Probiotics bacteria must have the potential to serve as a host of antibiotic resistance genes with the risk of transferring the genes in many lactic acid bacteria and other pathogenic bacteria. Many Lactic acid bacteria may carry potentially transmissible plasmid-encoded antibiotic resistance genes. This antibiotic resistance can cause significant harm and suffering to the host. The study aim was to investigate the antibiotic resistance in indigenous lactobacillus isolates and existence of plasmids in the indigenous lactobacillus isolates and relationship between the antibiotic resistance and plasmid. All 79 isolates were offered different resistance pattern to the toxicity of bile salts and were also screened for the antibiotic resistance. The plasmid profiles of all strains were investigated and curing of plasmid was also done. Methodology: A total of 13 female & 46 male trained players engaged in different sports disciplines were selected. Anthropometric indices were measured using standard procedures and compared with their respective standards. Results: Irrespective of sex & sport disciplines, all players were found to be shorter than their respective standard heights. Less than 50 % groups of male players were found meeting the desirable body weight standards. Positive correlations were derived between height & weight for majority of sport groups of female & male players. Body weight was found to be directly proportional to shoulder width with positive correlation. Body mass index revealed stronger correlation with weight than height.Conclusion: Even though players were not meeting the standard norms of height & weight, they were successfully competing either at state or University level which could be attributed to mental strength, motivation & physical adaptations of players. INTRODUCTION There is a wealth of scientific & empirical evidence to support the claim that there are body size differences among athletes in different sports & games & among events within the same sport. The age, height & body size of national & international players are of interest from several points of view. Chronological age of top class athletes indicates the time at which peak performance might be expected. It is lower in case of swimming & higher in case of track & field & still higher in case of team game’s athletes. Peak performance age in different sports disciplines is associated with the time to start sport training in a particular sport & time needed to develop the necessary physique & level of performance. With regards to height & weight, certain body dimensions are necessary for success in selected sports. In some games, lighter body weight & comparatively smaller body size is required whereas in others, heavier weight & huge body size is needed to achieve optimum performance. Athletics, game or contest, played individually or in team, involves physical strength, skill & endurance. It needs long & stronger legs / calf & thighs to run & cover the distance in minimum time period. Badminton, a game for two or four players, using light weight rackets along with a shuttlecock back & forth over a net, trying to keep it from hitting the ground, requires light but strong bodies. Basketball players need long upper & lower extremities make them suitable to catch the ball with jumps, provide them with a wider reach during the passes & make it easier for them while throwing the ball into the basket. Volleyball requires tall players to play the game by hitting an inflated ball back & forth over a high net. It needs strong shoulde","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115703208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the data regarding this association are scarce in Southern Kerala, India. In this study, we report the prevalence of CD in patients with T1DM in southern Kerala using tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTGA) as a screening test. METHADOLOGY: One hundred patients with T1DM (58 women and 42 men) aged 21.8 ± 8.86 years (age range: 7-50 years) were compared with 150 healthy people (82 women and 68 men) aged 28.9 ± 9.07 years (age range: 4-50 years). All subjects were serologically screened for the presence of tTGA. Total immunoglobin A (IgA) was obtained to investigate IgA deficiency. Subjects positive for tTGA and deficient for IgA were submitted to upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. RESULTS: Eight patients with T1DM (8%) and three of the controls (2%) were positive for tTGA (P=0.023), while only 3% of the tTGA positive T1DM patients underwent duodenal biopsy and all of them showed partial or total villous atrophy. The mean age of tTGA, positive cases were significantly lower than tTGA negative ones (mean difference 7.17; 95% CI: 0.82-13.52). None of the tTGA positive T1DM patients had a history of chronic diarrhea, but one out of eight tTGA positives reported history of dermatitis (P=0.001). In addition, none of the tTGA positive subjects presented IgA deficiency. There was a significant difference in history of chronic diarrhea (P= 0.006) and autoimmune diseases (P =0.001) between patients with T1DM and controls. CONCLUSION: This study showed higher prevalence of CD in patients with T1DM than in general population of southern Kerala and the data lend support to recommend regular screening for CD in all patients with T1DM.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"318 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115912794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methodology: Bangladesh Demographic Health Survey data 2004 for last five years (N=3329) were used for this study. Women's nutritional status was defined in terms of Body Mass Index (BMIwt in kg/ht in m2). Descriptive and multivariate logistic regression methods were employed in analyzing the data. Results: It was observed that although maximum numbers of rural mothers were nourished (56.3%) a large portion of them was acute malnourished (43.7%) and the mean height for all ages of women is 150.43 centimeters. This study elucidates that maternal weight was consistently lower for older women and women with higher fertility. Bivariate analysis shows that mothers whose mobility about own health care was not restricted are in the higher percentage of normal weight (57.9%) also the percentage of having normal weight is higher among mothers who gave their first birth at middle age (\"e30 years) than among the mothers give their first birth during adolescence and women with higher age group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis shows that women who worked for cash were two-and-a-half times more probability of becoming nourished than among women did not work for cash. Women whose husbands had a lower status job were suffering more from acutely malnutrition. It was also found that women with lower household assets index have the highest rates of malnutrition. The other main contributing factors likely to affect nutritional status of women were respondent's education, husband's education, vitamin A and iron supplementation. Conclusions: The results indicate several policy options: (a) dietary intake needs to be improved for older higher fertility women; (b) it is equally important that education for women and increased cash incomes is emphasized to bring about a lasting impact on the overall health and nutritional condition of women; (c) there is need to ensure availability of iron and vitamin A supplements; (d) much more attention needs to be placed on reducing household poverty and increasing rural nutritional resources; (e) greater efforts should be made to increase availability and access to food by households and by women. Poor rural households need access to skills training for homestead gardening, income-generating activities and credit which will allow them to purchase or grow more food.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127732895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the perspective study, one hundred ten adolescent girls between ages 13 -16 years of low socio-economic group of district Kurukshetra (Haryana) were screened out for their hemoglobin level and for nutritional as well as socio-economic status. Data regarding socio-economic status was collected through pre-structured questionnaire cum interview method. Nutritional status was adjudged by their anthropometric measurements (height, weight and BMI) and nutrient intake. Dietary intake of selected subjects was adjudged by 24 hour recall method for three consecutive days and intake of nutrients from the diet was calculated with help of nutritive value of Indian foods. Hemoglobin level of each subject was measured by using Sahil's technique. Out of one hundred ten girls, more than two third (81.81 per cent) girls were suffering from various degree of anemia as their Hb level ranges between 6.6 g/dl to 11.0 g/dl. The dietary data revealed that nutrient intake especially iron intake was very much less than as recommended by ICMR for adolescent girls. Due to low dietary intake, their weight was found less and the subjects were in energy deficit state. Analysis of data further disclosed that prevalence of anemia was directly related to family size and type of family as that affect quality and quantity of food consumption. Thus, inspite of various welfare programmes, it appears from the study that these girls are not benefited from any scheme run by government such as ICDS .","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128068803","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
