The apparent gap in leadership succession may be a consequence of a lack of management’s desire to grow their leaders as well as a dearth of self-motivation on the part of the staff. As part of the solutions to filling seeming gaps in leadership continuity, organizations grow their leaders internally through mentoring, coaching and training, experience and management support for staff professional/career development. Succession planning identifies prospective staff with the desire to take up future leadership roles. There are arguments for and against succession planning in academic libraries as a means of selecting and appointing university Librarians. The current study explores succession planning strategies as means of choosing prospective leaders in academic libraries in Ghana. The study adopted a case study research approach. University Librarians of ten (10) public university libraries were purposely selected for the study. A structured interview was employed to collect the data that form the basis of the analysis. The study revealed that succession planning is lacking in academic libraries in Ghana. Appointment to the University Librarian role is based on general university selection criteria for all academic staff of the university, including academic library staff. Though some respondents agree that succession planning is a good strategy to grow staff internally to take over future leadership roles, others assert that staff progression in academic libraries must be based on scholarly publication and long service, as prescribed by the University appointment and promotion policy. The study concludes that leadership continuity in academic libraries in Ghana is not necessarily dependent on any wellthought-out succession plan implementation. As a result of the staff’s inability to meet university promotion and appointment requirements for academic staff, many university libraries lack that critical mass of potential candidates for the role of university librarian.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125816460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Academic libraries are faced with different ethical challenges including information dissemination, lack of financial resources, human capacity etc. The study explored the ethical challenges in the use of information in the selected public and private libraries in Ghana using the PAPA’s model as a guide. The study adopted the survey method and quantitative approach. The study setting was in four universities namely: KNUST (public), UG (public), Central University (private) and Garden City (private). Ninety-three (93) library staff were the total population surveyed. The sampling technique employed was purposive sampling, whiles questionnaires were the instrument in use in collecting data. All data collected in person and online were coded and analyzed using SPSS version 26. After analysis, the results were presented in tables and charts. The study revealed that scholarly materials are the nature of information materials in the library, while academic books are the type of information materials in the library. The study discovered that educational books are purchased from publishers while information materials are published through the university’s repository and online system. The study also demonstrated that patented materials are the only materials that can be subjected to copyright laws. Recommendations identified include: adhering to professional codes of ethics, developing and implementing policies and procedures, encouraging originality and creativity, providing education and training on accessibility, and reviewing and updating collections and resources. The librarians who took part in the survey were chosen using a random sampling method. One out of every three librarians being admitted on the day was given the questionnaire. The researcher used Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS version 20.0) application software with simple percentages chosen for easier analysis and interpretation. The findings of this study revealed that certified librarians are averagely aware of the existence of robotic technologies usage for library services and the anxiety of employee retrenchment is the major anxiety, despite they are aware that, the innovative apparatuses will increase global recognition and enhance library services. It shows that certified librarians are faced challenges towards the use of robotic technologies such as potential job loss, inadequate funding and epileptic among others. The study recommended that certified librarians should keep up with modern trends in information dissemination by learning fundamental skills that are technologically compatible among others.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"467 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115322489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To meet these challenges, university libraries in developed countries have adopted different strategies such as using a written collection development policy (CDP) to guide their collection development activities. However, university libraries in Africa are lagging in this regard. It is either they have not formulated the policy or used it to guide their collection development activities. Therefore, this study argues that a written CDP, if well prepared and used, can address collection development challenges facing university libraries in Africa and provide standard collections necessary for teaching and research activities of the university communities. Specifically, the paper discusses major collection development challenges facing university libraries in Africa and establishes ways in which a written CDP could be used to overcome them. The study was guided by four research questions. The descriptive survey design was used and the population consisted of fifty-four (54) library staff in Federal Polytechnic Library, Oko, Anambra State, and forty-nine (49) library staff in Federal Polytechnic Library, Nekede, Imo State, summing up to the total number of one hundred and three (103) library staff from both tertiary institutions of study.. All one hundred and three (103) copies of questionnaires distributed were returned. The researchers adopted the entire population because the number is small and manageable as a sample size. The rating scale was the instrument used for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using simple percentages and mean scores of 2.50 midpoint based on the research questions and arranged in tables. The study revealed that library staff from both tertiary institutions study were aware of different types of security measures available and that both management should avail adequate safety measures for library resources. The study also found that the need for security measures is important to safeguard library materials, also the causes and challenges were found that better attention should be given to security in library and information services to avoid destruction of library resources. The study concluded that library staff was aware of different types of security measures available in both conventional and electronic systems, that library management has to make a positive move towards improving the security system to avoid damages or losses of library resources, and it was recommended that management of the two institutions studied should provide security systems to protect library resources from crime, installation of CCTV, RFID, video recording surveillance and other electronic measures to monitor the library space for unwanted activity or theft. Among other recommendations to ensure better safety of libraries is much needed for the two selected academic libraries, in SouthEast Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128620746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
