This was followed by suffering for 13 years from the effect of economic sanctions. The 2003 military invasion and occupation by coalition forces added more death and injuries. We wanted to know how frequent physical injuries were to Iraqi children, and how inflicted and what the consequences were. Mothers who were admitted with their children to the Children Welfare Hospital, Baghdad, in the period July 1–December 31, 2004, were interviewed about violence to their children, relatives, and neighbours that they had witnessed. Of the 218 mothers interviewed, 50 witnessed injuries (23%); 28 of those who witnessed injuries were from the city of Baghdad and 22 from towns in the central part of the country. Twenty two injuries were by gunshots, 14 by aerial attack or tank bombs, and others were due to explosions. Head injuries were the most common. Twenty of the injured children recovered with no disability, two lost fingers, two got blind, two were limping, and one had persistent backache. In conclusion, Iraqi Children were commonly victims of violence during invasion and occupation of Iraq. There seems to be inadequate protection for children during the years 2003–2004.","PeriodicalId":351803,"journal":{"name":"medical journal of islamic world academy of sciences","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116506138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were collected in a policlinic of a public hospital between 1 and 30 December 2010 through questionnaires from patients with type 2 diabetes who were older than 18 years and accepted to be interviewed. For each correct answer related to DHL situations, the variable was given 1 point and for others, 0 point was given. Thus, a scoring was made to evaluate DHL levels. 62,2% of participants were women, 81,4% were over 44, 23,8% were illiterate, 53,3% were unemployed, 32% had a monthly income equal to or below 700 TL. It was found that 38,8% of participants had difficulties in reading and writing skills. 61,1% of participants had type 2 diabetes for five years and longer, 21,5% did not show up regularly for control, 71,7% never attended educational meetings for diabetes, 93,5% did not know their HbA1c values, 16,9% changed potions without asking their doctors, and 33,9% wrongly interpreted usage instruction sample (3×1 drug use). There was a significant difference between participants’ DHL scores and education status (p˂0,001). DHL averages of patients whose duration of illness was 5 to 14 years were significantly higher than those whose duration of illness was less than 4 years or more than 15 years (p=0,036). Estimated relative risk in regression model of being high in comparison to those having difficulty in at least one of reading or writing activities was 2,697 (95%GA: 1,208-6,022). The estimated relative risk of being high for DHL scores of those, whose duration of illness was 15 and more years, was equal to 5,437 (95%GA: 1,798-16,436) in comparison to patients who had been diseased for 4 or fewer years. Factors such as education, reading and writing skills, area of settlement, and family support which have all been found to affect DHL scores should be given due attention in treatments of patients with type 2 diabetes.","PeriodicalId":351803,"journal":{"name":"medical journal of islamic world academy of sciences","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133337552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is seen in the form of pulsatile masses containing a thrombus surrounded by a fibrous capsule that does not include all the arterial wall layers (1, 2). The most common cause of pseudoaneurysms is arterial trauma, and pseudoaneurysms in upper extremity peripheral arteries are seen much less frequently than those in lower extremity peripheral arteries (2). As upper extremity pseudoaneurysms can cause significant disabilities such as the loss of fingers or the upper extremity. Hence, diagnosis and surgical treatment are important (3). The pseudoaneurysm is formed of a fibrous capsule extending from the external wall. When a traumatic pseudoaneurysm is formed, it can create pressure on the surrounding nerve or vessel by expanding or lead to the formation of an embolism as thrombosis within the vessel and/or in the distal region (4). This study discussed the successful surgical treatment of a patient with left axillary artery pseudoaneurysm, which developed 1 year after a stab injury. Considering the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation applied to this patient in the light of information available in the literature, the study aimed to shed light on the vascular surgery applications in the patient’s native place Somalia.","PeriodicalId":351803,"journal":{"name":"medical journal of islamic world academy of sciences","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114493358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
