THE REVIVAL OF THE PHILIPPINE NATIONAL THEATER — KOMEDYA 菲律宾国家剧院的复兴

The genre formation was a part of catholic missioners propaganda activities. In time, komedya became the most popular dramatic genre in colonial Philippines. The common features of komedya are: 1) the central theme of komedya is fight between Christians and Muslims, where Christians always win; 2) actions described in komedya never take place in the Philippines, but in an exotic country, for instance in Turkey or in Armenia; 3) Spanish missioners played an important role in the formation of the genre; 4) komedya is the national theater; 5) komedya is a secular genre as adventures dominate over the religious motives. In the middle of the 19th century komedya was criticized by the most progressive Filipinos for being extravagant, lacking logic and not touching upon current Philippine problems. By the beginning of the 20th century komedya was not staged anymore almost everywhere in the Philippines. Its place was taken by the other genres. A number of actions to bring komedya back to its former popularity have been undertaken from the 1970s with the great support of the cultural center of the Philippines and University of the Philippines. It is important to mention that the genre is being changed in order to correspond the needs of the modern Philippine society. For example, the Muslim conflict is not the main topic of the modern Philippine national play as it contradicts the national policy of the Philippines.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities. The writer who had combined the images of European and Oriental women in order to obtain the architype of new Japanese woman in his early works no longer wanted to do this. He began to portray a new-age woman — his new ideal, which writer observed in Hollywood movies. Tanizaki Jun’ichirō anticipated the appearance of Modan gāru on the Japanese stage, women who became objects of public attention because they followed Western fashion trends and lifestyle. Precisely this kind of woman occupied Tanizaki’s mind for the first half of the 1920s. The novel Blue Flower (Aoi hana, 青い花, 1921) was the first Tanizaki Jun’ichirō’s work, in which we meet the modan garu, a new type of Japanese woman of the first half of the XX c. In this novel, he presents the West as a source of femininity, and western attributes now as being able to change both the exterior and interior of a human. Blue Flower is the result of Tanizaki Jun’ichirō’s research of these new women in his quest for their physical perfection.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities. In this treatise on the collaborative poetry of “linked verse” (renga), the author addresses the category of the “Way” (michi) or the “Way of Poetry” (uta-no michi), which he interprets on the basis of ancient Chinese philosophers (Confucius and Lao Tze) and early Japanese authors of Zen school (e. g., Mujū Ichien, who wrote the Shasekishū — The Collection of Sand and Rocks, 13th century) and even endows it with a new meaning. In Shinkei’s view, the Way is not only mastery and its perfection. This is a sum total of many diverse things: the entire corpus of belles-lettres, theoretical treatises, schools, teachers and disciples, ideal poets, trends, styles, inner discipline, lifestyles, the past and the present.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities. In addition to compiling a complete chronological list of all Chinese books translated into Russian from the category of children’s reading, our tasks included identifying and characterizing the main periods, trends and patterns in the development of translation and book publishing of Chinese children’s literature in Russian, analyzing the dynamics of translations in different years, analyzing the activities of translators who contributed to the development of cultural ties between the two countries, listing the names of the best illustrators, whose work played an important role in popularizing Chinese literature for children, identifying the main problems in translation and publication of children’s Chinese books in Russia at different periods. After studying the general picture of translations of Chinese literature for children into Russian, as well as taking into account the nature of historical events and political relations between China and Russia, we propose to distinguish the following seven periods in translation: 1779–1917; 1918–1949; 1950–1959; 1960–1980; 1981–1991; 1992–2013; since 2014.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities. Utilizing the information contained in the text, this article reconstructs the content of the ancient Chinese rituals of the life cycle — initiation, marriage, funeral and mourning, all of which served to trace and formalize changes in a person’s social status, securing his transition to a new position. Structure, functions and symbolism of ancient Chinese transitional ceremonies generally correspond with the theory of rituals of passage developed by the French researcher A. van Gennep. The results of this work demonstrate that the treatise may in the future become the object of close attention of researchers from various scientific branches, analyzing the panhuman universals of spiritual development.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities. It was fiercely criticized by the Chinese critical circle at that time, and this criticism embodies the unique characteristics of “skewness and rightness”. At the same time, although there is a sharp contrast between the fierce criticism of Russian and Soviet literature during the “Cultural Revolution” period and the worship of it during the “seventeen years”, the criticism still reveals a similar literary concept with the “seventeen years” behind it, and also has some secret connection with the mainstream literature of the Soviet Union. This criticism of Russian Soviet literature during the “Cultural Revolution” was inevitably related to the cold reception of Russian Soviet literature in contemporary China.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities. It can be said that Wang Meng’s influence on Russia is the same as that of Russian literature on Wang Meng’s life, and the latter is an indispensable cause of the former. This paper takes the period from the founding of the People’s Republic of China to the late period of 1980s as the timeline, the influence of Soviet literature on Wang Meng’s writing during the Sino-Soviet period, and the variation of Wang Meng’s acceptance of Russian and Soviet literature in the new period. Combined with text analysis, the author explains the literary phenomenon of writer Wang Meng. First of all, the influence of Soviet literature on Wang Meng’s writing during the Sino-Soviet period was divided into two parts: one is the “invisible” imitation of Russian and Soviet literature by contemporary Chinese writers; the other is Wang Meng’s inheritance and influence of Soviet literature. Among them, the Slavic spirit in Wang Meng’s works and the “revolutionary” theme in Wang Meng’s novels are the innovations of this article. In the second, the author separately analyzes three aspects: Wang Meng’s practice of Bakhtin’s carnivalized poetics, the change from idealism to realism, and the Orthodox spirit, Lao Zhuang thought and Wang Meng’s literary worldview. According to the language expression, the author’s creative style and the writers’ literary thought analysis, author explored Wang Meng’s acceptance and transformation of Soviet literary theories, literary genres, and Russian national spirit after the 1980s, and revealed Wang Meng’s reform and innovation in the literary path. Furthermore, from this perspective, examine the reasons why Wang Meng’s novel creation can stand on its own, repeatedly innovate, and the literary charm is evergreen.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities. This volume contains illustrations of various types of Taiwanese “barbaric” natives that reveal a great deal about Qing imaginative conception of savagery. They are classified both by administrative divisions and by categories of civilized (熟番) and uncivilized (生番) depending on their adoption of Chinese culture. The entries begin with the civilized savages of Taiwan county, then south to Fengshan county, and then north to Zhuluo county, Zhanghua county, and finally Danshui sub prefecture. The submitted uncivilized savages follow again in sequence from south to north. Last are the uncivilized savages of the inner mountains. The illustrations thus proceed from the most civilized one through increasing degrees of savagery. In each of the thirteen pictures, the differences between the savage figures and civilized figures are emphasized. The depictions of the physical appearances of the civilized and uncivilized savages can demonstrate their relative levels of civilization. The Qing Dynasty’s ethnographical description, which recorded the social culture of the historical tribes, now became particularly valuable because of the lack of a great amount of information on the indigenous tribes of Taiwan. It is quite necessary to study the society, traditions and cultural features of Taiwanese indigenous people in different periods, especially after their integration into the Qing Empire. Huang Qing zhi gong tu is regarded as a very important source for a detailed investigation of different ethnical types of peoples who inhabited the island of Taiwan. We have to analyze the history of aboriginal culture alongside Chinese culture to gain a more rounded insight into the culture and history of Taiwan.","PeriodicalId":376664,"journal":{"name":"St. Petersburg University Studies in Social Sciences & Humanities.
