The textured image can be modeled to describe, analyze and synthesize the texture. The model parameters capture the essential perceived qualities of texture. One of the important characteristics of texture data is the statistical dependence of the gray level at a lattice point on those of its neighbors. The spatial-interaction models characterize this statistical dependency by representing the intensity of a pixel, as a 2-D linear combination of the intensity of its neighbors and an additive noise. One way of specifying this interaction is simultaneous autoregressive (SAR) models. This is one of the most traditional methods used for modeling in the area of image processing. This paper presents the work done by the authors on parameter estimation and synthesis of textured images using Simultaneous Autoregressive (SAR) modeling. Different programs are developed in MATLAB to implement the parameter estimation and synthesis and are tested for their performance. The scope of this work includes the use of causal and noncausal methods for modeling and synthesizing natural textures. Simultaneous or spatial autoregressive models with causal and noncausal neighborhoods are used for parameter estimation and texture pattern generation. Parameter estimation is done by two different methods: The least square error (LSE) and maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). LSE method is preferred for causal models. MLE method is used for noncausal autoregressive models and it uses iterative algorithm. The synthesis procedure is based on generating a two dimensional autoregressive random field driven by a two dimensional zero mean white noise field with unit variance. Two different algorithms are used for synthesis of causal and noncausal AR models. Different image textures are synthesized using a given set of neighborhoods and parameters. Different patterns of synthetic images can be generated using various sets of parameters. A number of images from Brodatz album are tested for parameter estimation and synthesis. The synthesized image retains the pattern in the original image like vertical or horizontal streaks. An interactive graphical user interface (GUI) is developed using MATLAB that allows user to select one image from Brodatz album. The user can choose between causal or noncausal neighborhood and select number of elements in the neighborhood or choose any one set of neighborhood from different sets stored, and find out SAR model parameters by one of the methods of parameter estimation. The user can synthesize the image using these parameters. Both original and synthesized image are displayed side by side on the screen and the user can easily compare the two images. Thus the GUI offers an interactive platform for implementation of parameter estimation using different n","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122066702","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A multi-layer error back-propagation (BP) feed-forward neural network model was proposed to predict an important geotechnical parameter, namely the consolidation coefficient. The conventional methods for predicting consolidation coefficient is briefly introduced. Based on the results of laboratory consolidation tests, the BP model was trained and used to determine the consolidation coefficient. The predicted values were compared to those determined by graphical methods. It is proved that the BP neural network approach yielded similar results compared with other methods.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"218 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115522497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The APF is aimed to compensate harmonic phase currents, harmonic neutral current, reactive and unbalanced nonlinear load currents in 4-wire distribution systems. In addition, the dc-link capacitor voltages are regulated and equalized to eliminate the imbalance problem which is due to the presence of dc component in the neutral wire current. The capacitor voltage imbalance is a major problem for conventional 4-wire split-capacitor topology as it degrades significantly the performance of the compensator. For the sake of the control, the multivariable state space model of the APF is developed in the synchronous dq0 frame. The model is used to obtain the desired closed loop dynamics and to select the converter switching states by applying a sliding mode control strategy. The control law has a switching component forcing the system's trajectory to the sliding surface and a continuous component valid on the sliding surface. The stability of the closed loop system is proved by means of Lyapunov stability criterion. The robustness over a wide range of operation is another property of the control. Simulations are conducted to verify the analytical analysis of the control.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126242886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each block, which is optimized to control a predefined channel wavelength, consists of three components. The wavelength blocking/transmitting and the equalizing actions are provided by the liquid-crystal cell (LCC) whose optical path difference varies between two particular values when its birefringence is electrically controlled. Preliminary experimental tests show that for a sample block which is optimized for a channel wavelength λ = 1.55 µ;m, the power transmissivity can readily be equalized. When the LCC is switched to be a half wave plate at λ (VLCC = 10V), then the channel wavelength λ is fully transmitted, whereas when the LCC is switched to have zero phase shift (VLCC = 42V), channel wavelength λ is then blocked. However, if the LCC is tuned to have an intermediate state, the λ-power transmissivity is equalized. The benefit of such a polarization-based WB/CE is that it operates without free space demultiplexing optics and with no moving parts. It can be used as a ROADM subsystem in CWDM or DWDM broadcast and select architectures.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125473470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are many factors contributing to shortcomings and errors in patient care in the intensive care setting, such as long working hours, high levels of stress, lack of enough people, may cause human errors and affecting the effectiveness of the decisions of the physician. Several attempts have been made to increase the effectiveness of such decisions by issuing early alerts on adverse patient conditions. However, such alerts are based on single parameter variations but not on the relationship between multiple parameter variations. Thus, inability to provide an effective communication model causes a considerable bottleneck in intensive care unit (ICU) operations. The proposed model is an integrated solution which identifies the adverse patient conditions on multiple parameter variations and then provides predictive treatment suggestions on those identified conditions. It follows an interactive communication cycle in order to properly notify the responsible physicians. Results show that the system is capable of early identification of adverse conditions and providing suitable treatment suggestions compared to physicians themselves make decisions on same patient conditions.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128395387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fault Tolerant Control methods are generally focused their attention to design a reconfigurable controller in order to reach the nominal closed-loop performances as close as possible. In the presence of such faults, the steady-state performance can be also degraded due to the physical actuator limits. However, only few contributions concern the reference (also called command) input adjustments to prevent the actuators from saturation. Inspired by [6], the main contribution is to consider the reconfigured system as an open loop controlled by a classical Model Predictive Control strategy in order to design “one-line” new reference input trajectories. The added value of this method is to reduce the energy spent to achieve desired closed-loop performance and consequently to maintain a reliable system in dynamical way. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated using a classical benchmark corrupted by abrupt actuator faults: the three-tank system.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129511193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
