“A LOST TREASURE”: ON FOLK ORIGINS OF THE VERSES OF CHU (CHUCI) “失落的宝藏”——论楚辞的民间渊源

C.) and is associated with the emergence of the Chinese poetry. Although today the thesis about the folklore origins of chuci, or rather of the poetic pieces presented by the Chuci (Verses/Elegies of Chu, Songs of the South) collection, is generally accepted, the author argues that, first, during the 1st–7th centuries A. D. the chuci poetry was stable considered within the Chinese book knowledge to be created by exclusively the literary genius of Qu Yuan (4th–3rd centuries B. C.), the great poet of the Chu Kingdom (11th–3rd centuries B. C.). Secondly, the views on chuci as an autochthonous (“southern”) poetic tradition dating back to the local folk art emerged in the 12th–13th centuries and finally established itself in the Chinese literature studies of the first third of the 20th century, all these under the influence of the ideological processes, caused by synchronic historical and political events. Thirdly, although the existence of developed song-poetic folklore in Chu Kingdom seems quite permissible, it for some reason remained out of fixation by that day written sources, including transmitted texts and archaeological materials (epigraphic inscription and excavated manuscripts). Therefore, almost nothing is known as a matter of fact of the hypothetic Chu song folklore what makes it impossible to recognize its true influence on origins and further on evolution of the chuci tradition.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities. At the same time, precious scroll devoted to the story of Guanyin with a Fish Basket is still recited by local performers in the city of Changshu and its vicinity now. The analysis of the Precious Scroll of Guanyin with a Fish Basket in the context of recitation practice of “telling scriptures” in Changshu allows demonstrating the special features of functioning of a Chinese Buddhist narrative in the folk ritual practice. In this variant of a precious scroll, the story of Bodhisattva Guanyin converting the inhabitants of a fishermen village is combined with the veneration of local tutelary deities, placed on the “family altars”; thus representing the secularized form of Chinese Buddhist devotion.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities. Literature gradually becomes a discipline demanding new educational approaches and additional efforts as students tend to doubt its relation to the competences necessary for their professional success. The paper presents one of the methods elaborated by the author to make students more motivated and involved in learning Korean literature, i. e., an “introductory course” opening the main course and gives its outline. It aims at giving a clear understanding of what the students will achieve, familiarizing the students with basic specific features of Korean literature relevant for the most of the material to be studied (time saving factor). The introduction provides the “road map” of the course, makes the bridges between literature and the targeted professional level (a motivational tool). This method can be applied to other literatures as well.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities. The author analyzed the stories included in the collection “Call to Arms”, relating to the second period of the writer’s work, selected lettered words of stories, identified the main lexical categories, grammatical and stylistic functions of the selected vocabulary. The author concluded that the Lu Xun did not use lettered words in order to name objects in a Western way, he endowed them with special functions, invested special meaning in them.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities. THE NORMAL AND THE EXCEPTIONAL: A COMPARISON OF PU SONGLING’S AND MO YAN’S SURREAL WORLDS 正常与异常:蒲松龄与莫言的超现实世界比较

By comparison, Mo Yan’s supernatural stories partly fall within supernatural literature, because post-1949 China espoused a scientific worldview which banishes the supernatural. On a second level, however, both Pu Songling’s and Mo Yan’s surreal fictions are political satires of their times. Yet, even on this point they diverge. While Pu Songling articulates the social and political criticism of his present to surreal elements, Mo Yan casts the surreal as a stand-in for the exceptional situations of his recent past which are the object of his criticisms.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities. This approach made great impact towards the popular view of Asian and Eurasian history among Japanese readers. The author aims to identify, analyze and present main ideas of Shiba’s concept of history of nomadic civilization in Mongolia and Great Steppe. Sources for analysis of these ideas are two essays and travel notes by novelist, Mongolian Travel Notes (1974) and Steppe Notes (1992). The article shows ties between civilizational approach of A. Toynbee and concept by Shiba Ryotaro in relation to nomadic civilizations and demonstrates essential features of its development. Texts by Shiba Ryotaro present a new understanding of nature of Asia within the Japanese social and historical thought in the post-war period.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities. Gorky played an important role in Russian literature during this time, while in China, different writers also introduced socialist realism through various literary translations of Russian writers, among which Gorky’s works were the most translated. Gorky advocated for the combination of realism and romanticism. He described positive heroes in his works and valued humanity. These thoughts, however, were interpreted in diverse ways by various Chinese writers, which were split into two teams. One team was represented by Zhou Yang (周 扬) and Xiao San (萧三), who underlined the political function of literature; the other team was represented by Hu Feng (胡风) and Mao Dun (茅盾), who were instead in favor of the fusion of the idea of humanism with socialist realism. This article begins with an introduction of Gorky’s thought through various literary works translated in the 1930s, representing the spread of Gorky’s ideas throughout China. The author then focuses on the different interpretations of his thoughts presented by Zhou Yang, Xiao San together with Hu Feng, and Mao Dun. The purpose of this article is first to elaborate on the significance of Gorky’s thoughts for Chinese literature in the 1930s, then to analyze the different interpretations of his thoughts, which serves to explain the reasoning for different interpretations and the objectives of these Chinese writers who put forward different perceptions of Gorky’s word. Finally, this article will conclude by analyzing whose interpretation is closer to Gorky’s original thoughts.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities. Various illustrated woodblock and lithographic editions of the novel (published before 1911) are discussed in chronological order with focus on the special features and artistic level of their illustrations, whose content and technique are compared. Popular woodblock prints nianhua from Russian collections are examined in order to trace whether connections with book illustrations exist and what episodes of the novel became more popular and for what reason. The paper refers to materials stored in prominent libraries, museums and research centers of Russia, Europe, US and Asia.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities. Today her name is almost forgotten, but at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries she was well-known throughout Russia: her artistic and dramatic works were widely in demand, she gave lectures in the capital and abroad, worked as a journalist in the leading St. Petersburg newspapers. At the age of 62, she took part in the Russian-Japanese war as a nurse of the Red Cross and war correspondent (Peterburgskaia gazeta, Yuzhniy Krai). During her stay in the war and later in Japan, Lukhmanova wrote not only travel notes and articles for newspapers, but also short plays, stories based on real events (Shaman, Black stripe, Tree in the Palace of Chizakuin, Li-Tun-Chi), stylization of Chinese and Japanese fairy tales (The Only Language Clear for a Woman, Human Soul, Typhoon, Golden Fox). The writer raised a variety of topics: the place and role of women in the war, the organization of hospitals, unjustified victims of war and the problem of moral choice, as well as ethnographic sketches devoted to the traditions and mode of life of Manchuria and Japan. And if its early records resemble ethnographic sketches, filled with wariness towards the local population and a lack of understanding of Chinese customs, then later, in fairy tales and diary sketches, the sense of guilt before the Chinese people for the bloody slaughter taking place on their land becomes more clearly apparent. The works of the writer were undeservedly forgotten for more than a hundred years and are just beginning their return to literary memory.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities.
