They function to detoxify excessive free radical build-up, which results from normal metabolism and environmental stresses like air pollution. Most studies of dietary antioxidants showed beneficial effects in reducing the risk of chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease. In contrast, intervention studies using antioxidants from dietary supplements did not typically show these positive results; sometimes dietary supplement use increased disease risk. Herein is reviewed the definition of antioxidants, physiological actions, and selected studies of foods and supplements containing them. In addition, summarized are new studies on the antioxidative effects of raisins and cardiovascular disease risk reduction.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"539 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123112354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: Participants (n=383) volunteered for the two-phase 24-week intervention. Phases were comprised of equivalent intervention components; one hour of physical activity, 1.5 hour nutrition education, cooking demonstrations, and social support. Phase I was led by the intervention staff, and phase II by lay congregation members. Measurement of body mass index (kg/m 2 ), waist-hip circumference, arterial blood pressure, non-fasting glucose and daily minutes of activity were obtained at baseline, 12-weeks and 24-weeks. Results: A significant main effect for time for BMI, activity, and systolic blood pressure was shown. No main effect for diastolic blood pressure or blood glucose was found. Interpretation & conclusions: Interventions within a church-based environment may reduce obesity and associated disease risk. This study was conducted to investigate the possible contribution and impact of anaemia and iron status on pregnancy and its outcomes in a Nigerian population.METHODS: Three hundred and forty nine (349) pregnant women aged 15-40 years (mean; 27. 04  4. 75 years) at gestational age = 25 week (mean 21.77  3.14 wks) were analysed for plasma iron and haemoglobin using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer and Cyanmethaemoglobin method, respectively. The women were followed-up weekly till delivery after which neonatal anthropometrics and other birth outcomes were recorded. RESULTS: Anaemia and iron deficiency were recorded in 252 (72.2%) and 222 (63.6%) of the women, respectively, with 0.3% severely anaemic while 38.4% and 33.5% were moderately and mildly anaemic respectively. An inverse relationship was observed between anaemia and iron deficiency with lower prevalence of iron deficiency found among groups with high prevalence of anaemia. Parity and antenatal attendance have significant (p < 0.05) effect on maternal haemoglobin with multiparous women having higher prevalence of anaemia and more than 10 antenatal attendance being associated with lower anaemia prevalence. On the pregnancy outcomes, neither maternal iron status nor anaemia was related to birth weight. However, higher foetal head circumferences (34.09  2.61 vs. 33.41 2. 68cm, p < 0.05) and more preterm deliveries (< 37wk) were found in anaemic than non-anaemic women (19 vs. 3, p = 0.001). Although no significant difference in maternal concomitant illnesses during pregnancy was found either in the iron or the anaemia groups, surgically delivered babies were significantly (p < 0.05) more in iron deficient than in the iron adequate group (16 vs. 1, p = 0.021). CONCLUSSION: Maternal anaemia was associated with premature delivery, delivery through caesarean section, and infants with lower head circumference. Thus, there is indication that apart from iron deficiency, other factors that predispose pregnant women to the development of anaemia may play important role in determining pregnancy outcomes.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"59 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133511671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and causes of copper and zinc deficiencies in a population of pregnant Nigerians living in Abakaliki, south eastern, Nigeria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Plasma copper and zinc concentrations of 349 apparently healthy pregnant women attending antenatal clinic of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Federal Medical Centre, Abakaliki between July 2007 and September, 2008 were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. RESULTS: Of the 349 pregnant women, 45.8% and 58.2% respectively were deficient in zinc and copper with mean plasma concentrations of 2.65 ˇ˝ 1.16ˇ˝mol/l for zinc and 3.26 ˇ˝ 1.80 ˇ˝mol/l for copper while 23.8% were deficient in both copper and zinc. Frequent intakes of carbohydrate- and cereal-based food, and sparingly intakes of meat, diary products, nuts and vegetables were associated with high prevalence of copper and zinc deficiency. Although higher levels of copper and zinc were found in economically advantaged groups and plasma zinc inversely related to parity, copper level was found to be higher in women who have had more deliveries. CONCLUSION: High prevalence of copper and zinc deficiencies was found among the pregnant women in this region, which is possibly related to sub-optimal dietary intakes. In the light of the adverse effects of copper and zinc deficiencies on pregnancy and its outcomes, it is recommended that in addition to food diversification and biofortification, supplemental copper and zinc may be considered as ways of improving child and maternal health in this population.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"257 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115795108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study is aimed at validating the anti-diabetic property of these plants, its effect on body weight and also to screen for the presence of any bioactive component of the plant that may be responsible for any anti-diabetic effect. Twenty-four presumably healthy wistar rats of average weight 150g were randomly distributed into four groups (A, B, C and D) of 6 rats each. A single intraperitoneal dose of 65mg/kgbwt of streptozotocin was used to induce experimental diabetes in rats in groups B, C and D while group A was left non-diabetic. Groups A and B served as the negative and positive control groups respectively and received 500mg/kgbwt of Anacardium occidentale stem-bark extract and group D received 5IU of insulin. Groups A, C and D showed significant decrease in fasting blood sugar (p<.05) while in group B (positive control) the drop in fasting blood sugar for statistically insignificant. Groups A, C and D showed significant weight gain (p<.05) while Group B showed a significant weight loss (p<.05). Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, phenols, oxalate and phytate while the micronutrient composition included some vitamins ( A, B, B2, B3 and C) and some minerals (Na, K, Ca, Mg, P, Fe, Cu and Se). Proximate composition revealed the presence of protein, carbohydrate, fat and fibre.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126463284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
