Medical experimentation is part and parcel of the research work of medical staff and makes the development of medicine possible. Effective as of 1 January 2021, the amendment to the Act on the Medical and Dental Professions has introduced significant changes to the rules of medical experimentation. Some of these changes have raised controversy and generated problems of interpretation. This article aims to demonstrate the breadth of the changes that have been introduced, draw attention to the related doubts and update the knowledge of medical staff on the rationale for the legality of medical experimentation in Poland after 1 January 2021. Review methods . This review has been compiled based on data contained in the Polish Legal Information System “LEX”. It also uses the Online System of Legal Acts and the system of Legal Acts available online at https://isap.sejm.gov.pl/ Brief description of the state of knowledge. The amendment to the Act has caused a great deal of confusion in research, insurance and legal communities. Already at the stage of drafting the law, numerous concerns were raised about the proposed changes. Major concerns were voiced about the introduction of a new type of medical experiment into the law, the qualifications of a person in charge of a medical experiment, the compulsory insurance, as well as changes to the rules of medical experimentation with minor participants and the rules of medical experimentation without the required consent. Summary . The changes to the rules of medical experimentation introduced by the Act on the Medical and Dental Professions are still controversial, and research practice does not always go hand in hand with the solutions adopted. The regulations in force since 1 January 2021 do not meet the expectations of the research, insurance and legal communities and thus require further revisions.","PeriodicalId":387674,"journal":{"name":"Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129840165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the review was to characterise the effects of dietary supplements on the improvement of laboratory indicators in insulin resistance. The mechanism of action of such compounds as e.g. anthocyanins, curcumin, berberine, vitamin B12 is described. Review methods. A literature review on supplementation in insulin resistance was conducted, including full-text articles indexed in the PubMed database. An electronic literature search was conducted, restricted to specific years of publication (2007–2022), using search terms in the form of the following key words: ‘insulin resistance’, ‘diabetes’, ‘berberine’, ‘anthocyanins’, ‘fatty acids’, ‘curcumin’, ‘vitamin B12’, and ‘Policaptil Gel Retard’. All retrieved articles were analysed and both original articles and randomised double-blind, placebo-controlled studies were included in the review. Brief description of the state of knowledge. Available data show that IR (Insulin Resistance) is affected by many different factors, such as genetics, age, or obesity. However, the most important aspect is life style. Therefore, treatment consists of changing the diet and increasing physical activity. Some studies report that a combination of such a procedure with carefully selected dietary supplements may prove highly beneficial. The compounds they contain, such as antioxidants, have a free radical scavenging effect and exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. Many valuable studies confirm an impressive role of certain plants in their hypolipidemic, hypoglycaemic and insulin-sensitising actions. Summary. Currently, there is an inceasing evidence confirming the effectiveness of using plant supplements in insulin resistance. Young adults demonstrate the highest prevalence of cigarette and e-cigarette use which justifies conducting research in attempt to identify correlates of the use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes. The aim of the study was to compare predictors related to smoking susceptibility among adolescents in four Eastern and Southern European countries. Materials and method. The latest data from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), obtained from Latvia (2019), Moldova (2019), Montenegro (2018), and San Marino (2018) were subject to analysis. The research tool was a standardized, anonymous survey questionnaire, consisting of basic questions regarding socio-demographic characteristics, prevalence of tobacco smoking, knowledge and attitudes of young people about and to smoking, access to cigarettes, the role of advertising and the media in tobacco smoking. Results. Nearly one-third of young adults were prone to smoking in San Marino and a one-fourth in Latvia. In all four analyzed countries, exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) in public places was a predictor of vulnerability to tobacco use (OR 1.4 – 1.79; p<0.01 in Montenegro; p<0.001 in Moldova). In three analyzed countries, the correlates were: exposure to SHS at home (OR 1.31; p<0.05 in Latvia; 1.51; p<0.01 in Moldova; 1.91; p<0.01 in San Marino), the feeling of comfort (OR 1.59; p< 0.001 in Latvia; 1.45; p< 0.01 in Moldova; 1.41; p< 0.01 in Montenegro), and the opinion that a smoker can easily quit smoking (OR 1.39; p< 0.05 in Latvia; 1.84; p< 0.001 in Moldova; 1.4; p<0.05 in Montenegro). Conclusions. Political factors (observance of smoking bans in public places and homes) were strongly correlated with tobacco use susceptibility. These results should induce governments to intensify interventions to encourage tobacco-free homes, and control smoking bans in public places.","PeriodicalId":387674,"journal":{"name":"Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128658569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
