However, the mode of payment also has an impact on the spending patterns of an individual. It is clear that the introduction of digital payments has affected spending patterns and subsequently savings habits. People generally aren’t getting better at saving through technology they are getting better at spending. The case examines and highlights the behavior of individuals who use cash and cashless digital payments in conjunction with their respective spending and saving patterns.","PeriodicalId":37921,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Information Technology Teaching Cases","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75710194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At a time when generative AI, such as ChatGPT, has gained popularity, the case offers insights into the challenges and risks of algorithmic decision making and algorithmic fairness, such as accuracy and explainability. The case allows students to explore the role of ethics when developing an AI-based tool in an area that they all know very well: Most students will have had to sit high-stakes assessments in the past and are still likely to be assessed on an ongoing basis as a current student. Students will thus be able to relate to the case and have their own stake(s) and opinion(s) about whether they would want to be assessed by AI. The case is also more broadly applicable in raising general awareness of the challenges and potential risks involved when using AI for decision making and it encourages students to consider the wider consequences for all stakeholders that are triggered by the use of digital technology.","PeriodicalId":37921,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Information Technology Teaching Cases","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76219024","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To make diagnostic tools, repair manuals, and replacement parts available to the public, the movement continues to push for laws requiring manufacturers to do so. The movement, supported by legislation, is gaining traction as a fundamental human right. On the other hand, the right-to-repair movement received different responses from smartphone manufacturers, including Apple, Samsung, Google, and Nokia. This article describes the evolving market conditions and examines how various brands have reacted to the recent global tide. The article contributes to the efforts toward United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on several accounts since right-to-repair laws help reduce electronic waste and promote sustainable consumption.","PeriodicalId":37921,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Information Technology Teaching Cases","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83800977","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Implementing big data analytics has many benefits, such as improving decision-making processes, enhancing accounting processes and compliance, boosting marketing campaigns, and providing better credit risk assessment procedures. This case study aims for the student to understand the challenges of big data analytics implementation in a Malaysian commercial bank. Students take on the role of a Senior IT Manager who needs to consider solutions to the implementation problems. Although the team proposed using cloud-based services as a solution to these issues, the CEO expressed concerns about security risks and requested other alternative solutions. The team has also been requested to come up with solutions to the data quality issues experienced by the case study bank.","PeriodicalId":37921,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Information Technology Teaching Cases","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76799487","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SigmaTel, part of a large and diversified corporate conglomerate, is the largest telecom operator in India. It entered a highly competitive market and quickly rose to the top spot on the back of cheap data and call rates and a strong 4G network. The case is set in 2021 when the company implements Distributor Management System (DMS)—a technology solution to streamline distributor operations. The primary decision point that the case protagonist, Sanjay Prakash, Head of Sales at SigmaTel, Delhi, faces is how to proceed in light of unexpected challenges that the initiative is facing. Should he recommend that SigmaTel proceed with the rollout? If yes, then how does he overcome distributor resistance and conflict? Failure to adopt DMS can impact the strategic business goals of SigmaTel.","PeriodicalId":37921,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Information Technology Teaching Cases","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80941746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We explore the strategic options available to the start-up and its founder’s rationale for developing an online marketplace business model focused on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise customers in small towns of India. The case further explores how India’s fintech ecosystem enabled frugal innovation by start-ups such as Finance Kaart. In a supportive ecosystem, Finance Kaart followed a partnership-driven approach but needed to address investor concerns regarding its “over-dependence on the partners” that arguably limited its profit potential. We conclude by discussing how Finance Kaart planned to overcome the challenges to its growth strategy by transforming it into a Neo-bank.","PeriodicalId":37921,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Information Technology Teaching Cases","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75064993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditional commerce has been transformed by the internet, benefiting both businesses and buyers. A rise in the number of people using the internet and their smartphones has been a major driver for expansion in the e-commerce sector. To accurately gauge the future of online grocery shopping, it is important to have a firm grasp on the factors that have contributed to its rise in popularity. This case study attempts to investigate and asses consumers adoption of e-grocery platforms by using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology model (UTAUT) and is distinctive in that it incorporates a situational factor-COVID and a customer centricity component into the UTAUT 2 model in order to determine the drivers of users’ behavioral intention toward e-grocery purchase in India.","PeriodicalId":37921,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Information Technology Teaching Cases","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88080677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such algorithmic decision-making systems are increasingly leveraged to improve the efficiency of public administration. However, Centrelink’s scheme went horribly wrong: the system, branded as “Robodebt” by the popular media, generated debt notices that were inaccurate and based on insufficient evidence. Numerous vulnerable citizens who received the debt notices suffered a great deal of distress. While public controversy ensued, the ruling government continued to defend the flawed system until a court decision ruled it unlawful in 2019. This teaching case challenges one to analyze what went wrong in the implementation and management of the Robodebt system through the lens of sociotechnical systems.","PeriodicalId":37921,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Information Technology Teaching Cases","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84082584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
