The study was also to find out challenges encountered and offer recommendations. Data was collected from the eight public university libraries in Ghana using a questionnaire. Copies of the questionnaire were e-mailed to the libraries outside Accra whilst those in Accra were hand delivered. The study found that the numbers of newspapers acquired by the libraries vary but activities concerning their management were similar. The only method of preserving the collection was by binding. None of the libraries was digitizing their collection and it was only one library that adopted electronic means of indexing the newspaper information. All the activities undertaken by the libraries in managing their newspaper collections (except indexing done by one library electronically) were done manually. It is hoped that the findings will inform and encourage the libraries to pool together their efforts and resources to adopt modern methods of preservation (for example digitizing) and managing the newspaper information for easy accessibility.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116864423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As service organizations, Libraries have long been crowned as knowledge institutions where individuals, organizations, and societies are provided unhindered access to knowledge. The paper indicates that libraries have the infrastructure (within its environmental context) to acquire, process and make information (books/journals) available. This infrastructure includes relationships with other institutions that assist in the information acquisition process and provision of knowledge in education, business and other sectors of the society. However, in performing these roles, the library faces some challenges. The paper further goes on to suggest ways by which libraries can continue to drive access or indeed improve access to knowledge by repositioning themselves to take advantage of emerging technologies, networking, as well as mobilizing their skills and expertise to continue to sustain the confidence of their users. The paper states that library associations represent librarians and libraries that provide valuable services to them and their communities. The different types of library associations are discussed. The author provides a historical antecedent to the establishment of the Ghana Library Association in 1962 and looks at the mission, vision and aims. The author then critiques the activities of the Association and identifies factors that should be put in place to build a strong library association. The paper concludes that membership of such a strong library association stands to derive a host of benefits.
