Making patrons feel comfortable requires an approach that prioritizes empathy and honesty. This essay explores many promising advances in the fight against library anxiety, including prioritizing librarian contact, reevaluating library spaces, emphasizing digital services, enlisting student workers as partners, and examining fees and fines. The essay concludes with a list of recommendations for making the library and librarians feel more welcoming.","PeriodicalId":35381,"journal":{"name":"Public Services Quarterly","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79972750","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The book is organized into four discrete chapters, with many sug-gested readings deftly woven into the essays. Particularly worth noting are the thoughtful reflections from librarians in the field after each chapter. The authors have reached out widely into the library field to explore many different points of view. These reflective pieces discuss educational challenges and practices of librarians in the classroom and educational spaces in general. They have been written by a broad mix of librarians, including Cynthia Mari Orozco, Librarian for Equitable Services at East Los Angeles College; Naomi Binnie, the Digital Education Librarian at the University of Michigan; and Yi Ding, Online Instructional Design Librarian at California State University at Northridge, among many others. The authors begin the first section with a brief introductory history of deficit thinking in educational practice, which many readers new to this subject will find illuminating. As the authors describe this slim book, it is meant to be between the practical and the theoretical. For a topic that may be new to many academic librarians, it offers a way to understand and navigate the principles behind “ anti-deficit thinking ” and how to dismantle it in an easily understandable style.","PeriodicalId":35381,"journal":{"name":"Public Services Quarterly","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75534577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In an educational environment, Universal Design principles seek to make education as usable and accessible as possible across a wide range of students. Library instruction is one venue that would benefit from applying Universal Design, but many academic librarians teach under a one-shot instruction mode, which limits their ability to incorporate many of the strategies described in the existing literature. The purpose of this article is to identify Universal Design strategies that suit one-shot instruction, thus lowering the barrier for librarians who wish to learn about and incorporate Universal Design in their instruction.","PeriodicalId":35381,"journal":{"name":"Public Services Quarterly","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78953125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eaton takes her analysis a step further than many other publications on academic integrity, however, by delving into the risk factors that lead to plagiaristic activity. She devotes an entire chapter to diversity, equity, and inclusion, where she addresses how plagiarism correlates with the racial inequities and systemic biases that exist in higher education. Eaton also provides practical advice for educators related to evaluation and assessment, reducing file sharing, creating academic-integrity policy, and addressing plagiarism. What fundamentally sets this book apart from others on the topic is Eaton’s philosophy that plagiarism should be approached with a teaching and learning mindset. Rather than merely detecting plagiarism, instilling fear in students, and punishing violators, stakeholders should focus instead on using engaging methods to educate students to become ethical learners. She uses a “multistakeholder systems approach” (p. 58) to illustrate how academic integrity is cultivated by the many stakeholders having roles in educational systems. She advises faculty to teach students that referencing and citing are part of a knowledge-building process rather than simply a procedural chore necessary to avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism in Higher Education: Tackling Tough Topics in Academic Integrity was written with a broad audience in mind. While its content is relevant for students, faculty members, teaching assistants, academic librarians, writing tutors, and other student-focused staff members, any stakeholder concerned with issues of academic integrity in higher education will find the work decidedly beneficial. It is therefore recommended for all academic and public libraries.","PeriodicalId":35381,"journal":{"name":"Public Services Quarterly","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82064132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

COVID-19 further accelerated the adoption of these modalities among researchers, educators, and artists. In response, libraries, archives, and museums have strengthened their support of 3D/VR content development and are actively seeking effective methods of preservation and long-term access. This article explores some popular methods of 3D/VR capture and creation supported by such institutions, as well as the current state of digital preservation practices in libraries and other cultural heritage organizations.","PeriodicalId":35381,"journal":{"name":"Public Services Quarterly","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72379417","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To assess librarians’ knowledge of ASD, the authors administered an ASD training manual and subsequent survey to academic librarians at a liberal arts college library in the Southeast. The librarians found the training about ASD itself to be most valuable. Additionally, they gave positive assessments of their ability to serve students with ASD both at the individual and institutional levels. This suggests that librarians recognize the importance of serving this unique population.","PeriodicalId":35381,"journal":{"name":"Public Services Quarterly","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78539541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
