The station the team is constructing would be built on a mobile platform for easy transportation for demonstration. The project is designed and inspired to be used for students to charge their phones while exercising on campus. The concept of these stations can be implemented into the recreation activity center (RAC) on campus and outside other buildings on georgia southern university’s campus for use. The station will be constructed from a bicycle and a premanufactured stand with a DC generator that is implemented with a battery for storage. After electrical energy is stored, the power will be converted from 12VDC to 5VDC for the DC circuit, and 12VDC to 120VAC for the AC circuit. The AC power generated by the stand will be used to power small AC devices, such as a clock, or to be supplied back into georgia southern power grid to cut down on power consumption for the university. The project also incorporates other electrical components used for safety and monitoring the bicycle generation station system.","PeriodicalId":361856,"journal":{"name":"2021 9th International Renewable and Sustainable Energy Conference (IRSEC)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124531792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is difficult to evaluate the solar energy potential for areas far from the meteorological stations. Current methods for estimating solar energy are site-dependent or limited to certain areas. Therefore, a method for solar radiation maps using unsupervised machine learning techniques and satellite products is proposed. The method uses the hierarchical dendrogram to determine the suitable number of distinct areas for each month, then this number is used as input for Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (AHC) that clusters areas into the given number for each month. The maps are homogeneous in space and reflect the seasonal character of solar radiation. The resulting solar maps cover all regions of Morocco and can help for preliminary assessment and decision making, especially for areas far from solar radiation ground stations.","PeriodicalId":361856,"journal":{"name":"2021 9th International Renewable and Sustainable Energy Conference (IRSEC)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115812076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The discovery of fossil fuels has in the past decades proven to be a dependable resource for many industries, such as the transportation industry, chemicals industry, energy sector, and more. However, their fast depletion and contribution to the emission of hazardous greenhouse gases (GHG) and climate change have driven the demand for alternative and clean sustainable energy resources. This work identifies some of the physiochemical properties of various waste materials (waste tyres, biomass, plastics, and food waste) and their potential for use in various industrial sectors. The literature data shows that pyrolysis, gasification, and liquefaction (PGL) pathways through the use of different waste feedstocks can produce high-end valuable gas, liquid, and solid end-products. Also, the waste materials have comparable calorific values (CV), as a result, they can be a fuel source for various industrial applications. Lastly, the co-conversion of the different waste feedstocks influences the CV, conversion rates, product quality, and reduces energy requirements.","PeriodicalId":361856,"journal":{"name":"2021 9th International Renewable and Sustainable Energy Conference (IRSEC)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116216233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, cable loses, conversion losses and cloud coverage can also affect the power output. In this work, we propose to build a deep learning model that will implicitly take all these parameters into account and provide us with a prediction of the output power generated by PV power plants installed. The Artificial Neural Network used takes as an input the solar radiation, ambient temperature and modules’ temperature, and as target the solar power. The ANN model was trained in a first experiment to give an hourly prediction. The second one provides an entire day forecast. The obtained results are very promising and the predicted output power profile is in good agreement with the measured one.","PeriodicalId":361856,"journal":{"name":"2021 9th International Renewable and Sustainable Energy Conference (IRSEC)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124876542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This phenomenon can be mitigated by resilient design of buildings and urban spaces. In this context, we propose this study to analyze the impact of the aspect ratio and green surfaces on the urban microclimate of the city of Tangier located in the north west of Morocco (Mediterranean climate). To achieve this, the urban microclimate simulation tools ENVI-met was used. So, the paper proposes implementing micro-scale desalination system utilizing clean energy sources. Reverse osmosis is a common technique used to desalinate water. In small scale systems it is a preferred method because of the minimal amounts of energy that are needed to power the system. For this paper, wind and solar energy are used to supply power to the system. This power is used to power a pump which will push the water through the filter, all of which is automated based off of the weight of the tank.","PeriodicalId":361856,"journal":{"name":"2021 9th International Renewable and Sustainable Energy Conference (IRSEC)","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134461706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Identifying optimal locations for wind farm energy is a key issue in the wind energy development process. However, site selection is a complex study that involves not only technical considerations, but also economic, social and environmental requirements. Our research aims to develop a comprehensive and multi-criteria approach based on GIS and MCDM for the assessment of suitable locations for wind farm energy in Morocco.. This paper presents the main results of our approach based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Weighted Linear Combination (WLC) methods to determine weights of sitting criteria (factors and constraints), and to develop a composite suitability map from single-factor maps representing these criteria. The research leads to a national suitability map for wind farms locations to support Masen’s sustainable spatial policy related to wind energy.","PeriodicalId":361856,"journal":{"name":"2021 9th International Renewable and Sustainable Energy Conference (IRSEC)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114517499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This review aims to highlight the potential impact of inadequate capacity for medical waste management during the pandemic phase, assess existing capacity in South Africa, and discuss the way forward. Key findings are; mismanaged medical waste can result in the secondary transmission of diseases and medical waste capacity can undoubtedly be compromised by outbreaks of diseases. South Africa is at a vantage point where it can learn from other countries such as China whose pre-Covid-19 capacities were overwhelmed by the surge in medical waste. With around 34.1% of households lacking waste collection services, the current medical waste management systems may not be fully adequate to handle the expected increase in waste as Covid-19 infections rise. To prevent challenges associated with poor waste management practices; as resources are channeled towards containing the Covid-19 pandemic, equal effort should also be directed towards increasing the country’s medical waste management capacity including transportation services and labour. A full audit of the systems across the country is required. Existing infrastructure that can be utilized, including cement kilns and furnaces, should be identified, while mobile incinerators will also be advantageous.","PeriodicalId":361856,"journal":{"name":"2021 9th International Renewable and Sustainable Energy Conference (IRSEC)","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134416898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
