There is little information on the perception of traditional medicine practitioners towards formal sources of information and the preservation of their knowledge and practice. The study sought to investigate the perceptions of traditional medicine practitioners towards formal information sources and their perceptions towards the storage of their medicinal knowledge in these formal sources in Delta State, Nigeria. Four research questions guided the study and the descriptive survey design was employed. A self-structured questionnaire was used to gather data from 82 traditional medicine practitioners in Delta State. The study found that the commonest form of traditional medicine practiced in the state is herbal. The practitioners rely mostly on oral information sources and their perception of formal sources of information is very low. In addition, the traditional medicine practitioners are not interested in having their knowledge of traditional medicine captured and stored in formal sources because they feel that their knowledge about traditional medicine is sacred and cannot be written down or recorded. Among others, the study recommended the need for an awareness campaign to be carried out by public and medical libraries in Delta State, to sensitise traditional medicine practitioners about information resources that are of relevance to them that are available in libraries.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"959 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121710462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is an established relationship between academic performance and the quality of graduates from universities. Consequently, high academic performance will improve the quality of services that will be rendered by university graduates and vice-versa. This makes academic performance to be crucial for a professional course like Library and Information Science (LIS), therefore, necessitating the need for the evaluation of the academic performance of LIS undergraduates in Nigeria. Hence, a descriptive research design was adopted for this study and 14 universities from the federal, state and private categories in the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, were enumerated. The proportionate sampling technique was adopted to select 40% of 200 to 400 Level LIS undergraduates in each university, making a total of 1526. Primary and secondary data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics like percentages, frequencies, pie charts and columns. The result showed that the academic performance of most of the LIS undergraduates was on average. Thus, much is still desired to improve the quality of the academic performance of the LIS undergraduates. Therefore, the need for an enhanced attitude toward learning to raise quality librarians and information professionals.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"285 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122474106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After more than 20 years of OA advocacy and development, where do things stand? Has the noble goal of universal access been realized, and is the scholarly literature now accessible and open to the global community of scholars? How strong is the current OA movement and where is it headed? While significant advances have been made, to be sure, the fact is that elements of OA have taken a wrong turn somewhere, resulting in a system that is broken and has not lived up to its promise. Early OA efforts focused on the need for better access to read and reuse scholarly literature. While significant advancement has been made in this area, it has created another barrier to the free and open sharing of scholarly research–access for authors to publish their research. This is especially problematic for those without the means or support to participate in the “pay to publish” model of OA that has become dominant. There is still hope to correct this imbalance, but the scholarly community must refocus and recalibrate its efforts to get back on track.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133149612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study assessed the research support services provided by selected public universities in Southwest Nigeria. The survey research design was adopted using a questionnaire as an instrument for data collection. The population of the study comprised 12 librarians from 12 different public university libraries. All 12 copies of the questionnaire were distributed and 11 were usably retrieved. Findings reveal that the services provided are under general services, training services and publishing services which show that up to 50% of the research support services listed in the study are provided. Also, results show the services provided by the selected university libraries reveal the extent to which the services are being provided for research support. For general services, training services and publishing services, the university libraries provided about 50% of the services under study at about 50% high extent. The recommendation is that public universities should commit more funding to further providing and sustaining research support tools, and facilities in the selected libraries.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128975673","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper sought to address the following objectives: to establish the forms of book piracy practiced; to establish the existing legal frameworks and efforts to curb book piracy; investigate the level of awareness of the legal framework among book printers and its implications on book piracy; to examine the scope of counter-piracy enforcement powers and the law; to identify the setbacks in the enforcement of the legal framework on book piracy. A case study research design and qualitative research paradigm were adopted. Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), unstructured interviews and Document reviews were the data collection methods. The study findings reveal that: duplication, circumventing e-Books and plagiarism are the common forms of book piracy practiced; the legal and institutional frameworks are in place putting in efforts such as awareness and sensitization, engagement with universities, and promotion of the use of holograms; book printers were found to be moderately aware of the legal framework, but they were not deeply knowledgeable of many provisions of the laws; the laws as they are, are ineffective. The setbacks in the enforceability included: the high cost of registration, difficulty in differentiating between genuine and pirated books. The study concludes that different forms of book piracy are practiced in Uganda and that efforts are being undertaken to avert the practice. The study recommends the revision of the existing legal framework; adoption and promotion of security features and restructuring of the copyright registration process among others.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128420409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In carrying out this study three research questions were posed. A social survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised librarians and para-professional staff working in the special libraries. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze data using frequency counts, tables and percentages. The findings showed that the libraries face diverse problems in the acquisition of library materials. These include lack of acquisition policy, inadequate funds, high cost of foreign materials, poor quality of locally published materials, poor communication services, poor bibliographic control and poor management of funds. It also revealed that several factors were found to be militating against the effective provision of library service delivery to users in the selected special libraries. These include lack of Information and Communication Technology tools and compliance, inadequate funding, poor infrastructure and inadequate human resources.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133179661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dei, Citizen Francis Tetteh","doi":"10.4314/glj.v27i1.11","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4314/glj.v27i1.11","url":null,"abstract":"The study sought to assess the adoption and use of open-sourced software (OSS) in academic libraries in Ghana, specifically, find out the types, user-friendliness, the extent of use, advantages, and limitations of OSS within the academic library domain. This study adopted the descriptive survey and mixed research approach to collect data from 12 academic libraries that have adopted open-source software for managing their resources. The purposive sampling strategy was adopted to select 10 respondents (comprising the head of libraries, head and staff of the IT units of the libraries, and heads of the other units such as electronic resources, cataloging, classification, and referencing, among others) from each of the 12 libraries. Questionnaires (consisting of both closed-ended and open-ended questions) were used to collect primary data directly from the respondents. The study revealed that Koha, DSpace, Destiny, NewGenLib, Evergreen ILS, Fedora, WordPress, and Drupal were the open-sourced software deployed and used in the libraries and provided lots of advantages to the libraries. The open-sourced software was largely found to be easy to acquire, install, update, modify, use, operate; user-friendly; and more reliable and accessible. However, the use of open-sourced software in the libraries is mitigated by some limitations which include lack of continuous training on the use of the open-sourced software and inability of the open-sourced software; lack of expertise to train and manage the software among others. These limitations need to be addressed to alleviate their negative impact on the library. The research focused on the adoption and use of OSS in academic libraries in Ghana. Although the findings of the study are similar to perceptions and practices from researchers around the world, they can not be used as a basis for generalization across other scientific disciplines and settings. The study concludes that the deployment and use of OSS in academic libraries to manage its processes and functions are speedily changing the frontiers of the libraries. It is relevant in achieving optimal efficiency at a minimal cost in the library. The management of the libraries should put measures and policies to realize these benefits and arrest the challenges faced by the use of OSS.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124354382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many studies have examined media resource utilization by lecturers in the universities but few have researched this topic in the context of colleges of education especially those that are state-owned. Therefore, the present study investigated the frequency of media resource utilization in state-owned colleges of education in South-West Nigeria. The study is anchored on Media Richness Theory. A multi-stage procedure was adopted to select 812 lecturers for the study. Data were collected through a validated and reliable structured questionnaire with a Cronbach alpha coefficient = 0.96. Data was subjected to descriptive statistics of frequency counts, mean, percentage and standard deviation. The results reveal that textbooks, (x̅=4.45) ranked highest among the print media resources, chalk/whiteboard, ( x̅=4.01) ranked highest among the non-media resources and radio, (x̅ =3.69) was the most frequently used electronic media resource by lecturers in the colleges of education. It is recommended that the college authority should work in collaboration to make sure seminars and workshops on media resources utilization are constantly organized for lecturers to improve their skills in the use of media resources for teaching and learning.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126821270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
