Unsystematic and inadequate handling of waste is one of the major problems of environmental policy in Serbia. This situation is primarily the consequence of the society’s inadequately developed attitude towards waste, and its failure to understand the positive effects of waste management. According to research, developing countries are, quite realistically, facing certain problems and challenges in this area. In the context of the subject of this paper, it is essential to point out that waste management belongs in the category of important environmental factors of tourism destination development. According to the Republic of Serbia visions of tourism to 2025, tourism is to become the leading promoter of the Republic of Serbia’s image in the world as a modern and desirable destination for visits, vacations and business alike, thus fulfilling the constant innovative function in the implementation of the modern standards, new technologies and protection of nature. Travel companies use AI for various administrative tasks as well as for customer support. Hotels and other travel companies have already used chatbots on social media platforms and instant messaging apps. In addition to customer support, AI may be used in tourism for quick and accurate collection, sorting and interpretation of data. The author in this paper will point out the positive impact of AI and digitalization in the tourism sector. Besides that, the author will explore the ways in which the new possibilities of digital technologies can make travel services more accessible, easier and more customized in the future. The transformation of the tourism industry has conditioned new tourism trends and influenced the development of nature-based tourism. The research of the tourism market shows changes in consumer behaviour and motives of tourism movements. The meeting with the destination value chain where they travel is extremely important for modern tourists. The destination as a ʻvalue chainʼ consists of related activities making it recognizable and more competitive in the tourism market. The value chain assessment is an indicator of tourists’ satisfaction degree with the provided and used service, i.e. the tourism destination ʻfinalʼ product. The application of information technologies has a key role in the tourists’ assessment of the value chain and the destination selection. Fear of infection and health concerns increased during the pandemic. The restrictive measures have limited international travel, which led to great expectations of an end to the pandemic for freer movement and safe travel. The great consequences of the COVID-19 for the tourism industry and tourism destinations will have its effects even after the end, and the post-pandemic tourism recovery strategies should be well planned and in focus along with strategies for the keeping tourism industry during the crisis. This paper aims to investigate the residents’ support for post-pandemic tourism in one of the most famous tourism destinations in Serbia, Vrnjačka Banja. When learning about culture, the origin of the destination is also very important, and the story of the destination is interesting if it has the history of a given culture. This paper generates short-term indicators of the development of the municipality of Vrnjačka Banja as a spa town in the Republic of Serbia with the largest market share. Apart from the fact that tourism is characterized by a highly global character and mass, it also creates knowledge about culture by connecting diferent parts of the world. The findings indicate that the existing tourist attractiveness does not exceed the potential possibilities, and in that sense it would be necessary to develop future tourist flows for the development and valorization of cultural heritage in Vrnjacka Banja. The result of entrepreneurial activities are innovations, which, in the conditions of unstable and changing environment, have a key role of changes’ stabilizer. The paper aims to assess the development and contribution of entrepreneurial activities and innovations to the business of companies, with special emphasis on their importance for the hotel industry. The methods of analysis and synthesis and the methods of induction and deduction are applied in the paper in order to summarize the presented previous theoretical and practical knowledge. The main goal of the paper is scientific-professional analysis and explanation of the problem of illegal occupation of land that is considered part of a protective forest, national park or other land with a special purpose, as well as construction without a building permit and its impact on tourism quality. The paper presents an analysis of the frequency of criminal offenses related to the observed phenomenon in the period from 2016 to 2020 in the territory of the Republic of Serbia. The introduction of covid passes a year ago, as another reaction to the suppression of the pandemic, has provoked a very large number of discussions that have remained without a clear epilogue so far. However, the introduction of covid passes has had the greatest impact on tourism and related activities (air and road transport, especially international) in every possible sense - restricting travel, and movement in general. This situation inevitably affected employment in the sector and introduced a number of difficulties, in addition to all those that already existed before the pandemic period. Many tourist destinations closed their borders due to the development of a global pandemic of COVID-19, which resulted in a dramatic reduction of tourist turnover as well as the temporary stop of normal functioning of the tourism industry. Moreover, the current health crisis influenced significantly the changes in decision-making process of tourists when choosing a holiday destination and the way of organizing their journey. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relations among travel risk perception, tourist behavior during travel and the frequency of travel among Serbian residents when the individual characteristics of the respondents are controlled. Results of the empirical research indicate that tourist’s behavior during travel is positively connected with the travel risk perception. Tourism is faced with challenges for future development, and they are increasingly imposed as a result of the drastic changes that have occurred due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, the purpose of the paper is to present the perspectives of tourism in the country with all its challenges, but having as a starting point the characteristics of recent tourism development. The research design is created to present findings related to the future tourism challenges in North Macedonia.
