The characterisation of the Colonial British and the Voortrekkers in Francis Brett Young’s "They seek a country" (1937)
Fictional and non-fi ctional reconstructions of the Great Trek have been a signifi cant dimension of South African cultural history since the late nineteenth century. The majority of novels about that phenomenon have been written by Afrikaners. However, the eminent English (and by adoption South African) novelist Francis Brett Young published his They seek a country in 1937, a year before the centenary of the Great Trek, and in it he created British and Afrikaans characters who did not fall neatly into conventional ethnic stereotypes of heroes and villains featured by some theories of colonial discourse. The ethnic characterisation is analysed in the historical context of the publication of this work.
