However, digital librarians and digital age library users need to develop metaliteracy skills to effectively navigate and evaluate digital information in the metaverse. The main purpose of this paper is to explore the link between libraries and the metaverse, define metaliteracy and highlight its importance for librarians and library users. The challenges of developing metaliteracy skills in the metaverse are discussed, as well as the need for ongoing training and support. With AI in libraries, users can explore the world of knowledge like never before with smart recommendations tailored to their needs. Overall, AI can enhance the library experience of both the users and library professionals with innovation and smart decisions. Hence, there is no doubt that AI and libraries have a close relationship; nonetheless, the usage and understanding of AI in library services continue to raise concerns, especially in the developing countries which this paper addresses. The purpose of this research paper is to review the current prospects and challenges of implementing AI in library services in developing countries. The primary objective of the study is to discern the pivotal predicaments and obstacles these nations face while implementing AI-based solutions and to propose pragmatic solutions.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000The present study adopts a qualitative approach, using content analysis techniques to glean meaningful insights. An extensive review of the extant literature on the subject was conducted, which was meticulously analysed to furnish the findings of this study. The review is limited to English language sources, and searches were conducted using various online academic databases.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000The review reveals that the prospects of implementing AI in library services in developing countries are significant, with potential benefits including improved access to information, increased efficiency and productivity and enhanced user experience. However, the review also identifies several challenges, including the lack of infrastructure and resources, the shortage of skilled personnel, the absence of data privacy regulations, digital divide and the high cost of implementing AI-based solutions.\u0000\u0000\u0000Practical implications\u0000The review suggests several practical solutions to overcome the challenges faced by developing countries in implementing AI in library services. These include partnerships between libraries and technology firms, investment in infrastructure and resources, training and capacity building for library staff and the development of regulatory frameworks to protect user data.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000This research paper provides a comprehensive review of the prospects and challenges of implementing AI in library services in developing countries. This study also aims to assess current proficiency levels, identify challenges and gaps, explore recommendations for improving skills and examine how researchers stay updated on AI advancements.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000A structured questionnaire was used to collect data, then analysed using appropriate statistical methods.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000Most respondents showed proficiency in various aspects of AI literacy for LIS research. However, some aspects, such as understanding AI concepts, ethical considerations and programming skills, had lower proficiency levels. Factors influencing AI literacy included limited resources for enhancement, lack of awareness and insufficient AI-related courses in LIS education.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000This study presents an original assessment of AI literacy proficiency among LIS researchers in ASEAN countries, shedding light on the current state of AI knowledge in the region’s library and information science field. However, there are some drawbacks of OpenVPN, such as network infrastructure dependency, require stabile internet connection, configuration complexity, to arrange and configurate OpenVPN needs skills and knowledge on the related field, data protection and security breach.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000The originality of this study is the use of OpenVPN to access Osiris that is managed by library. There are some variables to determine the benefits and drawbacks of the OpenVPN such as managing access, data security and efficiency. This study aims to explore the use of OD for reference services delivery in academic libraries. It is believed that the concept of OD in librarianship refers to the practice of making publicly available data freely accessible, usable and shareable by anyone.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000This research examined how the utilization of OD may affect library services and operations. This paper used the systematic review of literature to answer the research questions; hence, it was a desk study.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000Given that there has been recently a research shift in linking OD to library metadata, this study revealed some interesting findings. More specifically, it discovered that incorporating OD into reference services can provide several benefits and enhance the quality and relevance of the information provided to library users. In addition, this paper reported that OD enriches reference services by providing comprehensive, current and interdisciplinary information, supporting evidence-based research, enabling data visualization and analysis, fostering community engagement and promoting innovation.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000This paper proposes that libraries that possess extensive collections are in a favorable position to embrace the shift toward becoming OD and open big data libraries. It is also believed that academic libraries, through reference services, meet the challenge of providing access to their institutional repositories by holding many sets of data in various formats and providing various interfaces, developing metadata systems for various data streams, supporting all ecosystems of software and data products for reformatting and reusing large and complex data, and support for data sets identifiers.
