Heidelberg wat na 1902 in 'n belangrike onderwyssentrum in Transvaal ontwikkel het, het gedurende die Anglo-Boereoorlog gehelp om die grondslag vir 'n effektiewe naoorlogse onderwysstelsel, gebaseer op die Britse model, te vestig. In hierdie artikel word gepoog om die positiewe in die kamponderwys wat die Britse onderwysowerhede tot stand gebring het, onder die leser se aandag te bring. During the war Heidelberg, which was to develop into an important educational centre in the Transvaal after 1902, helped to lay the foundation for an effective post-war educational system, based on the British model. In this article it is endeavoured to bring to the attention of the reader the positive aspects of the educational system that the British authorities established in the concentration camps. The camp schools stimulated the camp children's thinkings processes and helped to open new worlds to them. The existence of the camp school system supports the viewpoint that life in the concentration camps did not revolve solely around death and disease. Despite this, the Heidelberg parents regarded teaching with Dutch as medium of instruction so important that they rebelled against English as the sole medium and established the Volkskool in the town. Fictional and non-fi ctional reconstructions of the Great Trek have been a signifi cant dimension of South African cultural history since the late nineteenth century. The majority of novels about that phenomenon have been written by Afrikaners. However, the eminent English (and by adoption South African) novelist Francis Brett Young published his They seek a country in 1937, a year before the centenary of the Great Trek, and in it he created British and Afrikaans characters who did not fall neatly into conventional ethnic stereotypes of heroes and villains featured by some theories of colonial discourse. Dit toon aan dat die toenemende neiging om ekonomiese ontwikkeling in die provinsie te konsentreer, ’n impak op die terreine het deurdat hulle dikwels beskadig word. ’n Bespreking word gegee van heilige terreine soos Motouleng (tussen Fouriesburg en Clarens), Mautse (tussen Rosendal en Ficksburg) en Matsopa (in Modderpoort naby Ladybrand). Ten slotte stel die skrywer voor dat die langtermyn lewensvatbaarheid van die terreine ’n interaktiewe benadering vereis tussen die plaaseienaars waar die terreine gelee is en die mense wat dit besoek. The main focus of this article is to highlight the history and culture of the sacred sites in the Free State Province. The Free State has many such sites, particularly in the eastern part of the province. The most important ones to be discussed in this article are the following: Motouleng (between Fouriesburg and Clarens), Mautse (between Rosendal and Ficksburg) and Mantsopa (at Modderpoort near Ladybrand). As sentrale vraagstelling geld die volgende: hoe doen outeurs van historiese romans (en hier Van Rooyen in die besonder) verantwoording van en betuig hulle hulle skatpligtigheid teenoor tekste wat as bronne in die roman gedien het - of as inspirasiebron (wat hier die geval blyk te wees) of ter wille van die waarheidsgetroue historiese inkleding van die roman? Laastens toon die outeur aan dat die delikate balans tussen teks en bronteks miskien duideliker aangedui kan word deur outeurs van populere historiese fiksie, selfs al word die saak nie op die selfbewuste wyse as in postmodernistiese fiksie gehanteer nie.\u0000Use of sources for popular historical novels, with special reference to Engela van Rooyen and Oswald Pirow\u0000This paper focuses on the influence that an almost unknown Afrikaans novel, Mlungu Mungoma by Oswald Pirow, (published in 1949) had on aspects regarding characterisation and plot in the popular historical novel Vuur op die horison by Engela van Rooyen (2000). The connection between these two novels and the questions that are raised concerning certain characteristics of the historical novel - more specifically the popular historical novel as opposed to clearly postmodern novels - is investigated. \u0000The principal problem statement is the following : in what way or ways do authors of popular historical novels (and in this instance Van Rooyen in particular) give recognition to and admit indebtedness to a text or texts that were used as sources - either as sources of inspiration (which is the case here) or for the historical presentation of the novel? Die skool het geleidelik meer studente, ook uit die buiteland, getrek. Die primere doel van die navorsing was om vas te stel of Suider-Afrikaanse studente aan die skool studeer het, soos wat dit by die konservatoriums in Amsterdam, Leipzig en Wene, die Royal College of Music in Londen, die Stern-Konservatorium in Berlyn en die Hochschule fur Musik in Berlyn die geval was. Verrassenderwys het slegs ses studente met Suider-Afrikaanse verbintenisse tussen 1872 en 1939 aan die Musiekskool in Weimar gestudeer. The Music School in Weimar, one of the most famous music towns of the world, was founded in 1872. It gradually attracted more students and also more foreigners. The first aim of the research was to establish whether there were Southern African students at this school as there were at the conservatories in Amsterdam, Leipzig and Vienna, the Royal College of Music in London, the Stern Conservatorium in Berlin and the Hochschule fur Musik in Berlin. Surprisingly, only six students with Southern African connections were found at the Music School in Weimar between 1872 and 1939. They are Maria Adamson (Cape Town), Myrtha and Ursula Noyce (Heidelberg, Transvaal), Johanna (Joan) van Niekerk (Uitenhage), Thyra Nissen-Lass (Windhoek) and Anna Maria Bach (Windhoek). None of these students was mentioned in the programmes of student concerts. One must assume that they were not of a standard to perform in public with the other students. But the extremely active music life at the Music School and in the town of Weimar would have provided them with additional musical experience. This versatile background would have been to their advantage as musicians later in their lives. The spotlight falls on two mass-marches which Afrikaner women organised in respectively 1915 and 1940 to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. In addition to the background to and causes of the marches, the events themselves and the results of the marches, an investigation is undertaken into cultural aspects of these demonstrations : the background of the organisers, the way in which they were in those days identified in the press, the nature of the language used in their statements and petitions, the religious milieu in which the marches were undertaken and the attire of the participants. Public and press reaction to the marches, including the writing of poems on them, are also focussed on. Ten tyde van sy dood was hy 'n\u0000student aan die Royal College of Music (RCM) in Londen waar hy in September 1916, tydens\u0000die Eerste Wereldoorlog, begin studeer het. Fagan sou in daardie tyd baie berigte oor die oorlog en die dood van RCM-studente moes aanhoor. In The R.C.M. Magazine sou hy Gurney se melankoliese gedigte, aangestuur van die front af, kon lees. Dit was oorspronklik 'n volledige genoteerde Armeense gesangeboek (sharakan) maar is herbind voordat dit na Suid-Afrika gekom en in 1897 deur president Kruger gekoop is. In die proses het die blaaie deurmekaar geraak en 'n paar het verlore gegaan. Dit is nietemin 'n merkwaardige manuskrip omdat president Kruger dit by 'n Armenier gekoop het wat van die moord op Armeniers in Turkye gevlug het, kort voordat ook hý sy land moes verlaat. Verder is die manuskrip ook uniek, gesien in die lig van die vroee datum daarvan en dat dit in Suid-Afrika voorkom, waar geen ander Armeense en baie min Westerse Middeleeuse manuskripte voorkom. Hierdie artikel ondersoek en beskryf die manuskrip in besonderhede en plaas dit in konteks met ander Armeense gesangeboeke. Dit is op grond van die styl van die skrif, die notasie en veral die inligting in 'n kolofon gedateer.
