Despite its many advantages, it is not devoid of side effects. As many studies have evidenced thus far, metformin treatment may increase the risk of vitamin B12 deficiency, with the prevalence of this deficiency varying from 1.8% to 53.2%. We performed a review of studies to summarize their results and present dose and duration associations between metformin therapy and serum cobalamin levels. Aim of the study: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between metformin and vitamin B12 deficiency from a historical perspective.Material and Methods: Thirty articles focused on vitamin B12 deficiency during metformin therapy, collected from the PubMed database from 1971 to July 2021, were analyzed.Results: Based on the literature reviewed, we observed a prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency with metformin use ranging from 1.8% to 53.2%, with a median of 11.2%. In studies with follow-up longer than six months, the incidence of vitamin B12 deficiency during metformin treatment was approximately 6–10%. The vast majority of studies showed an inverse correlation between dose and length of metformin intake and serum vitamin B12 levels. The findings of three out of 16 analyzed studies proved dose-only associations, and the other three showed time-only effects. Two studies found no relationship with these variables.Conclusions: Patients undergoing long-term metformin therapy, especially at high doses, should have their vitamin B12 levels measured regularly to protect them from complications resulting from cobalamin deficiency.","PeriodicalId":32604,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Pulse","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47101549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Poland, the legitimacy and acceptability of in vitro fertilization (IVF) are still debated in the public and political realms, with NaProTechnology being the recommended publicly funded method of infertility treatment. Aim of the study: This paper presents the current perceptions and opinions of Polish women of reproductive age on infertility treatment, with particular reference to IVF. Material and methods: The study used an original questionnaire to survey 226 women aged 18-49 on their knowledge and attitudes toward IVF. Results: A high level of knowledge concerning IVF as a method of infertility treatment was demonstrated by 19.9% of respondents. Most women interviewed (65%) had a positive attitude toward IVF, 4.6% would use IVF regardless of the cost, and 12.4% would never use IVF. Only 5.8% of respondents thought that access to infertility treatment is guaranteed in Poland. Conclusions: This is the first study conducted in Poland in which participants professed that their Catholic faith did not influence their lack of acceptance of IVF. Most respondents held the opinion that access to infertility treatment is not guaranteed in Poland. Given the increasing scale of the infertility problem, detailed monitoring of attitudes and acceptance of IVF is needed to support those in Poland struggling with the condition.","PeriodicalId":32604,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Pulse","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45389580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The growing problem of lipid disorders, hypertension, and overweight among young people may lead to dangerous cardiovascular disease-related consequences. Aim of the study: Assess the prevalence of selected cardiovascular disease risk factors among medical students. Material and methods: The study included 201 medical students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Technology and Humanities (UTH) in Radom. A diagnostic proprietary survey method collected heart rate, blood pressure, and body composition data using a TANITA device. The results were analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Shapiro-Wilk test using R statistical software, while the post hoc analysis employed t-tests with Bonferonis correction. Results: Heart rate and blood pressure were within normal limits in most subjects. Low physical activity and increased fat mass were confirmed in the students with a higher metabolic than metric age. Furthermore, nursing students had higher mean fat mass and lower mean basal metabolism values than students of other majors, especially medicine. Conclusions: The health-promoting aspects of behaviors favoring a healthy body weight and sleep hygiene, as well as not smoking and having low alcohol consumption, were observed in the study group. However, some lifestyle elements, including eating habits, must be modified.","PeriodicalId":32604,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Pulse","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45552104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It affects men of all ages, and the incidence increases with age. Due to the location of the prostate in the lower urinary tract area, changes within it can impair urinary function. Early intervention, accurate diagnostics, and appropriate treatment are thus important, especially including conservative methods in the first stage. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to use and to evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic massage in benign prostatic hyperplasia.Case report: A course of therapeutic massage was given to a 55-year-old patient diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia. The therapy lasted three weeks, with the procedure being performed twice a week. Each massage lasted twenty minutes and involved manipulation of the lining of the stomach. The patient underwent imaging tests before and after the therapy. On the International Prostate Symptom Score scale, the patient scored 3 points before the therapy and 2 points after it. These results indicate mild symptoms. The level of prostate specific antigen was 1.421 ng/ml. The patient had normal results of uroflowmetry [Qmax 19 ml/s, Qmedium 12 ml/s] both before and after treatment. The urine retention after micturition at both intervals was assessed at about 0 ml. Transrectal ultrasound examination revealed a reduction in prostate volume by about 30% after the therapeutic intervention. Conclusions: The positive effect obtained after therapeutic intervention in the form of the reduced prostate volume in this case shows that massage can serve as a complementary method to reduce BPH symptoms. In the future, it is advisable to continue testing on more patients.","PeriodicalId":32604,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Pulse","volume":"44 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41244346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently, no treatment is available to slow down or reverse disease progression. The need to find new solutions has prompted research interest in gene therapy. Aim of the study: The purpose of this review is to analyze a selection of completed clinical trials on gene therapy in PD and their possible implementation in treatment. Material and Methods: Clinical trials were selected from the ClinicalTrials.gov database using the following search criteria: Parkinsons disease, gene therapy, and completed status. Trials that were ongoing, terminated, preclinical, or with different research subjects were excluded. PubMed and Google Scholar databases were also searched for neuropathology, symptoms, and treatment recommendations for PD. The results of reviewed clinical trials have been checked in terms of the efficacy and safety of the investigated therapies in the treatment of PD. Results: We analyzed 7 completed clinical trials, namely VY-AADC01 (NCT01973543), AAV-GAD (NCT00195143), ProSavin (NCT00627588), AAV2-GDNF (NCT01621581), CERE-120 (NCT00252850), VY-AADC01 (NCT03065192), and CERE-120 (NCT00985517) with a total of 152 patients. Five of the studies had published results and four of these five had satisfactory results. VY-AADC01, AAV-GAD, and CERE-120 were found to be safe and potentially effective in the treatment of PD, while ProSavin demonstrated insufficient effectiveness. Conclusions: There is limited available data regarding completed clinical trials for PD gene therapy, with a small number of patients, making it difficult to give a final statement on the possibility of using gene therapy to treat PD. However, the clinical trials reviewed herein show promising results with the potential to revolutionize the treatment of PD.","PeriodicalId":32604,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Pulse","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48377807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Life satisfaction is related to physical and mental health and is an important component of human functioning. Nurses are particularly vulnerable to negative emotions due to their high-risk occupation and contact with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-infected individuals. Aim of the study: The main objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between life satisfaction and levels of anxiety, depression, and aggression among nurses working with patients infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional observational study interviewed 110 individuals employed in two medical institutions in Opole and Lower Silesia Voivodeships between September and December 2021. Interviews were conducted using two standardized questionnaires, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Modified Version (HADS-M) and the Satisfaction with Life Survey (SWLS). Results: Analysis revealed that 26.3% (n = 29) of nurses working with SARS-CoV-2-infected patients had marked anxiety symptoms, whereas 5.5% (n = 6) of respondents had depressive disorders. There was no association between age and levels of anxiety (p = 0.153) or depression (p = 0.867), although the workplace had a significant effect on the severity of anxiety (p < 0.001) and depressive symptoms (p = 0.019). Most respondents (66.4%, n = 73) described their life satisfaction as average. However, borderline depressive symptoms significantly impacted levels of perceived life satisfaction (p = 0.031). Conclusions: Nurses working in coronavirus disease (COVID) wards were more likely to show anxiety symptoms than signs of depression, while borderline depressive symptoms were more prevalent in those with low life satisfaction. Age and marital status did not affect the severity of anxiety or depression among respondents. These findings provide the basis for a deeper exploration of the issues and highlight the increasing need for more professional support.","PeriodicalId":32604,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Pulse","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47328668","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and methods: The study included a group of 171 registered nurses from Poland. Using the author's non-standardized questionnaire, the study examined the professional experience and usefulness of PE in the nursing profession. Results: Most nurses (56.3%) perform PE every day, regardless of seniority. The main reason for not performing PE was lack of time due to other nursing activities (32.7%) and insufficient staffing (29.9%). Some nurses also explained that it was due to the reluctance of medical personnel (24.1%). The most commonly used techniques in PE were inspection (44.1%) and palpation (32.8%). Most nurses (54.5%), regardless of seniority, felt satisfied with their PE performance. In the opinion of the respondents, 68.3% of patients approached PE undertaken by nurses with trust and appreciation, regardless of their seniority. Conclusions: Professional experience did not significantly affect the perception and performance of PE by nurses in professional practice.
