En este corto la cineasta revisa sus memorias familiares relacionándolas con la historia olvidada de las mujeres que sufrieron la violencia machista y la criminalización del adulterio femenino bajo el franquismo. Esta obra ofrece un modelo diferenciado de documental histórico-biográfico feminista, ya que se basa en las experiencias de los familiares de la directora y articula un relato de posmemoria por medio del modo performativo del documental. Asimismo, Jiménez Neira expresa una visualidad táctil de las imágenes que genera una memoria corporizada y afectiva explorando los límites de la representación del pasado, el silencio en torno a la figura de su abuela y los vestigios de la dictadura en el presente.Abstract:The aim of this article is to identify the characteristics of the postmemorial feminist documentary by offering an analysis of La mare que els va parir (2008) by Inma Jiménez Neira. In this short, the filmmaker revisits her family memories, linking them to the forgotten history of women who endured domestic violence and the consequences of the criminalization of female adultery during the Franco era. This short provides a differentiated model of feminist historical-biographical documentary since it focuses on the experiences of the filmmaker’s relatives and articulates a postmemorial narrative through the performative mode of documentary film. Likewise, Jiménez Neira expresses a tactile visuality of images that generates embodied and affective memory, exploring the limits of representation of the past, the silence surrounding the figure of her grandmother, and the vestiges of the dictatorship in our present.","PeriodicalId":366492,"journal":{"name":"Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126708033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mientras que el primer proyecto se asocia con cambiar la ecología 'natural' de la ciudad y el segundo del paisaje cultural, ambos Madrid Río y El Matadero mercantilizan los conceptos de la sostenibilidad ecológica y la naturaleza. Analizamos la circulación de estos discursos de lo natural y lo ecológico y cómo se relacionan y se expresan a nivel material en el paisaje urbano. De ahí, apuntamos que estos proyectos encuentran nuevas maneras de encerrar, contener, cercar y vender la \"Naturaleza\" en Madrid a escala global. Como resultado, Madrid Río y El Matadero demuestran cómo la producción cultural estructura la relación y entendimiento de la sensibilidad ecológica. La producción de nuevos ambientes urbanos y la infraestructura que los hacen posible (las condiciones metabólicas y tecnologías que permiten el flujo de energía, comida, información, cuerpos y cosas) están siempre mediados por arreglos institucionales que a veces son democráticos pero a la vez son siempre involucrados en la expansión de la circulación del capital, y por ende un proyecto implícitamente antiecológico.Abstract:This essay considers two closely related high-profile urban renewal projects that have altered the landscape of the southern region of Madrid since 2007: Madrid Río and El Matadero Madrid Centro de Creación Contemporánea. While the former is often cast as renovating the 'natural' ecology of the city and the latter a renovation of its cultural landscape, both Madrid Río and El Matadero commodify the closely related concepts of ecological sustainability and nature. By analyzing the circulation of these discourses of nature and ecological sustainability along with their material expression in the urban landscape, we argue that these projects find new ways of enclosing, containing, packaging and selling Nature in Madrid on a global scale. In doing so, the Madrid Río and Matadero throw into relief the ways that cultural production frames our relationship and understanding of ecological sensibility. The production of new urban environments and the infrastructure that makes them possible (the metabolic conditions and technologies that permit for the flow of energy, food, information, bodies, and things) are always mediated by institutional arrangements that are occasionally democratic, but are always deeply committed to the unending expansion of the circulation of capital—a prospect that is implicitly not ecological.","PeriodicalId":366492,"journal":{"name":"Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116688827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(1995), de Icíar Bollaín, alineándose con las ideas expuestas por Susan Martin-Márquez (2002) sobre nuevas construcciones de hogar en películas de la directora española. En esta, las dos protagonistas, de personalidades y performatividades divergentes, marcadas por la inestabilidad familiar y geográfica, consiguen crear un hogar mostrado como una extensión de la fluidez de estos personajes. Los espacios que aparecen en la película son analizados para presentar cómo las relaciones sociales que se establecen en ellos se materializan en un discurso fílmico que contribuye al cuestionamiento de las históricas asociaciones entre espacio doméstico y mujer y apoya la aparición de nuevos paradigmas al alternarse diferentes tipos de domesticidad.Abstract:Space is a socially constructed notion and according to David Harvey \"the assignment of place within some socio-spatial structure indicates distinctive roles, capacities for action and access to power\" (265), which resulted in home and domestic spaces being codified as feminine. As a consequence, negative connotations were attached to these concepts since they were identified as patriarchal domination centers based on power relations and marked by the subordination and exploitation of women (e.g. Gillian Rose, 1993; McDowell, 1999).The present investigation analyzes the destabilization of this traditional dynamic in the film Hola, ¿estás sola? (1995), by Icíar Bollaín, and aligns itself with the ideas exhibited by Susan Martin-Márquez (2002) about new forms of constructions of the home in films by the Spanish director. In this film, the two protagonists with divergent personalities and performativities and undergoing family and geographical instability, build a home that represents these characters fluency. The spaces depict in the film are analyzed to demonstrate the way in which social relations established are materialized in a filmic discourse. This discourse contributes to the questioning of the historical associations between domestic space and women, contributing to the emergence of new paradigms that are managed through the presentation of different types of domesticity.","PeriodicalId":366492,"journal":{"name":"Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125127733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ejemplo de esta tendencia es la propuesta de Daniel Ares-López, quien aspira a combinar algunas de las principales contribuciones de los llamados nuevos materialismos con algunas de las mejores aportaciones de las tradiciones idealistas y construccionistas, a fin de problematizar la relación entre lo material y lo semiótico, sin obviar el peso del discurso y de la subjetividad en la transformación del mundo material. La propuesta del autor destaca especialmente en el análisis interdisciplinario de fenómenos históricos concretos, teniendo en cuenta la relación entre lo discursivo, lo económico, lo político, lo social, lo antropológico y lo ecológico. Reconociendo el potencial crítico-teórico de la propuesta de Ares-López, así como la influencia actual de los nuevos materialismos, el presente ensayo aspira a subrayar la contribución de algunos antecedentes y referentes importantes para el pensamiento ecointegrador. Tales propuestas pueden ayudar a enmarcar y a expandir nuestra mirada crítica en el presente, sobre todo para no perder de vista las delimitaciones y causalidades que impone sistemáticamente el capitalismo a nivel estructural.Abstract:The influence of the so-called materialist turn is now being felt not only in the field of Hispanic Cultural Studies in general, but also within the Hispanic environmental humanities. An example of this tendency can be found in the work of Daniel Ares-López, who aspires to combine some of the main contributions of the so-called new materialisms along with some of the principal contributions of the idealist and constructionist traditions in order to problematize the relationship between the material and the semiotic, without ignoring the role of discourse and subjectivity in the transformation of the material world. The author's proposal stands out especially in its interdisciplinary analysis of specific historical phenomena, taking into account the relationship between the discursive, the economic, the political, the social, the anthropological and the ecological. While fully recognizing the critical-theoretical potential of Ares-López's proposal, as well as the current influence of the new materialisms, this essay aims to foreground the contribution of various antecedents and important references for those interested in eco-economics. Such proposals can help to frame and expand our critical outlook in the present, especially to properly address the delimitations and causalities that capitalism imposes systematically on a structural level.","PeriodicalId":366492,"journal":{"name":"Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126806235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

En el mismo período, el cine español ha otorgado creciente atención a la comida y la gastronomía; numerosas películas tienen a chefs como protagonistas, sitúan la acción en restaurantes, cocinas y mercados y ponen énfasis en una variedad de elementos culinarios. Este ensayo examina cómo y en qué medida el auge de representaciones culinarias en el cine español de los últimos quince años se correlaciona con el aumento de conocimientos y conciencia crítica socioambiental durante el mismo período. ¿Explican las películas de dónde viene la comida que se presenta en la pantalla? ¿se mencionan los costes socioambientales de la agricultura y ganadería industriales? ¿hay referencias a los desechos y la basura producidos por las industrias agrícola, ganadera y de restaurantes y hostelería? ¿alguna alusión al tratamiento de los animales en las granjas industriales? Las respuestas a estas preguntas ayudan a obtener una mejor comprensión acerca del cine comercial español contemporáneo y, por extensión, de la cultura y la sociedad españolas en estos tiempos de devastación socioambiental.Abstract:The last few decades have brought increasing awareness of the socio-environmental costs and ethical implications of industrial agriculture, the food business, and the consumerist habits of the global North. Concurrent with such rising consciousness, cooking and gastronomy have become prominent in recent Spanish cinema. Numerous films feature cooks and chefs, locate their stories in kitchens and restaurants, and place food on the foreground. This essay examines how and to what degree the rise in representations of food and gastronomy in Spanish films of the past decade and a half reflects, acknowledges, or in any way correlates with the level of socio-environmental knowledge achieved in the same period of time. Do the films allude to the sources of the food that is presented on screen? are the socio-environmental costs of industrial agriculture mentioned? is there any attention given to agricultural waste or to the waste produced by the restaurant business? any references to the treatment of industrial farm animals? The answers help obtain a better understanding of contemporary Spanish mainstream cinema as well as of Spanish culture and society in these times of planetary socio-environmental devastation.","PeriodicalId":366492,"journal":{"name":"Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124525208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

La coda se centra en cómo dichos ensayos revelan varios aspectos de la realidad que tienden a ser ignorados por nuestra cultura: sus puntos muertos. Esta ignorancia cultural responde a intereses económicos a los que dichos puntos muertos ayudan a mantener la explotación económica y las jerarquías sociales existentes. Esta búsqueda de beneficio constante resulta en la financialización y el consumo de la vida en general y genera residuos tóxicos invisibilizados, pero dañinos. De este modo, los flujos globales de energía movilizados por los mercados financieros forman culturas gastronómicas y de entretenimiento ignorantes de su impacto en la tortura animal y la injusticia ambiental y que diseñan espacios urbanos privilegiados donde el consumo de naturaleza deviene en un tropo fetichizado y placentero. Para resistir esta dinámica propongo cuestionar conceptualmente la división humano/no-humano y participar en flujos energéticos alternativos que conecten humanos, plantas, animales y suelos más allá de su valor mercantil.Abstract:This essay concludes the exchanges of scholars in this volume on food studies, urban studies, waste studies, and the new materialities by focusing on what these essays reveal about the aspects of reality that our culture decides to ignore: its blind spots. I explain these purposeful cultural ignorance as dictated by economic interests where not knowing helps to maintain existing economic exploitation and social hierarchies. The search for collateral by the fast growing banking system leads to financialization and consumption of all life (animals, countryside and its ecosystems) and where the unconsumed waste is transformed into toxicity that is invisible albeit ubiquitous and harmful. Thus global-energy flows, driven by financial markets, shape particular food and entertainment cultures that do not know of slaughterhouses and environmental injustice, and design privileged urban spaces where the consumed nature becomes a fetishized and pleasant trope. To resist this dynamic, I propose to conceptually challenge the human/nonhuman divide, and to participate in alternative energy flows that connect humans, plants, animal and the soil outside of their market values.","PeriodicalId":366492,"journal":{"name":"Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124796724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
