How does it present refugees? Are forced or prohibited intercultural encounters in Germany dealt with in these literary works? In what kind of space is the plot taking place? Is the literary figure of a refugee more of a world citizen or a stateless person? What do the protagonists expect from Europe? What price are they willing to pay to get out of hell and reach the awaited European paradise or penetrate the walls of the fortress Europe? This paper deals with these questions through the analysis of the novels »Havarie« (Kröger 2015), »Gehen, ging, gegangen« (Erpenbeck 2015) and »Ohrfeige« (Khider 2016). The corpus is based on Nasrin Siege’s collection of African fairy tales under the title »Kalulu und andere afrikanische Märchen «. The contribution focusses on discrepancies noticeable in the above-mentioned collection of African literary texts at the linguistic and cultural level as well as in terms of literary genres. The main objective is to examine which different transfer procedures are observable in the process of the German literary text production, in terms of style und cultural values. This enables answering the central questions of how some analyzed texts are historically situated from an African perspective and geographically located in Africa. Furthermore, I investigate which cultural specificities (names and forms of address, but also ways of life etc.) related to African societies are transported through the process of the German literary production of the selected African fairy tales. The Jewish firstperson narrator was born in Galicia, but now lives in New York following his f light from Nazi Austria via France. Suf fering from dementia, he recalls his life, which has been informed by border crossings and homelessness as a result of the Holocaust. As I show in this article, the protagonist’s absurd narration – where dif ferent phases of his life comingle and overlap – represents a metaphor for the rootlessness of a traumatized life on the run. Polledri","doi":"10.14361/9783839450413-017","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14361/9783839450413-017","url":null,"abstract":"The present article is an attempt to understand Grillparzer’s »Medea« in the light of Hannah Arendt’s essay »We Refugees«. Written 1943 in english, Arendt’s article is of ten quoted as a paradigm for the understanding of the condition of refugees. Grillparzer’s character is considered in this regard as a literary representation of the human, social and political condition of refugees as well. The tragedy deals with the consequences of a society that refuses to recognize the identity of the stranger and to enter into a dialog with him. Medea’s departure to the temple of Delphi in the end of the drama is a symbol of the humanity and of the syncretism between greeks and barbarians showing the hope for a dialog between cultures and transforming the protagonist into a messenger of interculturality ante litteram.
