On one side, students demonstrate their capability to contribute in the construction of disciplinary knowledge (One’s Knowledge). On the other side, students recognize others author ́s contribution in the discipline (Knowledge of Others). In the context of a qualitative study, we determined the discourse resources used in the communication of One’s Knowledge in the Theoretical Framework section of Bachelors, Masters and PhD Thesis within the discipline of Linguistic. We analyzed a corpus of 36 Thesis using our own categories, validated through expert judgment. Results show a series of differences between degrees considering frequency and variety of discourse sources; PhD students use the widest variety of One ́s Knowledge discourse resources in their Thesis. This phenomenon could be explained by a higher level of knowledge, insertion and consolidation among doctorate students. In conclusion, the present research is a valuable input of empirical evidence for an overlooked section in Thesis genre analysis, and for the discipline of Linguistic. Moreover, the generation of granular level and high specialized evidence furthers the understanding of the discursive construction of disciplinary knowledge, and could assist facilitators and students while writing their Thesis.","PeriodicalId":35168,"journal":{"name":"RLA","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4067/S0718-48832018000100115","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47077981","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This subject has been described in different languages, in Spanish it has not been studied in depth. In this context, the present work seeks to describe and analyze, qualitatively, the errors in the use of prepositions in Chilean children diagnosed with SLI. For this, oral narratives were analyzed produced by 38 children starting preschool between 5 and 5 and 11 month of age, and diagnosed with SLI. Narratives were elided through recounting and were phonetically transcribed. Thereafter, contexts where prepositions appeared were analyzed and it was determined if they matched with adequate use, elisions, or particle substitutions. Data indicate that there are three grammatical factors which seem to influence in the production of grammatical deviations in contributions that incorporate prepositions: (i) the functional nature of prepositions, (ii) the obligatory nature of the components, and (iii) the incongruence between the thematic roles and syntactic functions.","PeriodicalId":35168,"journal":{"name":"RLA","volume":"27 1","pages":"161-184"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86674221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

En la primera parte, y a partir de la combinacion de estudios previos sobre variacion de registros comunicativos, la teoria de la identidad social y la linguistica cognitiva, se proponen tres nuevos conceptos para el analisis discursivo: ‘Rol Modulador de Registro’ (RMR), ‘brujula del registro’ y ‘registro-pivote’. La forma en la que funcionan en el discurso digital se ilustra en la segunda parte, con el analisis de un corpus de foros de discusion. Los resultados demuestran que cada perfil de foro despliega una gama diferente de RMR, junto con sus registros asociados, y que todos ellos tienden a emerger y alternar alrededor de un registropivote prominente. En nuestro corpus se identifican tres claros registros-pivote con sus rasgos linguisticos distintivos. El estudio sustenta la estrecha relacion entre identidades relacionales o roles comunicativos y registros linguisticos en el discurso digital y facilita herramientas discursivas para el analisis, la comprension y el uso de la variacion del registro en la interaccion actual a traves de internet. EnglishThe paper studies how communicative roles and registers are expressed in an interdependent way, influencing each other in current forums. In the first part, by combining previous insights in register variation analysis, social identity theory and cognitive linguistics, three new concepts for linguistic analysis are proposed: ‘Register-Modulating Role’ (RMR), ‘Register compass’ (R-compass) and ‘pivotal register’. The way they function in digital discourse is illustrated in the second part by analysing an open discussion forum sample corpus. The results show that each forum’s profile displays a different array of RMR, together with their associated registers, which tend to spin around a prominent pivotal register. In our corpus three salient pivotal registers are identified, together with their associated registers and distinctive language features. The study substantiates the close connection between relational identities or roles and registers in digital discourse, and facilitates linguistic devices for a better use and understanding of register variation and forum discourse.","PeriodicalId":35168,"journal":{"name":"RLA","volume":"48 1","pages":"143-167"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82368849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Este fenomeno ofrece muchos angulos de interes. Entre ellos, el presente articulo tiene como objetivo determinar si el alumnado estadounidense que se integra en el sistema universitario espanol a traves de un programa de Study Abroad experimenta algun tipo de choque cultural academico, asi como averiguar su magnitud y caracteristicas, en caso de que asi sea. Para ello, hemos utilizado una metodologia cualitativa mediante el diseno de un cuestionario que fue diseminado entre las cinco sedes del programa de Study Abroad del ambito espanol (Madrid, Alicante, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca y Sevilla). El estudio se ha realizado durante el curso academico 2015-2016 y el numero de participantes ha sido de 95 estudiantes. Los resultados muestran la existencia de un evidente choque cultural academico, que describimos con detalle, causado por las diferencias del sistema universitario respecto a la cultura academica espanola y la falta de conocimientos previos sobre ella. Confiamos en que investigaciones como esta contribuyan a paliarlo y se establecen las futuras lineas de trabajo que pueden seguirse para avanzar en este ambito. EnglishThe process of internationalization of university studies has contributed to a consistent increase in the number of foreign students currently enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Spanish speaking universities where the target language in the classroom (ie. Spanish) is the second language of the foreign student body. This phenomenon lends itself to many different interesting research angles, one of which is explored in this article. Throughout this work our objective is to determine if American students who directly enroll in the Spanish university system through a Study Abroad program experience some type of academic culture shock, and if so, in what way is this experienced and to what degree. In order to achieve this objective we employed qualitative methodology to design a survey that was then sent to all five offices of a Study Abroad program located in Spain (in Madrid, Alicante, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca and Seville). The study took place during the 2015-2016 academic year with a total number of 95 participants. The results proved that there is a significant “clash” in academic culture (which we discuss in detail throughout this article) caused by the differences that the Spanish academic culture and university system present to this group of students, as well as a general lack of prior knowledge in this regard on the part of the American student body. We believe that this type of research will not only help to alleviate these issues, but also create a clear path for future research that will inevitably continue to contribute advancements to this practically un","PeriodicalId":35168,"journal":{"name":"RLA","volume":"10 1","pages":"13-38"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79700163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Los autores que caracterizan estas unidades con la propiedad de la arbitrariedad no ofrecen una definicion del termino y, en general, la vinculan con el uso linguistico, que determina las restricciones de seleccion del colocativo por parte de la base. El concepto de motivacion tampoco es definido al aplicarse a las colocaciones, aunque en la actualidad se prefiere esta propiedad para su caracterizacion y no la de arbitrariedad. Desde esta perspectiva, las colocaciones se consideran motivadas porque un colocativo no es una eleccion individual de una base; al contrario, las bases forman clases semanticas y presentan algun rasgo, generalmente semantico, compartido con el colocativo. Sin negar este hecho, en el articulo se parte de la concepcion de Saussure sobre la arbitrariedad y de una definicion de motivacion entroncada con el estructuralismo europeo. Se concluye que todas las locuciones son relativamente arbitrarias, es decir, parcialmente motivadas y que presentan los tipos de motivacion morfologica y semantica. Esta vision teorica de las colocaciones tiene implicaciones aplicadas en el ambito de la lexicografia y de la ensenanzaaprendizaje de la lengua. EnglishIn this article we examine the concept of arbitrariness and motivation in the area of collocations. The authors who characterise these units as having the property of arbitrariness do not offer a definition of the term, and generally link it to linguistic usage, which determines the limits in the choice of a collocative by the base. Neither is the concept of motivation defined on applying it to collocations, although this concept is currently preferred for their characterisation, in preference to arbitrariness. From this standpoint, collocations are considered to be motivated because a collocative is not an individual choice made by a base; on the contrary, bases form semantic classes and show certain features, usually semantic ones, which are shared with the collocative. Without wishing to deny this fact, this article starts from Saussure’s concept of arbitrariness and a definition of motivation linked to European structuralism. The conclusion is that all idioms are relatively arbitrary, that is to say, partially motivated, and that they present both morphological and semantic motivation. This theoretical vision of collocations has implications that are applied in the field of lexicography and in language teaching and learning.","PeriodicalId":35168,"journal":{"name":"RLA","volume":"26 1","pages":"121-142"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89803501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
