The results of the research show that China has the most\u0000 ambitious approach and pretension to take a leading position in a large\u0000 number of high-tech industries. Since 2014, China has become the\u0000 second-largest industrial power, right after Germany, while the US has been\u0000 in fourth place since 2017. China leads in terms of the share of industrial\u0000 products in global trade and the share of manufacturing value added in the\u0000 total world gross domestic product. Since 2015, China and Germany have\u0000 developed intensive cooperation in the area of hi-tech industrial\u0000 production, while bilateral relations between China and the US are tight due\u0000 to the trade war. The focus of the analysis is\u0000 on the so-called ?Jodoverse? - a segment of Jodorowsky?s opus which includes\u0000 three great science-fiction sagas - ?The Incal?, ?The Saga of the\u0000 Metabarons? and ?Technopriests?. These works, which can be defined as ?space\u0000 operas? in terms of genre, vividly evoke a futuristic vision of one of the\u0000 possible cosmic futures of humanity. This paper aims to map those motives in\u0000 this fictional universe that draw inspiration from the tradition of\u0000 classical geopolitics, i.e., the practice of political realism. The author?s\u0000 initial assumption is that the Jodoverse is designed to function as a\u0000 (popular-cultural) reflection of earthly geopolitical principles in the\u0000 mirror of outer space and that, therefore, the depiction of astropolitics in\u0000 the works of Jodorowsky is nothing but cloning of realpolitik in infinite\u0000 space above the earth?s orbit. In order to confirm this assumption, the\u0000 author will use the geopolitical and astropolitical concepts of Karl Schmidt\u0000 and Everett Dolman as a key to unravelling the secrets of the Jodoverse. For\u0000 that purpose, Schmidt?s concept of the nomos of the earth will be used, as\u0000 well as the teaching on technological determinism which is present in the\u0000 works of both theorists. This is a consequence of the\u0000 overwhelming presence and dominance of the United States over the past\u0000 decades on the international stage. One particularly interesting aspect of\u0000 the US foreign policy is its relation with the United Nations. As one of the\u0000 founders and most influential members of the United Nations, the United\u0000 States? position is under a lot of scrutiny as it represents one of the main\u0000 drivers of the UN policy. In this article, the author will investigate how\u0000 the first year and a half of the Biden administration influenced US-UN\u0000 relations. A special place will be given to the Trump administration?s\u0000 approach to the UN-US relation, but a historical context will also be given.\u0000 The methodology used for data collection focused on US and UN documents and\u0000 resolutions, as well as the most relevant and current international and\u0000 national authors, that focused on particular elements relevant to the\u0000 research. This kind of analysis requires a historical approach to legal\u0000 research, which was utilized for comparative analysis in this article. {"title":"Religion and war - the return of the written-off","authors":"Milan Subotić","doi":"10.2298/medjp1904476s","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2298/medjp1904476s","url":null,"abstract":"Famous German sociologist and philosopher, Jurgen Habermas, often points out\u0000 that we not only live in postmodern but in ?post-secular society? as well.\u0000 This post-secular society appears as a significant opposite to the society\u0000 which we heard about several decades ago, and which was mostly secular or\u0000 striving towards secularity. Almost all of the 20th century, and especially\u0000 decades after World War II, was marked with stands that religion and the\u0000 Holy are losing its significance in contemporary society. However, at the\u0000 end of the 20th and especially at the beginning of the turbulent 21st\u0000 century, we are witnessing the fact that religion is not defeated. More\u0000 precisely, it did not lose its place both in private and public life. It is\u0000 obvious that religion was ?under the radar? for different anticipators from\u0000 the 20th century, which proved that it is still a complex social phenomenon\u0000 that cannot be easily explained nor predicted. How did religion come back\u0000 from ?nonsense? to the main stage of important contemporary social\u0000 phenomena? What are the potentials of religion in causing, and what in the\u0000 pacification of conflicts? What are the characteristics of religion-inspired\u0000 conflicts, then and now? How contemporary monotheisms see the (just) war?\u0000 These are some of the questions we tried to answer in this paper through the\u0000 review of contemporary literature and content analysis. The author\u0000 simultaneously analysed if numbers about the increase of believers in the\u0000 world (absolute) and numbers in the percentage of faithful ones (relative)\u0000 are valid indicators that religion returned in the context of former\u0000 importance. However, the initial\u0000 enthusiasm that followed has melted over the coming years because the\u0000 expectations of most countries in the region have not been met (with the\u0000 exception of Croatia that became an EU member in 2013). Even though we get\u0000 assurances from the Brussels that they will not give up on enlargement, it is\u0000 obvious that this issue is not on the list of priorities of the EU at the\u0000 moment. Not only that its decisiveness to encompass with enlargement the\u0000 Western Balkans is on shaky grounds due to the numerous challenges that the\u0000 EU is facing at the moment, but such decline in interest leads to a decline\u0000 in interest in the countries of the mentioned region that are currently in\u0000 the accession process. This further leads to the rise in Euroscepticism for\u0000 which the Western Balkans is a breeding ground. The reasons for\u0000 Euroscepticism existed even before the enlargement has been brushed aside\u0000 from the Union agenda (those were mostly reasons related to pre-accession\u0000 strategy for candidate countries/potential candidates and were present even\u0000 in the case of countries of Eastern and Central Europe, even though there\u0000 were also reasons specific for each of these countries.). However, it seems\u0000 they have become stronger with the new developments in the Union. Incertitude\u0000 of membership affects the rise of negative attitudes towards the Union in the\u0000 public opinion of these countries which becomes manifest if we look at\u0000 numerous public opinion polls. {"title":"Astropolitics: Yes, that is really a thing","authors":"Bohumil Doboš","doi":"10.2298/medjp2001236d","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2298/medjp2001236d","url":null,"abstract":"The paper reviews the main approaches towards the study of the geopolitics\u0000 of outer space and presents some main issues to be tackled in the future.\u0000 Geopolitics, as an approach towards the analysis of international politics,\u0000 generally discusses the impact of geography on the political processes.\u0000 Throughout history, approaches to analyse the impact of different types of\u0000 terrain or different types of environment (sea, air, land) on the conduct of\u0000 political activity were developed. It was only in the 1990s when Everett\u0000 Dolman applied the geopolitical approach to the outer space domain. Since\u0000 then, many approaches to the issue were developed, and the stream known as\u0000 astropolitics became an important stream of academic thought. The author\u0000 analyses some physical characteristics necessary for the understanding of\u0000 the domain's mechanisms and then presents some important streams of thought\u0000 inside the geopolitical thinking. The analysis focuses on the issues of\u0000 actorness, the relations between space powers, technological progress, the\u0000 introduction of space weapons, utilisation of natural resources, and\u0000 sustainability of space operations. Great\u0000 Britain shared similar concerns with the rise of Germany at the beginning of\u0000 the 20th century. Power relations among states in East Asia, during last two\u0000 decades, share many similarities with those of pre-World War I Europe. This\u0000 historical analogy provides abundant information regarding the behavior of\u0000 land and maritime states. On the other hand, the analogy is often used\u0000 without reference to other great powers in the system and how these states\u0000 influenced the overall balance of power. In other words, we get the notion\u0000 that the conflict between land and maritime power is inevitable regardless\u0000 of other actors and their position in the system. In our work we shall focus\u0000 our attention on the two processes that are balance of power and balance of\u0000 threat; and try to understand how these mechanisms affected the politics of\u0000 key actors in Europe before the Great War and how they affect the politics\u0000 of contemporary states in East Asia. The notion of humanitarian intervention\u0000 has its place in his famous book De Iure Belli ac Pacis. The only correct\u0000 way to investigate the emergence of the humanitarian intervention as an idea\u0000 in this masterpiece of international law is through the analysis set in an\u0000 appropriate time context, with particular attention devoted to the life and\u0000 work of Hugo Grotius - the approach that will be taken by the author.\u0000 Special reference will be given to the progressive ideas of Hugo Grotius in\u0000 De Iure Belli ac Pacis in the context of the politics of colonization of the\u0000 Dutch in XVII century. Finally, this paper will demonstrate that Hugo\u0000 Grotius? book cannot be considered without accepting its utilitaristic\u0000 dimension and especially not as a work devoted only to the goals of his\u0000 state. After the Biden administration?s failure to ?structure? this\u0000 confrontation during the phase one of the new Ukrainian crisis in 2021,\u0000 Washington replaced this approach towards Russia with a new one -\u0000 ?containment 2.0.?, resembling the one from the Cold War. From neoclassical\u0000 realist point of view, the author analyzes why the U.S. and Russia have come\u0000 to this point, and are there prospects of taming their confrontation in the\u0000 future. The conclusion is that responsibility for this new situation can be\u0000 found on both sides (in their dominant revisionist foreign policy ideas), as\u0000 well as in systemic factors? (power distribution and geopolitical posture)\u0000 impacts, but also in Ukraine?s role.
