Abstract

'Mothers of the people' in protest : Afrikaner women march in Pretoria, 1915 and 1940 This article investigates the participation of Afrikaner women in resistance politics in the era before apartheid. The spotlight falls on two mass-marches which Afrikaner women organised in respectively 1915 and 1940 to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. In addition to the background to and causes of the marches, the events themselves and the results of the marches, an investigation is undertaken into cultural aspects of these demonstrations : the background of the organisers, the way in which they were in those days identified in the press, the nature of the language used in their statements and petitions, the religious milieu in which the marches were undertaken and the attire of the participants. Public and press reaction to the marches, including the writing of poems on them, are also focussed on. Finally attention is given to references to the participants as "mothers of the nation" and to the legacy of the marches.
