Despite these cutbacks, organizations must continue to innovate and provide contributions to the set of stakeholders. This paper explores identified industry best practices for IT service and staffing models that can be utilized to ensure adequate resources are dedicated to achieving innovation. In addition, a review of the capacities and capabilities which fall under the new IT service and staffing models are developed in the form of an innovation matrix. This approach reduces IT requirements to focus on key strategic service areas, with considerations for reduced staffing needs during periods of economic downturn.","PeriodicalId":369450,"journal":{"name":"First International Technology Management Conference","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126468780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Historical trend of products such as wind turbine shows the cost-benefit increases with scaling. However in the recent decade the maximum size of turbines is experiencing a stalled growth beyond 130 meter diameter. This when left unnoticed will limit further scaling in commercial turbines and will result in reduced wind energy diffusion and cost of energy. Results from this study shows technology adoption and adaption has been a key step in achieving scaling and in the recent trend the delayed technology inception and adoption can be seen as a vital cause for the slow scaling trend. Literature review shows new materials are a positive source of support towards scaling; however their diffusion depends on the firm size and involves risk due to technical uncertainty. To overcome these limits to scaling, a structured technology search using a open-innovation based exploration-exploitation amenable modified stage-gate based approach is recommended at firm level along with appropriate supply-adoption-demand integrated policies at country level such that it promotes prior enabling technology creation and adoption to cater to product scaling needs.","PeriodicalId":369450,"journal":{"name":"First International Technology Management Conference","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127490326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given the integrative nature of logistics technology, failure to implement the technology successfully could result in writing off major investments in developing and implementing the technology or even in abandoning the strategic initiatives underpinned by these innovations. Consequently, the need to employ effective strategies and models to cope with these uncertainties is crucial. This research addresses the aspect of uncertainty in implementation success by process research models. Process research approach focuses on the sequence of events in the technology transfer process that occur over time. Through the use of optimal matching from natural science and cluster analysis, this research revealed four patterns that organizations follow when transferring logistics technology namely, formal minimalist, mutual adaptation, development concerned, and organizational roles dispenser. Analysis of the relationship between these patterns and success pointed to a set of crucial and necessary events which differ from one pattern to another.","PeriodicalId":369450,"journal":{"name":"First International Technology Management Conference","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121614997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector is the mechanism that creates value from such research and innovation. The purpose of this paper is to explore the structure of the SME sector in terms of its growth over the last ten years, their contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP), their employment capacity and the range of industrial activities they are involved in. This paper also investigates the current innovation practices relating to innovation planning within organisations, innovation sources and innovation trends such as incremental versus radical innovation in the Caribbean. By networking with research personnel and government agencies in selected Caribbean countries, statistical data on SMEs was solicited and collated. In addition, empirical data was acquired from industry practitioners via a survey on innovation. Due to the wide spread of the Caribbean islands along the Caribbean Sea, it was only possible to gather data from some of the islands. Using a comparative overlay of the SME statistics with the empirical innovation data, gaps and opportunities between innovation activities and SMEs were identified. Policy makers and entrepreneurs can benefit from the findings of this paper as it serves to streamline the SME activities with the research and innovation efforts in order to effectively manage resources and derive maximum benefit for Caribbean economies. This paper contributes to the body of knowledge on innovation in the Caribbean region by providing empirical evidence to support the innovation practices of SMEs.","PeriodicalId":369450,"journal":{"name":"First International Technology Management Conference","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121674350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But, in practice, startups are far fewer than outright licenses to ongoing businesses. One of the hurdles to university startups is the need for some entrepreneurial behavior on the part of the university and its faculty members to enable university startups. This paper's thesis is that, today, the income to universities from IP primarily comes from licensing and less through equity holdings in university startups; consequently, potential income-producing inventions are idling on the shelf. There needs to be a more aggressive effort to form new startups with university inventions with equity participation by the inventor and/or the university; but how?","PeriodicalId":369450,"journal":{"name":"First International Technology Management Conference","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128134646","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such companies typically consist of one headquarters and several geographically dispersed and operationally semi-autonomous subsidiaries. It is of great significance what and how the headquarters should provide services to its subsidiaries in terms of inventory and sourcing management. This paper focuses on headquarters-centered sourcing management services. Two sourcing management models are formulated. One is Subsidiary-Autonomous Sourcing Management (SD-ASM) where subsidiaries manage their inventories and place purchasing orders relatively independent of each other. The other is the Headquarters-centered Common Sourcing Management (HQ-CSM) where purchasing orders of all the subsidiaries are processed by the headquarter. In HQ-CSM, two purchasing order management policies are proposed. One is Order Coordination Policy in which common replenishment epochs or time periods are proposed by the headquarter and the subsidiaries are encouraged to coordinate the timing of their orders based on the common replenishment epochs. The other is Order Consolidation Policy in which the subsidiaries are enticed by a price discount to combine the quantity of their orders and the headquarter places a combined order with the supplier. In SD-ASM, each subsidiary places replenishment orders at any time interval corresponding to their economic order quantity (EOQ). In the Order Coordination Policy of HQ-CSM, the classic RAND heuristic to solve the well-known Joint Replenishment Problem is used to find the best common replenishment epoch and the best replenishment timing of each subsidiary. In the Order Consolidation Policy of HQ-CSM, the optimal order quantity of the combined order can be obtained from the mathematical model. Then, the combined order is allocated to the subsidiaries according to the proportional allocation rule. A series of simulation experiments is conducted to compare order quantities and costs in SD-ASM and HQ-CSM. The results show that. This achievement is largely due to the economies of process (simplified ordering process and reduced ordering cost) in the Order Coordination Policy and the economies of scale (large order quantity) in the Order Consolidation Policy.","PeriodicalId":369450,"journal":{"name":"First International Technology Management Conference","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133430180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hypotheses generated from the AMT literature are explored. The main results show evidence against the classic theory that all forms of AMT are complementary. In addition, complementarity of AMT appears to aid in the growth of Canadian firms more so than short-term profit and productivity. Finally, there is evidence to suggest size and industry classification has an effect on AMT complementarity.","PeriodicalId":369450,"journal":{"name":"First International Technology Management Conference","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130422669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research question is; how is it possible to promote the continuity of R&D projects of biotech start-ups at the trade-off situations between the passive attitudes of venture capital from financial markets and the continual progress of life science researches as aptamer, siRNA, iPS cells, and personal medicine. As the research approach, the effectiveness of real options is promising for applying to overcome the valley of deficit. We will examine the gap between the passive waiting option and the active learning option. Another research objective is to find the evidence of the flexible value of compound chooser option for switching chance between two types of projects, that both have independently each negative NPV, one is the base case and the other is inserting the indication expansion for the drug development. We could confirm the possibility of positive NPV by just creating only selection chance from these both alternatives.","PeriodicalId":369450,"journal":{"name":"First International Technology Management Conference","volume":"133 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134172661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The danger to the ship, on board crew and the environment continually change during the entire ship voyage due to numerous unpredictable factors. This paper proposes a new method to assess the maritime traffic safety index of the marine vessel during its journey at sea. The technology recognized as Automatic Identification System (AIS), made a compulsory fitting by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), for ships engaged in international voyages, is used to gather the information needed. This information is then transformed to obtain the various static and dynamic factor values affecting the maritime traffic safety index. Initially, identified factors are grouped under higher level factors to develop a hierarchical structure. Analytic hierarchy process is used to acquire the local weights of the factors at all the levels. Local weights are subsequently converted into normalized global weights for consideration at par. Traffic safety index of the vessel is then estimated using transformed factor values and the normalized global weights. The proposed method could be used in an online assessment of safety index and continual monitoring of variation in it. This would be helpful in the safety management of a marine vessel during its entire navigation.","PeriodicalId":369450,"journal":{"name":"First International Technology Management Conference","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122188938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Deploying IP telephony for voice communications is no longer a matter of “if” but “when” for any enterprise. Time-division multiplexing (TDM) systems are no longer a practical option for new enterprise telephony services because all telephony vendors are phasing out TDM systems in favor of those based on IP. Therefore, enterprises must decide when and how to deploy IP-based systems throughout their operations, with the pace of rollout being based on benefit, capability and cost. In this study, we will be analyzing Aramco Services Company (ASC) in its effort to migrate toward a “Next Generation Network,” since it currently has a traditional telephone system based on TDM that is expected to reach its end of life. In order to keep up with telecom industry trends in a way that is strategically aligned with its corporate objectives, ASC needs to develop strategies and plans that align with the core business objectives of the organization. After performing a strategic analysis by employing strategic management of technology tools and concepts, it is concluded that ASC should consider replacing its current TDM telephone system with a new IP-based system that will allow for full IP functionality and therefore put ASC in a position that will allow the company to realize economic benefits that are unmatched by other technologies and overcome the deficiencies associated with its current telephone environment.","PeriodicalId":369450,"journal":{"name":"First International Technology Management Conference","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123613859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
