Commonly, English teachers use songs to develop students' listening because it provides a fun approach for improving vocabulary and perceiving different accents. However, every time a teacher needs to prepare a listening lesson using songs, s/he needs to search for songs that contain the words that are being studied in that lesson, and also download and edit the lyrics, substituting the words by blank spaces to be filled by the students while they listen to the music. This paper presents the application of Information Retrieval (IR) techniques to index and retrieve songs according to a set of intended words, besides a module that prepares the songs for listening lessons, substituting the terms by blank spaces. Results reveal that the tool is well-succeeded to provide the aforementioned functionalities. Moreover, a teacher used the tool in the context of her English class, approving the solution provided and contributing to reduce the effort for preparing a pedagogical activity for a listening lesson.","PeriodicalId":356549,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 19th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134024382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The linked video lectures are expected to provide more detailed account of the corresponding off-topic concept. The system is realized with three modules: off-topic identification, topic base generation and segment linking. We modelled the problem of finding off-topic concept identification task as a community structure analysis in concept similarity graph. Word embedding-based technique has been used to generate topic specific video segments that act as the targets of off-topic concept connection candidates. The segmented videos are indexed using extracted topic by Solr search engine and are retrieved against queries formulated from offtopic concepts. The system has been evaluated on video lecture picked up from NPTEL MOOC platform. User study on the quality of recommendation has been found to be promising.","PeriodicalId":356549,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 19th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132712045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, this does not extend to serious games which, in particular, require involvement of non-developer stakeholders. We present the first evaluation of uAdventure, an easy-to-use game development environment for narrative point-and-click graphic adventure games. uAdventure is a re-implementation of the previously-validated eAdventure environment on top of the Unity game engine. The idea is to get most of the advantages of the Unity professional environment at a fraction of its complexity, and without requiring programming knowledge to use it. uAdventure include educational-oriented affordances, such as assessment and learning analytics; and has been formatively evaluated by heterogeneous users with different degrees of technical knowledge. The results of our evaluation show much simpler story creation for profiles that had no previous knowledge of the engine, and positive feedback from more technical profiles which would use the tool as a prototyping tool for complex projects.","PeriodicalId":356549,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 19th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"205 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134529579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the applications is the augmented book that adds virtual features in printed books. Textbooks are an expensive investment for government, but students are big consumers of digital material. In this work, we have developed an experiment in which we model maps from the textbook of three aspects of the African continent so that students can visualize them in 3D on their smartphones. We conducted a section where they used the application and then held a competition in teams answering questions based on the maps of the application. Pre and post-tests were administered to verify if there was any improvement in performance, and students completed a six-question survey to answer their satisfaction with the application and experience.","PeriodicalId":356549,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 19th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"381 1-3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114016248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using log data collected from an online judge, we have compiled a set of successful features correlated with the student grade and applying them on a database representing 486 CS1 students. We used this set of features in ML pipelines which were optimised, featuring a combination of an automated approach with an evolutionary algorithm and hyperparameter-tuning with random search. As a result, we achieved an accuracy of 75.55%, using data from only the first two weeks to predict the student final grades. We show how our pipeline outperforms state-of-the-art work on similar scenarios.","PeriodicalId":356549,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 19th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121845442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, in some situations, the use of scripts causes motivational problems which in turn may lead to negative learning outcomes. In the last years, gamification has emerged as a promising technique to motivate and engage students towards learning process. However, gamification requires personalization based on knowledge about game design, and their impact on the students' motivation and learning outcomes. To address these issues, we proposed the formalization of an ontology to support the gamification of CL scenarios in which the game elements are tailored for each situation. These CL scenarios are known as ont-gamified CL sessions, and this paper presents the results of one empirical study conducted to evaluate their effects on the participants' intrinsic motivation and learning outcomes. This study was carried out as quasi-experiment with 62 undergraduate Brazilian students who participated either in non-gamified or ont-gamified CL sessions. Findings indicate that the intrinsic motivation was better in ont-gamified CL sessions, and that there was no significant difference on learning outcomes. Based on these results, we concluded that our approach is likely to deal with motivational problems in scripted CL.","PeriodicalId":356549,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 19th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"41 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120844472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
