Methods: This study was conducted on 40 physically healthy male volunteers during a pre-experimental period of 30 days and an experimental period of 364 days. Subjects were equally divided into four groups: unsupplemented control subjects (UCS), unsupplemented experimental subjects (UES), supplemented control subjects (SCS), and supplemented experimental subjects (SES). A daily supplementation of 3.0 mmol of magnesium-chloride per kg body weight was given to the subjects in the SCS and SES groups. Results: The muscle Mg content decreased (p<.05) and plasma Mg concentration, and Mg loss in urine and feces increased (p<.05) in the SES and UES groups compared to their pre-experimental levels and the values in their respective control groups (SCS and UCS).The muscle Mg content decreased (p<.05) more, and plasma Mg concentration, and Mg loss in urine and feces increased more (p<.05) in the SES group than in the UES group. Conclusion: It is concluded that muscle Mg content is not decreased by the Mg deficient diet and bodily Mg loss is not increased by the higher muscle Mg content but due to the inability of the body to use Mg; this is because muscle Mg level cannot reduce with Mg supplements and Mg loss cannot increase with muscle Mg deficiency unless Mg deposition decreases.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116205531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All of us must make it a priority to make changes in our lives in order to improve the health and vitality that we all want to hold onto in our later years. Whether you believe it or not – if you work in the healthcare field you are being scrutinized by others for your own habits. We can no longer say “do as I say and not as I do” if we truly want to make an impact on the lives of others. We must become educated as to what is needed to keep our body systems maintained and to protect our cells against progressive damage. We also need to make smart decisions about the foods we put in our body in order to keep those nutrients that are essential available so that our bodies can repair themselves. Your body truly is a miracle – think of it like a house that paints itself automatically when needed, and repairs its own roof it is leaks! {"title":"Is Coenzyme Q10 Effective in Reducing Statin-Induced Myalgias","authors":"K. Scheib","doi":"10.5580/eef","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5580/eef","url":null,"abstract":"Hyperlipidemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular events such as acute myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease, and stroke. High cholesterol is prevalent in 20-25% of the adult population (1). For some individuals, life style changes such as diet and exercise are not enough to lower cholesterol to acceptable levels. For these individuals pharmacological treatment, such as statin therapy, is necessary. According to the American Heart Association, 106.7 million Americans over the age of 20 have high cholesterol and of those, it is estimated that 11 to 25 million are on statin therapy (1). Myalgias, or muscle aches, are a relatively common symptom of statin therapy and can be significant enough to cause cessation of treatment. Post -marketing studies show a 13.6% incidence of statin-induced myalgias (2). Research is being done to find ways to reduce the myalgias so individuals can remain on statins and therefore reduce their risk of cardiovascular events. On promising treatment option for statin-induced myalgias is the use of coenzyme q10.The question this paper asks is whether coenzyme q10 is effective in reducing statininduced myalgias. This question is relevant because proper treatment would decrease the number of patients stopping statin therapy, therefore decreasing the risk of cardiovascular events in a large portion of the American population. This paper will critically examine two randomized studies, each with different outcomes, to help determine if the use of coenzyme q10 is effective in reducing statin-induced myalgias.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128160016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The seeds were prepared for use by removing the endocarp, sun-drying for five days and milled to flour. A soxhlet extraction was used for the extraction of the oil and the solvent used was hexane . The oil was recovered by simple distillation. The residual oil obtained was investigated for physicochemical parameters and fatty acid composition. The result shows that : moisture content (0.300± 0.01%), specific gravity (0.948± 0.02), refractive index @30C (1.792± 0.01) ,fire point (256.000± 1.20C), flash point (225.000 ± 2.10 C), smoke point (215.000 ± 1.00 C), viscosity @ 28 C (0.425 ± 0.12), pH (5.800 ± 0.00), congealing temperature (-18.000 ± 1.50 C), turbidity (5.000 ± 1.00 C). Others were free fatty acid (7.400 ±0.07% oleic acid), acid value (14.800± 0.14 % oleic acid), saponification value (178.000± 0.42mgKOH/g oil), peroxide value (158.640 ± 2.20Meq/Kg), iodine value (58.390 ± 0.71wijs), The crude oil sample was determined according to AOAC,(1984), They are within acceptable standard. The yield of 48% makes the commercialisation of the seed in Nigeria possible and profitable. Also, the result of the analysis confirms the oil to be of good quality and can find application in food industry as food additives as well as industrial purposes.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121632671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A large number of natural or synthetic food additives have been removed from both national and international lists of permitted food additives because of their mutagenic or carcinogenic activity. To the majority of the food additives, JECFA/FAO has assignedAdmissible Daily Intake Dose -ADI, which are often temporary and emphasized the need for further genotoxic evaluation, since a number of them are reported to be genotoxic below the ADI dose. In India, the problem is severe because in spite of regulation and restrictions by the prevention of Food Adulteration Act of 1954, use of non-permitted food additives are prevalent. In the present study, the mutagenic effects of sweeteners, saccharin (sweetex) and aspartame (sugar free) and flavouring agents such as vanilla essence, soy sauce, chilly sauce, worcestershire sauce, ice cream essence and rose syrup were tested utilizing Ames Salmonella microsome assay. Salmonella typhimurium strains such as TA 98 and TA 100, with and without metabolic activation were used. The results showed that all the food additives were found to be mutagenic except vanilla essence and ice cream essence.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116532200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of its high fiber content, plum juice may also improve bowel function, as well as have the potential to reduce appetite and excess body weight via an effect on satiety. This controlled study evaluated the effects of consuming a daily portion of plum juice (PlumSmart) prior to a meal for 14 days in 36 adults reporting chronic constipation symptoms, compared with a non-fruit source of fiber, psyllium (Metamucil) and equicaloric, fiber-free clear apple juice (placebo control). The main findings were 1) that softer stools were associated with plum juice compared to apple juice alone and apple juice with Metamucil 2) plum juice was as likely as psyllium to provide immediate relief (within 24 hours of first use) of constipation symptoms, and both performed better than the placebo (apple juice alone), and 3) the taste of plum juice was equal to apple juice alone, and was preferred over apple juice with psyllium. This study provides preliminary evidence to support the daily use of natural product, plum juice, as an accepted and effective treatment for stool softening and immediate relief of constipation symptoms. Actinomycetes broth was added to the finely grinded specific amount of coccopods. Onions were planted in this mixture to check the difference in growth rate along with control plants in normal soil. The amount of potassium released and utilized by the plants is estimated using dry weight analysis of plant material and also by flame photometer. Socioeconomic data, pregnancy related information, 24 hour dietary recall and information regarding the frequency of consumption of iron, folic acid, carotene and vitamin B12 rich foods was collected. Results indicated a low positive correlation between the mean dietary iron (r = 0.012, r = 0.158, p<.05) of the subjects and folic acid intake (r = 0.175, r = 0.022 p<.05) of the subjects and respective mean birth weights of infants among both GMH and PMC groups. Carotene had a low positive correlation (r = 0.021 p<.05,) with birth weight among the GMH subjects but low negative correlation (r = 0.227, p<.05) amongst the PMC group. Vitamin B12 intake and mean birth weight in the PMC group subjects showed a low positive correlation (r = 0.364, p<.05) while a low positive correlation ( r = 0.021 p<.05,) was observed in the GMH group. Multivariate analysis reflected an interrelationship between the socioeconomic status, pregnancy associated and dietary factors. The study concluded that a positive relation exists between the micronutrient intake of pregnant women and the birth weight of the infant.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120957548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
