This paper first discusses connotation of OBE, analyzes problems of English teaching in higher vocational colleges: disconnection between basic English and professional English, old-style teaching methods and outdated teaching contents. Then, it introduces ideas, objectives and contents of OBE English teaching reform in Jiangsu Maritime Institute. This paper first analyzed the concepts and characteristics of deep learning, and compared deep learning with surface learning. Secondly, according to the connotative characteristics of deep learning theory, the general process of deep learning was given. Finally, a deep learning activity design with four stages was proposed. The four stages constitute the cyclic chain of the deep learning process. However, errors are meaningfully constructed clues for literacy instructions as errors indicate much more than what learners fail to master in a grammatically accurate manner, but demonstrate diverse information like learners’ language schemes employed in acquiring certain language features. This paper elementally analyses causes of ESL learners’ errors from theoretical perspectives of Contrastive analysis, Error analysis and Interlanguage theory.
