Vasant Narasimhan was appointed in 2018 as the new CEO of Novartis—a global pharma company. He champions a multi-faceted strategic intent: 1) transform the company from “selling pills” to investing heavily in discovering of new treatments that combine life sciences and digital technologies. In Spain, José Marcilla, the Director General of Novartis Oncology, pioneered an organizational transformation by developing (1) a cell-based innovation organization and process and (2) a new startup accelerator. This case explores both initiatives and their far-reaching consequences. The “Spanish experiment” helped to develop of digital services that reach the patient in a highly regulated environment. This duo of cases—Novartis Oncology Spain: Agile Innovation and The RWE (real wold evidence) Cell—gives students the opportunity to examine the motivations behind the transformation at Novartis, explore the implementation of its strategic intent, and ask what is the appropriate pace for such a dramatic change. The case is taught as a single class for decision-making regarding which cells and startups are suitable to be continued given the innovation horizons. The case explores the environmental benefits of QR code menus in the restaurant industry by drawing on existing literature and examining how QR code menus can reduce paper waste, lower carbon footprint, and promote sustainable practices. The case also discusses how QR code menus contribute to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The case concludes that QR code menus offer various benefits for restaurants and customers, such as reducing waste, enhancing customer experience, supporting local and organic food producers, and promoting responsible consumption and production. It is built on top of IMPS, an existing mode used for instant money transfers. UPI is governed by the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI), which monitors and promotes the UPI payment system. This case study on the payment platform will give detailed information about UPI, its initiatives like UPI123 and “UPI Chalega” and its progress. The emergence of FinTech has revolutionized the delivery of financial services and created new opportunities for innovation in the financial sector. The use of artificial intelligence, blockchain, and mobile banking are examples of how technology is reshaping the financial industry. This case explores the emergence of the Indian banking sector’s adoption of technology, starting with computerization in the late 1980’s and its growth through to the present day. Financial services have benefited from technology in the form of streamlined processes, lower costs, happier customers, and easier access to relevant data. In addition, by using technology, risk can be evaluated, superior investments can be made, and customer habits may be comprehended. Conversely, technology presents a set of difficulties such as cybersecurity risks, financial misconduct, prejudiced algorithms, and the marginalization of specific demographics from digital financial amenities. It is 2014 and she has just been appointed in her role and was burdened with a considerable set of challenges. Standard Bank Group’s IT costs were far above industry benchmarks, delivery was slow, staff was unhappy and there were a couple of large signature projects that were over time and budget by orders of magnitudes. Her predecessor has embarked on a large whole scale outsourcing journey and a decision needs to be made if that will continue. Dawie Olivier, her Head of Build, advocates something different: Agile and DevOps. The dream in this approach is to have many small cross-functional two-pizza teams that work together in close proximity and build software. The code created on a developer’s laptop will then seamlessly deploy to production automatically without the interference of pesky change control boards or some manual intervention. Should she continue with outsourcing or insource and focus on Agile? What she didn’t realise was that her successors will all face a similar situation and that answers will not be ready at hand. Many organisations face a similar dilemma of balancing outsourcing, Agile, DevOps and general constraints around skilled resources.
