A good artist aims at making their texts original and unique, often transcending the limitations of artistic conventions and imagination of their times. A good researcher aims at discovering general patterns and mechanisms that transcend the idiosyncrasies of particular authors’ style. For this reason, the efforts of artists and scholars usually pull in opposite directions. Michał Szawerna’s Metaphoricity of Conventionalized Diegetic Images in Comics, an ambitious project aiming at capturing the semiotic complexities of the relatively young but incredibly rich art of comics, is no exception in this respect. Even though the wealth of comics creators’ artistic imagination tends to escape from elegant categories devised by a theorist, the theorist can nonetheless reveal much not only about artist’s imagination but also about the cognitive mechanisms of the sign-using mind. Michał Szawerna is certainly not the first one to undertake the task of offering a semiotic characterization of the comics medium; French and American scholars have been proposing various theoretical frameworks with this aim in mind for several decades. Nonetheless, Szawerna is probably the first to make such an extensive use of the tools devised in the field of cognitive semiotic and the first one to propose such a wide range of in-depth case studies. When pronunciation instruction is executed, anything that conspicuously departs from spelling pronunciation is accepted. It appears that teachers implicitly and largely unconsciously follow the idea of the somewhat impoverished instructional model of English as a Lingua Franca ELF put forward by Jenkins 2000. Until recently, no reasonable, well-argued-for alternative was available, whereas now the model suggested in Szpyra-Kozłowska 2015: Native English as Lingua Franca NELF fulfils the needs of both students in English departments as well as ordinary users of English. This paper reports on the preferences as to the desirable standard in pronunciation instruction among students in academia — but not among those of English language departments — as learners of English as a Foreign Language for whom language proficiency may be an important professional asset in their future careers. To investigate the above, a research survey of the quantitative-qualitative type was implemented in the form of a questionnaire. The focus is not so much on the numerical favourites as on the reasons behind a stated preference. Polish regiolects may constitute a significant barrier to interlingual transfer. The problems with non-standard varieties of a language, which are frequently incomprehensible even to native speakers of their standard counterparts, can be overcome by means of, inter alia, explanatory periphrastic substitution added to the translated text. In the method of subtitling examined in this research, however, a translation of this kind is nearly impossible due to the broadly defined aesthetics of film e.g. time and space constraints frequently applied to the mode of AVT. Therefore, this article examines the hypothesis of dual constraint, which assumes a two-fold hindrance to a successful AV dialect transfer i.e. the lack of equivalents in the target language and the aforementioned aesthetic requirements of film. The corpus of the material researched here is based on the English subtitles for the screen adaptation of Chłopi — a Nobel Prize-winning novel written by Władysław Stanisław Reymont The Peasants; PolArt Video 2006. This article provides the theoretical background for the subsequent study as well as introduces its own classification of the translation techniques applicable to this particular piece of research as well as to other AV dialect transfers. The research part focuses on the research proper. Inspired by the international and interdisciplinary conference on “Transgender and Intersex in the Arts, Science and Society” that was held in 2012 in Dresden and that gathered researchers, activists, and artists working in transgender and intersex studies, the collection aims at mapping potential alliances between intersex and transgender positions, while acknowledging that the interests of transgender and intersex communities and researchers may be conflicting, if not at times contradictory. The volume adopts a non-hierarchical, multiperspectival, and interdisciplinary approach to examine a variety of issues related to gender variance and politics of recognition. Accordingly, the articles focus on those processes and texts that have played major roles in deconstructing and reconstructing gender identities during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, and present analyses of legal and sociopolitical issues, theoretical perspectives and dilemmas, and literary and visual representations. The purpose of this article is to present the results of a similar survey, which examines the reading lists of British and Irish literature courses offered in the English departments of chosen Polish universities in Warsaw, Gdańsk, Toruń, Poznań, Łódź, Lublin, Wrocław, Opole and Kraków. A discussion of the results — most commonly taught writers and texts — is accompanied by an analysis based on an online survey of the lecturers’ motivations behind including certain texts and omitting others. I will argue that whereas the teaching canon of modernist texts appears fixed all the reading lists include works by James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, William Butler Yeats and T.S. Eliot, the canon of post-war and contemporary literature is yet to emerge. I shall also assert the appearance of the so called “canon lag” and review the selection criteria for the inclusion of canonical texts. The article concludes with a consideration of the texts that appear most likely to join the curricular canons at Polish universities in the near future. They are plays in which the concept of tragedy is portrayed through the eyes of noble people. They are plays in which Rotimi places an emphasis on the nobility of birth of the protagonists. His later plays, however, put an emphasis on the proletariat. This article examines the Marxist aesthetics and ideology in Ola Rotimi’s If: A Tragedy of the Ruled 1983 and Hopes of the Living Dead 1988. It reflects on Rotimi’s ideological departure into revolutionary drama in his later plays compared to such earlier plays as The Gods Are Not To Blame 1979, Kurunmi 1971 and Ovonranwem Nogbaisi 1974. The study shows that Rotimi stresses the importance of the proletariat in society as reflected in If: A Tragedy of the Ruled 1983 and Hopes of the Living Dead 1988. The paper argues that Rotimi’s acceptance of a new vision of commitment as revealed in the plays is an act of intellectual decolonisation. In Hobongan, there are many terms for measurements, usually some form of estimation. Hobongan has a four-based counting system, and those forms are used to estimate one is one or hardly any, and four is quite a lot and function as articles in sentences. Hobongan has also borrowed more counting terms and has the lexical items necessary for precise quantification, but those quantifications are used primarily within certain domains, such as determining what they should be paid for gold that has been mined or what should be paid in fines after legal judgments. Estimates of measurements can reference common objects, such as segments of bamboo or the height of a standing human. Perhaps the richest aspect of the system is that of measurement, in which terms that provide ways to estimate temperatures, magnitudes, and other amounts can indicate the ways in which the Hobongan make estimates from contextual information and apply the terms in use. In Hobongan, measurements in the form of estimates are primary and obligatory.
