Sixty-two copies of a questionnaire were sent to the entire faculty and 31 were returned which gave a response rate of 50%. The responses showed very low level of faculty awareness of the electronic resources. It was also found out that inadequate training in the use of the electronic resources was a major factor in the non-use of the electronic resources by the faculty. The paper then professes suggestions such as aggressive marketing of the resources and the need to train users to acquire skills to enhance their optimal utilization of the resources.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"150 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123281445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A table of random numbers was used to select a sample size of 125 out of 208 personnel in the libraries. A sampling fraction of 60% was adopted to avoid bias and for a gain in precision of estimates among others. Of the 125 copies of the questionnaire administered on the personnel, 94 were retrieved and found usable, giving a response rate of 75.2%. Data was analysed using descriptive, Chi-square (X2) and t-test statistics. Findings revealed that, participative (democratic) and participative (authoritative) were the management styles predominantly practised by the libraries. There was a significant relationship between the styles practised but no significant difference between the application of practised styles in both libraries. It was established that though the National Universities Commission recommends participative management, no one management style can be applied in isolation; a combination of two or more of them work best. To this extent, recommendations were made on the basis of the findings.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129273590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditional libraries are therefore undergoing fundamental changes to cope with this new trend. It is in this vein that digital libraries come into play. Digital libraries offer such benefits as: equitable access; reduced barriers of distance; timeliness; shared resources; and enhanced content delivery. Even though digital information services appear easy to provide, it poses its own challenges which include cost, preservation, digital collection development, copyright, etc. The challenges, therefore for taking positive steps to promote modern information management in the new millennium is not only for African libraries but for the world at large. This paper provides a highlevel overview of digital libraries, potential benefits of digital libraries to society, the challenges encountered in creating an effective digital library and what information professionals could do in meeting these challenges.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116135123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Content analysis was the methodology used to analyze information resources. Mostly peer-reviewed articles published between the years 2000-2006 that discuss the Open Access (OA) Movement and its effects on the quality of scholarly communication were used. The peer-review process was critically analyzed for the importance it plays in scholarly literature. The findings indicate that the present business model of the OA Initiative gives cause to doubt the quality of research articles published in the medium (OA). As much as advocates of the OA Movement do not approve of this opinion, they acknowledge this as a major challenge facing the movement.","PeriodicalId":399599,"journal":{"name":"Ghana Library Journal","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126256286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
