneben..; Swed. da/dar/har/har/bredvid..) that are not exploited by Romance languages native speakers, although they too have some equivalent means at their disposal in the lexical repertoire of their L1s (It. qui/qua/li/la/li vicino..; Fr. ici/la/la dessous.. ; Sp. aqui/aca/ahi/alli/alla/aqui cerca..); b. structures in language which reflect core principles in information organisation are difficult to acquire since learners have to recognize clusters of form-function relations which range over different domains; c. learners tend to employ L1 cohesive means, which proves the enormous difficulty they have in reviewing their L1 “perspective”. L1 data show that Germanic languages focus – even though in different ways – on the concept of “space” via the selection of the means quoted above, in contrast with the Romance speakers, who seem to pay attention to “objects” in a stricter way, by marking the reference maintenance by full prepositional phrases or their equivalents. As to L2 data, they show that learners shape the selection of information and cohesive linguistic means by the “space oriented” or “object oriented” perspective imposed by their L1.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"25 1","pages":"125-205"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2007-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71267354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It con cludes with a lexicographic definition and an analysis of opposing traits in relation to assimilable figures, including the gnome, the chreia and the “memorable” (apomnemoneuma). Within this perspective, the recovery of the progymnastic tradition has led to the recognition of the importance of the influence of this didactics on the development of modern rhetoric, on Baroque oratory and on Jesuit educational theory, thanks to the contributions of Portuguese scholars Manuel Alexandre Jr and Anibal Pinto de Castro. Further, Teone’s text renders explicit the pos sibilities of widening chreia and gnome, and allows a like wise certain and productive elaboration of the proto-narrative elements pro posed by the exercises themselves.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"23 1","pages":"113-150"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71267414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two films and a drama have come or are about to come out between this year and the next. Beowulf’s reception in the 20th century is not as rich as Ulysses’, for example, but there are several works that rewrite the Old English story. Two of them are taken into account in the article: the Italian comic Beowulf. Leggenda cristiana dell’antica Danimarca (1940/1941) by Enrico Basari, and the American novel Grendel (1971) by John Gardner. Two quite different works: on the one hand a graphic novel created under a strong Catholic ideology during the Fascist (and the Second World War) period of Italian history, on the other hand a novel written in the so-called Postmodern area, showing a radical deconstruction of internal ideologies and identity narrations. However, the two works can be compared, because both have clear bonds with the ages in which they were written, and are deeply rooted in the cultural background that has produced them. From the analysis of the contemporary rewritings we can understand if the old story and its characters are still living and productive, and we can learn something more about the medieval poem.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"23 1","pages":"211-229"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71267143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The corpus consists of nine glosses: four verbs (ammonet-leret, suscitet-mundere, existit-hist, grassantur-grimment), three nouns (livor-smerza, percussione-harinscara, propitiationem-pisuneda) and two adverbs (minime-nuith, gratis-undurftis). The graphical differences underscore the fact that these glosses were written by different hands, so it is impossible to attribute an exact dating to the whole corpus. However, some of them, such as leret, mundere and undurftis, show phonetic changes occurring in Notker, therefore we might suppose that they probably date back to the 10th century. The relationship between lemma and interpretamenta shows congruence both in semantics and in the form. The grammatical structures of the lemmas and those of the interpretamenta are perfectly respected. The glosses are all generally frequent but not smerza and undurftis, which exclusively occur, as glosses, in this corpus.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"23 1","pages":"187-209"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71267052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
