This converter has the following features: natural power factor correction with the fast regulation, soft switching, HF transformer isolation with the resonant tank operating in above resonance mode, etc. A new gating control scheme is used for simultaneous control of boost converter and the PRC. Modes of operation are presented and analyzed. Based on the analysis, design curves are obtained. An optimum design is given and a design example is presented. {"title":"Simulation of shaft vibrations due to interaction between turbine-generator train and power electronic converters at the Visund oil platform","authors":"M. Hernes, B. Gustavsen","doi":"10.1109/PCC.2002.998175","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/PCC.2002.998175","url":null,"abstract":"The Norwegian company Norsk Hydro AS has frequently experienced severe vibration problems within the power generator trains at some of their oil platforms in the North Sea. Initially, these problems were believed to have a pure mechanical nature. The generator shaft was therefore modified to increase its inherent damping, but this only partly solved the problem. The focus was eventually directed to possible sources for the problems within the electrical power grid, especially two 7 MW variable speed drives (VSD) that serve as compressor drives. These drives are designed as current source converters (CSC), which feed synchronous motors. In order to clarify whether the vibration problems were caused by interaction between the VSDs and the generator train it was decided to carry out a detailed analysis using the simulation tool PSCAD/EMTDC. The simulated system includes a fully detailed model of the two 7 MW compressor drives and the turbine-generator train, as well as other relevant parts of the electrical system. The simulation results show that the VSDs can cause excessive vibration levels by two different phenomena: interharmonics and negative damping. It is verified that the redesigned shaft gives a lower vibration level, and that the resulting vibration level becomes reduced in the presence of passive electrical loads. The results and the simulation model are subject to further analysis in order to find permanent corrective actions to the problems, e.g. by means of dedicated power electronic devices.","PeriodicalId":320424,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Power Conversion Conference-Osaka 2002 (Cat. In the proposed converter, the power factor and line current distortion are improved by using the third winding of the energy-storage reactor of buck-boost converter, and the high power efficiency is achieved by the soft-switching operations of the main power switch and output rectifier diode. As a result, it is clarified that the proposed circuit satisfies the IEC 61000-3-2 Class-D against changes of load. The maximum power factor is 0.83, minimum THD is 68% and maximum power efficiency is 92% at rated condition. When the wheels of the train slip on the rails, the torque is decreased to avoid the continuous slipping. The reason is that the tractive coefficient between the wheels and the rails has a peak at a certain slip velocity. But this adhesive phenomenon is not clearly examined or analyzed. Thus we have developed a new adhesion test equipment. In this paper, we measured the tractive force with this equipment, and clarified the adhesive phenomenon. However, it has the disadvantage that the motor is noisy because of the deformation by the radial force. This paper examines the radial force for various SRMs with a hole inside the pole using the two dimensional finite element method, and for typical models, the acoustic noise and efficiency are evaluated by the experiments. A three-point median filter is utilized to remove the impulsive noise that appears during the transient process. Simulations show that an optimal transient performance can be achieved using the proposed technique under unbalanced situations. From the Laplace transform of the stator voltage vector we can also derive Fourier analysis to predict the voltage harmonic spectrum. The main drawbacks of SRMs are large torque ripple and acoustic noise. The torque ripple can be reduced by the stator current waveform shaping. This paper gives ideal stator current waveforms for the flat instantaneous torque. The new SRM drive circuit is proposed to synthesize the actual stator current as close as possible to the ideal ones in waveforms. We construct the speed control system with efficiency optimization applied on optimal regulator theory. The proposed technique takes into consideration the change in amplitude of the harmonics during the observation. By applying it to harmonics analysis, we can analyze the harmonics from not only the frequency but also the time point of view. Therefore, it enables us to obtain the effective solution for harmonics problems. In this paper, a wavelet transform is carried out against the actual measured data.
