In liberalized power systems, the objectives of using this flexibility vary for different actors in the system. In this paper we formulate the optimization problem of EV charging from the perspective of three different actors: 1) consumers (represented by an aggregator), 2) distribution network operators and 3) wind power producers. The respective objectives of these actors can be summarized as minimizing charge costs, minimizing network losses and maximizing profits on a day-ahead market. The results show that the three different perspectives lead to markedly different EV demand profiles. These differences are partly caused by the fact that, due to its stochastic nature, wind power generation weakens the correlation between electricity prices, network load and imbalance volumes.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134338276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Models for consumption, generation and exchange are combined using a market equilibrium approach. Scenarios for the most influential stochastic factors are created using statistical models. Forecasted price scenarios yield an indication on the expected future system price, and the uncertainty in future prices. Compared to stochastic dynamic programming based models, we use an empirical function to approximate the water value, with a possible benefit in terms of computational effort. In addition to providing a picture of the price distribution, the model can be applied to learn about the impact of fundamental variables. In particular, we study the relative influence of each of the stochastic factors. The performance of the model is evaluated in numerical examples over a two-year forecast period. Overall, we conclude the model provides realistic forecasts of the system price and its distribution. The performance under normal market conditions may deviate from our results, due to the extraordinary drop in fuel prices caused by the financial crisis.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134492049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These models present a wide variety of techniques, most of them using novel artificial intelligence approaches. Load forecasting is a complex matter and it is the result of several processes that, depending on the database, may be of more or less importance. However, most models focus their attention only on one process like the “forecasting engine”, neglecting other processes like variable selection or pre-processing. This paper proposes a standard scheme for load forecasting models that includes all sub-processes within load forecasting. The analysis of load forecasting models through this scheme allows identifying the effect of each process on the overall performance of the model. Also, proposing load forecasting models following this scheme will enhance benchmarking possibilities and hybridization of models. Finally, this paper presents such analysis of an actual load forecasting model.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114787778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The report, which is the first stage of a broad research project on the TCG, identifies and examines the main issues from a qualitative view point and sets the stage for further quantitative analysis. The paper evaluates the competitive advantage of a TCG to meet established planning and operation norms such as cost and reliability as well as more topical criteria related to emissions control as a result of concerns over climate change. The proposed TCG would interconnect the provincial grids more tightly through one or a combination of possible topologies elaborated upon in the paper. The possible advantages of such a project are discussed in detail as are the expected barriers.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114540254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Facilitating the latter, in particular, through greater network interconnection capacities, and the harmonization of trading at various local hubs is going to be actively pursued in many parts of Europe with the aim of improving both market efficiency and system reliability. This paper seeks to advance our understanding of the efficiency of European gas spot prices by looking at several regional markets. We pursue this through an analysis of spot prices collected on the following markets: NBP, TTF, Zeebrugge, PSV and Baumgarten. Hence, this paper is going to investigate empirical properties of European Natural gas spot prices, which drives electricity prices across Europe. Furthermore here we propose to understand the state of integration of these markets toward a single European area as suggested by the European Commission and followed by ENTSO-G. Therefore applying Granger's causality tests and Vector Error Correction Models, we test the hypothesis of both short and long run integration process and try to understand which is the nature of interactions among such prices across the European area.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117324054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As investing in new cross-border transmission capacity is a long term process with a lot of challenges, optimal use of the existing capacity is the best short term measure. In Europe, Flow-based Market Coupling (FMC) is the state of the art methodology in this regard and is near its implementation in the Central and Western Europe (CWE) region. The CWE transmission system is equipped with power flow controlling devices (PFCs), such as Phase Shifting Transformers (PST), to mitigate loop flows. Such devices can change the flow pattern throughout the system and therefore affect the FMC output. This paper analyzes the potential influence of PSTs in the results of FMC. The FMC algorithm is modified adding PST setting as a variable and illustrated for a 3-zone example. The main objective of the proposed algorithm is to include the PST settings in the search for optimal cross-border transmission capacity allocation.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121636297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent amendments to the Emissions Trading Directive will start applying after 2013, such as a reinforced EU-wide emission cap and the end of free allowances for the power sector. Even under stricter rules, there is some uncertainty about the effectiveness of the EU ETS to reduce emissions from power generation in the near future with the available technologies. This paper studies the impact of different CO2 price scenarios on the operation of the European power system in 2015 for a given generation portfolio. A mid-term planning model assuming perfect competition and market splitting between countries is used. Results show how CO2 price impacts are limited to bring on emission reductions due to the existing technologies and cross-border transmission capacities.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"121 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126145020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the aim of this work is the definition and economic analysis of business models in the timeframe of 2020 and beyond. The business models are divided into a controlled charging strategy as Grid to Vehicle (G2V), which describes the participation of EVs in the Austrian control energy market, Vehicle to Grid (V2G) as well as a second life of lithium-ion batteries. Overall results indicate low positive contribution margins (from -7.32 to 63.94 €/vehicle/month) for V2G and G2V applications, even if costs for needed equipment as well as dispatch probability for providing of control energy are neglected. Thus, an economic realization of these concepts cannot be recommended at currently existing Austrian market conditions. The reuse of batteries after their automotive lifetime on the contrary can be recommended for a simultaneous participation on the energy exchange and control energy markets. Compared to a reference technology the minimum remaining lifetime of those reused Li-ion batteries must be more than four years.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125081789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The competitiveness of PV is referred to as \"PV Parity\", i.e. the \"Levelized Cost of Electricity\" (LCOE) of PV is compared according to market participants and market segment of the energy system with the traditional cost factors. Through a dynamic economic analysis of the PV system over its lifetime compared to a conventional energy system, the \"PV Parity\" is reached when the PVaddition of PV to the electricity supply decreases the overall price of the electricity consumed. By sensitivity analysis of the influence parameters of the LCOE of PV and developing of scenarios of future price a window of time or framework conditions for different European countries for achieving the \"PV Parity\" for different market participants can be determined.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128536141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
