Beter bekend as Nakie was sy vir bykans 70 jaar deel van die bekende en welgestelde Fichardt-familie van Bloemfontein nadat sy in 1880 deur Gustav Fichardt in Engeland as goewernante vir sy kinders gewerf is. Sy was vir die Fichardt-kinders soos ’n tweede ma en hulle sou haar tot haar dood koester. Daarbenewens het sy die familie se lief en leed gedeel en hulle deeglik onderskraag in al die ellende wat hulle soos tydens die Anglo-Boereoorlog (1899-1902) deurgemaak het. Hoewel Engelssprekend was sy net soos die Fichardts ’n groot voorstander van Afrikanerbelange en het sy sy aan sy met die bekende Emily Hobhouse na die vroue en kinders in die konsentrasiekampe omgesien. In die Fichardts se invloedryke kringe is sy vanwee haar welmenendheid en vriendelikheid deur almal met die hoogste respek aanvaar. Geen wonder nie – met haar dood is sy in die  familiebegraafplaas op die plaas Brandkop begrawe. The museum and ruin is situated close to the new Phabeni gate. The first phase of the project was to do archaeological excavations on the site in order to obtain information to be used in the planned museum. The excavations indicated that the ruin was a mess due to uncontrolled restoration done since the original excavation of the site in 1978-1979. This complicated the research as these aspects had to be interpreted with the original building material of the building. When excavations are done on historical sites, it is always necessary to do basic historical research in order to understand the historical context of the site. This historical background is presented in this article. This, mostly known information is supplemented by new information obtained through the research. Aspects related to the building style and building material of the ruin is also included. Urban heritage conservation in South Africa is further impeded by the related problems of urban form, political will, difficulties in implementation and a problematic socio-economic context. These issues are explored and innovative case studies in urban heritage conservation in Port Elizabeth and Graaff-Reinet that address these issues, are described and evaluated. Notions regarding a possible strategy for urban conservation are discussed. Bell-Robinson was part of the Milner scheme to implement the English school system in the Free State after the Anglo-Boer War. However, she was an 'Irish Rebel' who opposed and obstructed any efforts that stood in the way of the social upliftment of the women and children.\u0000Bell-Robinson kept a correspondence with one of her former pupils, Hendrik van Loon, who became a historian of note and an international literacy celebrity in the United States during the early twentieth century.\u0000The article provides a rare glimpse into the correspondence between Van Loon and Bell-Robinson. The arrival in the Western Cape of specifically the last two “waves” of German immigrants was both the result of the Hermannsburg “Bauernmission” – “agricultural missionary society” – as well as a specifi c immigration drive by the British colonial government to recruit specifi cally Germans to populate various areas of the Western and Eastern Cape colonies, which coincided. This article discusses the history of the resultant Philippi German farming community – a typical “Bauernsiedlung” – and the irony of their religio-cultural legacy and a new generation of (im)migrants to the Western Cape. Despite their demographic insignifi cance, and contrary to popular belief, they have been an integral part of this country’s multicultural identity since the inception of European hegemony in the Cape in the latter half of the seventeenth century. This article proposes to take a closer look at the presence and cultural identity of the Chinese community in the colonial Cape. While remaining a physically and culturally identifi able and relatively insular group, they were later to become one of the fi rst communities in South African history to be singled out and discriminated against in a blatantly racist manner. It will be argued that besides their own markers of cultural identity, the manner in which they were portrayed, perceived of, treated and discriminated against, contributed to their cultural visibility and in turn possibly entrenched a cultural cohesion Keywords : Overseas Chinese; culture; identity; Cape Colony; minorities; DEIC; intergroup relations","PeriodicalId":40076,"journal":{"name":"South African Journal of Cultural History","volume":"23 1","pages":"1-18"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70617977","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Marais (1871-1936), the famous Afrikaans poet, prose writer, journalist, lawyer, morphinist and expert on animal behaviour, spent three years in the Boland, a region in the Western Cape of South Africa, where he completed his schooling. The available information about this period introduces the reader to Marais’s Huguenot roots and crucial infl uences during his youth such as his early writing and journalism, the then debating societies and people becoming aware of language rights. A few of Marais’s short stories were set in the Boland or show traces of this background. The fact that Marais was able to become a successful journalist at a very young age shortly after he left the Boland to settle in Pretoria in the former Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR), also testifi es that his formative years as a pupil of the current Hoer Jongenskool Paarl were very fruitful, as was exposure to the region’s educational and cultural life. Eugene N. Marais (1871–1936), die beroemde Afrikaanse digter, prosaskrywer, joernalis, regsgeleerde, kenner van dieregedrag en morfi nis, het drie jaar lank in die Boland, in die Wes-Kaap van Suid-Afrika, deurgebring en daar sy skoolopleiding voltooi. Die beskikbare inligting oor hierdie tydperk laat die leser kennis maak met Marais se Hugenote-wortels en deurslaggewende invloede soos sy vroee skryfwerk en joernalistiek, die destydse debatsverenigings en bewuswording van taalregte. ’n Aantal van Marais se kortverhale speel ook in die Boland af of vertoon spore van hierdie agtergrond. Die feit dat Marais in staat was om op ’n baie vroee leeftyd ’n suksesvolle joernalis te word kort nadat hy die Boland verlaat het om hom in die eertydse Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR) te vestig, getuig daarvan dat sy vormende jare as ’n leerling aan die huidige Hoer Jongenskool Paarl en blootstelling aan die streek se opvoedkundige en kulturele lewe baie vrugbaar was.","PeriodicalId":40076,"journal":{"name":"South African Journal of Cultural History","volume":"23 1","pages":"74-89"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70617747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
