The seeds was prepared, dried, dehulled, conditioned and flaked. The oil was extracted by solvent extraction. The oil sample was investigated for their physico-chemical parameters which were specific gravity, refractive index, colour, flash, fire smoke, soft and turbidity points. There values were 0.923± 0.016, 1.475±0.002, 18.00 units,339.00±2.20C, 342±1.20C, 235.00±1.75C, 42.00±1.108.00±0.20, 42.00±1.10, respectively. Other were free fatty acid, acid value, saponification value, peroxide value iodine value and yield, the values were 1.40±0.007%, 3.09±0.24%,197.43±0.42mgKOH/goil,12.6±2.20Meq02/kg, 131.60±0.71WIJ, 41.3±2.12% respectively. The qualitative determination of the fatty acid composition was carried out by methylation and application of Gas chromatography. The percentage yield which was 41.3% makes it a good source of oil. The free fatty acid (1.40%), peroxide (12.6meg KOH goil/ ), confirm that the oil can be processed into edible vegetable oil. The high level of unsaturated fatty acids (linoleic and oleic acids) and low level of saturated fatty acids(Myristic, palmitic and stearic acids) makes the oil a liquid oil. Finally, the oil, if refined and consumed, it will be a good source of essential fatty acid needed in the body.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133527716","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many plants have been reported to show hepatoprotective activities. This study was to determine the protective potential of fresh garlic extract on acetaminophen toxicity and to demonstrate its dose dependence. Sixty Swiss mice were divided into six groups of ten. Group I served as negative control and were treated with physiological saline. Group II served as the positive control and received 250 mg/kg body weight of acetaminophen only. Groups III, IV, and V were pretreated with daily administration of 250 mg/kg, 500 mg/kg, and 750 mg/kg of garlic respectively, for five days followed by 250 mg/kg of acetaminophen. Group VI were pretreated with 25 mg/kg silymarin prior to 250 mg/kg acetaminophen. Blood samples were collected after six hours of acetaminophen and used for biochemical studies, while liver was excised from each mouse and used to prepare hematoxylin / eosin sections. The alterations in AST, ALT, alkaline phosphatase, and serum albumin were significantly prevented by prior administration of garlic extract. Also the histological changes induced by acetaminophen overdose were prevented by garlic. We conclude that fresh garlic extract protected the liver against toxic doses of acetaminophen and suggest that its use could protect against hepatitis.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121453000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The slight astringent, bitter taste of green tea is attributed to polyphenols. A group of flavonoids in green tea are known as catechins, which are quickly absorbed into the body and are thought to contribute to some of the potential health benefits of tea. The fresh tea leaves contain four major catechins as colourless water soluble compounds. epicatechin (EC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), epigallocatechin (EGC) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). In this study we seen the antigenotoxic effect of tea polyphenol Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), against genotoxic damage induced by a steroid Trenbolone and an anticancer drug Docetaxel in cultured human lymphocytes, both in absence and presence of metabolic activation.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126302154","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In both groups, diet and pharmacologic therapy didn’t change in the two periods except for the supplement intake. The first group had a lower dosage of supplement intake, the second group had a higher dosage. We considered as control the period of time before the supplementary intake.Results and discussion In both groups, the average number of evacuation per day increased with the intake (p<,05) and the usage of the enemas didn’t change (p>0,05). Obtained results suggest that the lower dosage could be eligible for patients with light and temporary variation of the intestinal functionality while the higher dosage can be considered appropriate for patients with a significant alteration.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121918403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effect of processing methods on the mineral and phytochemical contact in leaves of Talinum triagulare was studies to determine which of the methods will minimize nutrient loss. Talinum triagulare was researched using different methods; sun drying, steam blanching and combination of these methods for its mineral and phytochemical content. The mineral analyzed were magnesium, potassium, sodium, calcium and iron while the phytochemicals were saponin, oxalate, alkaloid, tannin and phytate. The results showed that sundried sample produces more value of the mineral content over steam blanched and the combined methods sample which means that sundrying method was the best. The phytochemical analysis showed that in sun dried samples, saponin was 2.200 (mg/g), phytate has 0.434 (mg/g) while in steam blanched sample alkaloid has the highest value of 5.200 (mg/g) oxalate has 3.600 (mg/g). Written and informed consent to participate in this study was obtained from 80 type 2 diabetic patients. 50 randomly selected type 2 diabetic patients were supplemented with vitamin E capsule orally (1000 i.u / day ) and 30 age-matched patients to placebo for 2 months. Fasting blood was collected from each patient before and after vitamin E or placebo supplementation. Levels of Reduced glutathione (GSH ) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined. Hyperglycemia correlated with reduced blood GSH and increased malondialdehyde levels in type 2 diabetes. Vitamin E supplementation significantly increased GSH levels ( P<0.05 ) and lowered MDA levels ( p<0.05 ) which are markers of oxidative stress and this may reduce the risk of microvascular and macrovascular complications associated with diabetes mellitus.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132915226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
