The research design used in this study is a descriptive survey. The research population comprises the total number of undergraduate students registered with each of the libraries of the three selected universities in North Central, Nigeria. The University of Abuja Library had two thousand and seventeen (2,017) registered users, Federal University of Technology Minna, Library had two thousand four hundred and forty (2,440), and Kwara State University Malete library had four thousand eight hundred and twenty-four (4,824). This brings the total number of undergraduate library users registered with the three university libraries to 9,281. The sample size for the study was established using the random sampling table published by Israel in 1992. The table provided 200 for a population of 10,000 at ±7% Precision level and 95% confidence level. Therefore, 200 respondents were selected randomly which represent a cross-section of the population in each of the three selected universities in North Central. The instrument used to collect data was a structurally designed questionnaire. To ensure clarity of expressions and appropriateness of language used, the instrument went through face validation from some lecturers in library and information science in the selected universities. Reliability Test measurement yielded a value of 0.71 for Cronbach’s Alpha. A total number of two hundred (200) copies of the questionnaire were distributed randomly to the selected samples from the three selected institutions. Out of this, one hundred and twenty (120) copies, forty from each university library, were successfully filled, retrieved and found usable for the analysis, giving a response rate of 60%. The data generated from the questionnaire were analysed using descriptive statistics. Results were then presented in tabular forms and charts using simple percentages and frequency counts to facilitate a better understanding of the proportions in terms of particular responses. The study concluded that undergraduate students in the three selected university libraries prefer OPAC over the card catalogue; and that despite the availability of the OPAC many students still patronized the card catalogue, which means that in terms of patronage the gap between the OPAC and card catalogue is not that much. A periodic user education program for undergraduate students should be organized by the library management. This will give them the knowledge and abilities they need to find books and other information resources in the library using the card catalogue and OPAC as an effective searching tool.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128047630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two research questions guided the study. The research questions were to identify the emerging technologies in use for improved service delivery among public university information professionals in Rivers State and to find out the extent to which information professionals utilized emerging technologies for improved service delivery in public university libraries in Rivers State. The population consists of 50 information professionals in the three universities; University of Port Harcourt (20), Rivers State University (19) and Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (11) respectively. A sample size of 50 information professionals in the universities representing 100% of the population served as respondents. An accidental sampling technique was used for the study. All the information professionals that make up the population were used. A 12-item questionnaire was used for data collection. Cronbach alpha statistics was used to obtain the 0.77 reliability coefficient of the instrument. Mean scores and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while the z-test statistics were used to test the hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance. The result amongst others revealed that social network websites technologies and video-based communication platforms like the Zoom and WebEx are in use in both Federal and State library but digital reference robots, library automation SOUL software and Protocols VoIP (Voice over Internet) was not in use in both Federal and State university libraries. It was recommended that university management should give the required attention to library use, provide and encourage the application of digital reference robots, library automation SOUL software and Voice over Internet Protocols (VoIP) and other current gadgets to be used to meet the demand of library users, most especially at this period of post covid-19 pandemic.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"268 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123112377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the foremost steps in dealing with these adverse effects is timely access to adequate and reliable information on the pandemic. There is overwhelming evidence that ties information-seeking behaviour with access to relevant and timely information. Yet, there are sketchy studies on the information-seeking behaviour and access to relevant information on the COVID-19 pandemic. The situation is much more alarming when older persons, who are more susceptible to the virus are brought into perspective, especially those in developing countries. Undeniably, there is a significant gap between the health support systems in developing countries and that of developed countries. This creates a corresponding discrepancy between health information-seeking behaviour among these countries. This study examined the effect of the information-seeking behaviour of older persons on the confidence of surviving the pandemic in a developing country. The study adopted a quantitative approach. The purposive sampling technique was used to sample 100 respondents for the study. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s Correlation and multiple regression were used to analyze the data. The findings of the study revealed that there is a significant relationship between older persons’ need for information and confidence in surviving the pandemic. The findings of the study also found that there is a significant relationship between an older person’s source of information and confidence in surviving the pandemic. In addition, the findings of the study showed that there is a significant relationship between older person’s information validation and confidence in surviving the pandemic. The study therefore recommended that there is a need for government and other related agencies to ensure that older people are equipped with the necessary information on the COVID-19 pandemic.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124792082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To effectively drive the study two theories were adopted. The theory of social-cultural learning for the independent variable (information identification skills), and the theory of self-efficacy for the dependent variable (research output of academic librarians). More so, a conceptual review of literature on information identification skills and research output was carried out and a specific empirical review of the literature with extrinsic similarity and dissimilarity to the study was also done. The study adopted the correlational research design as the research design while the study area was the South-South Geopolitical Zone of Nigeria. The population of the study comprised 252 academic librarians from 14 libraries and faculties. The census technique was used to select the research participants 252. The researcher-developed questionnaire entitled: “Information Identification Skills and the Research Output of Academic Librarians Questionnaire (IISROALQ)” was used to collect data while the reliability test results using the Cronbach Alpha formula in SPSS showed an average coefficient of .83 which signified that the instrument was reliable for the study. Data was collected from the various universities by the researchers and their trained assistants by following the requisite ethical procedures. The data collected was analysed using frequencies and percentages for the research question, while the test of hypothesis at ≤ 0.05 level of significance was carried out with the Chi-Square Test of Independence. The result showed that information identification skills have a positive significant relationship with the research output of academic librarians with p-value = 0.00, and Phi coefficient of 2.49 indicating a very large extent of a positive relationship. In conclusion, it was recommended that the National University commission should make proficient utilization of information literacy skills by academic librarians as part of the requirement to assess their suitability for performance within the scholarly communities. Also, the university management should give attention to constant information literacy skills programs to enhance the literacy skills of the academic staff to be able to produce quality and rich research output.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115210567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results showed that the libraries have strengths in having a collection development policy, users’ involvement in collection development, balanced, relevant and high-quality collections and up-to-date online databases. Lack of weeding policy and non - participation in the consortium are weaknesses in three libraries, opportunities include the use of other library resources, technology, open access resources, and acquisition through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (Tetfund) in the government-owned institutions while the high cost of online subscriptions, other information services providers, inadequate funding of collection development in four libraries, reliance on Tetfund, gifts and exchange by public universities constitute threats. Findings further revealed no significant difference between collection development of public and private university libraries (t(74) = 0.20, p> 0.05). The study recommends the development of a weeding policy that must be adhered to as well as collaboration amongst libraries.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125472509","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study is to evaluate digital literacy skills possessed by paraprofessionals in the execution of their job in academic library in South-West Nigeria. The design of the study was a descriptive survey. Data were collected using a Likert- Scale questionnaire distributed among target population consisting of paraprofessionals and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Result revealed proficiency in digital technology and use of digital devices by majority of the respondents for personal and official activities. However, the respondents were not too familiar with the use of technological tools and devices relevant to their work. The study recommended that paraprofessionals be exposed to continuous training to cope with the demands of the digital age. Library managers should have good training and development policies for staff to promote and boost quality library services and job performance.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128324612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study population comprises all the library staff in five selected University libraries. Total enumeration sampling techniques were used to select a sample of 105 respondents and were collected using a questionnaire. One research question and hypothesis are used with descriptive and inferential statistical tests applied to extract inferences from data. Results revealed that the most challenging task for the managers of a library and information center was to identify the factors which can motivate the library staff. Managers have to understand the behaviour of staff at work as work behaviour is a clear indicator of what their work needs. The results further revealed that library managers made efforts to be satisfied with the various work behaviours of the workers in an organization. It also showed how those behaviours are related to the needs of users they try to satisfy with different motivation strategies in different situations. The study concludes that library staff is proficient in work motivation with a high level of motivation. It also found a significant relationship between motivation and work productivity of library staff. The findings are recommended to library managers and organizations interested in applying motivation strategies and improving workers’ job productivity.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116838209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Yamane formula for calculating sample size was used to determine 312 postgraduate students who represented the sample size of the study. A simple random sampling technique was used to administer the structured questionnaire, while the SPSS was also used to analyze the data. The majority (92.3%) of the postgraduates in FUNAAB have high computer literacy skills with skills in internet usage, word processing applications (81.6%) and spreadsheet applications (75.5%). They use e-prints, e-journals (76.9%), AGORA and HINARI (67.0%) often, but EBSCOHOST had low usage (34.6%). However, inadequate space, insufficient computer systems and inadequate ICT training programmes were institutional factors identified as challenges to using ERs by the respondents. The study established that computer literacy skills do not affect the use of ERs by postgraduates in FUNAAB. It was recommended that library management should work towards the expansion of the e-library unit as this will provide enough space to accommodate a large number of students using the library and improve the use of ERs by postgraduates.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124108768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, four (4) study objectives were developed to address the amount of awareness, level of use, purpose, and challenges connected with students’ use of OERs. The study adopted a descriptive survey design for a target population of 8,501 undergraduates across three faculties (Arts, Education and Physical Sciences) in the university enrolled for the 2018/2019 academic session. The study employed Yamane (1967) sample size determination and stratified random sampling technique to arrive at a sample size of 250 undergraduates which was allocated proportionally across the three faculties. A structured questionnaire was used to elicit responses which were analysed using descriptive statistics of frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean and standard deviation. The result of the analysis revealed a low level of OERs awareness among the undergraduates. Also, the study showed a low level of use of OERs among the undergraduates. Majority of those who used OERs affirmed their purpose for use to be acquiring free and quality information resources and increase their knowledge in their area of study. Findings from the analysis also revealed that lack of awareness and lack of knowledge on how to use OERs were major challenges confronting the use of OERs among the undergraduates. The study conclusively noted that embracing the full potential of OERs pushes universities to critically reconsider their policies and strategies especially in the areas of awareness and use by undergraduates who are the key beneficiary of the open access initiative","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122119907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
