{"title":"What Makes Teachers of EFL Professional or Unprofessional","authors":"M. Amin","doi":"10.17977/JPH.V2I4.4471","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.17977/JPH.V2I4.4471","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract : This study aimed to investigate factors attributable to English teacher professional becoming and how the factors have shaped their professionalism. The subjects of the study, called informants, were six English teachers from upper secondary level of education (Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) and Madrasah Aliyah (MA)) in three different regions in Indonesia: Malang, Mataram, and Lombok Barat. The research design was constructivist grounded theory. Findings of the study reveal that, prior to their teaching induction, early interests in English and high aptitude are two contributing factors. After the induction, their professional becoming is influenced by level of job satisfaction, commitment to their own and student learning, communication skills and resilience. Recommendations to obtain potential professional teachers of EFL and strategies to help them develop and maintain their professionalism are also discussed. Enam informan yang merupakan guru SekolahMenengah Atas (SMA) and Madrasah Aliyah (MA) di tiga daerah di Indonesia—Malang, Mataram dan Lombok Barat—menjadi subjek penelitian ini. Desain penelitian ini adalah teori grounded konstruktivis. Temuan penelitian ini adalah bahwa minat dan bakat yang kuat dalam Bahasa Inggris merupakan faktor yang berperan dalam pembentukan profesionalisme sebelum (seseorang) menempuh pendidikan guru. Setelah pendidikan guru ditempuh, profesionalisme dibentuk oleh tingkat kepuasan kerja, komitmen terhadap pembelajaran diri maupun siswa, keterampilan berkomunikasi dan kelenturan mengembalikan semangat (motivasi) bekerja yang turun atau hilang. {"title":"Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights In Indonesian Version: Lulu Wijaya’s Translation Strategies and Inappropriateness Explored","authors":"M. First, it is to examine the strategies used by Lulu Wijaya in translating Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. Second, it is to explore how inappropriate Lulu Wijaya’s translation of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights is. The research data were obtained from both the English and the Indonesian versions of the novel under discussion. The data were then analyzed dealing with the translation strategies and the researcher’s suggested translation version for the inappropriate translation. The suggested translation version was later validated by two validators to make sure that the research results would not be biased. The research shows that there are 10 translation strategies used in the translation, namely synonymy, literal translation, paraphrase, deletion, hyponymy, free translation, emphasis change, modulation, borrowing, and abstraction change. It also proves that the translator’s translation is inappropriate with both validators agree about 90% with the researcher’s suggested translation. Key Words : translation strategies, inappropriateness Abstrak : Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji strategi yang digunakan oleh Lulu Wijaya dalam me-nerjemahkan Novel Emily Bronte Wuthering Heights dan untuk mengeksplorasi bagaimana ketidaksesuaian terjemahan Lulu Wijaya terhadap Novel Emily Bronte Wuthering Heights. Data penelitian diperoleh dari novel yang sedang dibahas dalam bahasa Inggris dan versi Indonesia. Data dianalisis terkait dengan strategi penerjemahan dan menyarankan terjemahan versi peneliti untuk terjemahan yang tidak sesuai. Terjemahan versi peneliti kemudian divalidasi oleh dua validator untuk memastikan bahwa hasil penelitian tidak akan bias. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada 10 strategi penerjemahan yang digunakan, yaitu sinonim, terjemahan harfiah, parafrase, penghapusan, hiponimi, terjemahan bebas, perubahan penekanan, modulasi, pinjaman, dan perubahan abstraksi. Hal ini membuktikan terjemahan Lulu Wijaya tidak tepat, kedua validator setuju sekitar 90% dengan terjemahan yang disarankan peneliti. This research approach is qualitative approach. Data in the form of verbal data with observation instruments and interview guides. The results of this study: (1) Variety Indonesian used in residential complex interactions multiethnic society Palu BTN North consists of the official variety, variety of business, casual variety, and variety of the familiar, and the determinants of the use of Indonesian diversity in housing complex interactions multiethnic society BTN Northern Palu consists of background factors said event, said participants, said destination, said series/ topic, said the tone, norms said, the type of speech; (2) symptoms consist of code switching language and mixed code, and a code over the determinants of changes in said situation, the presence of a third person, switching the subject, and the speaker wants emphasis, and the deciding factor is the limited use of mixed code and the code use the term more popular. Hasil penelitian ini: (1) Ragam bahasa Indonesia yang digunakan dalam interaksi masyarakat multietnik kompleks perumahan BTN Palu Utara terdiri atas ragam resmi, ragam usaha, ragam santai, dan ragam akrab, dan faktor penentu penggunaan ragam bahasa Indonesia dalam interaksi masyarakat multietnik kompleks perumahan BTN Palu Utara terdiri atas faktor latar peristiwa tutur, peserta tutur, tujuan tutur, rangkaian tutur /topik, nada tutur, norma tutur, tipe tutur; (2) gejala bahasa terdiri atas alih kode dan campur kode, dan faktor penentu alih kode berupa perubahan situasi tutur, kehadiran orang ketiga, peralihan pokok pembicaraan, dan penekanan keinginan penutur, dan faktor penentu campur kode adalah keterbatasan penggunaan kode dan penggunaan istilah yang lebih populer. Results of the study are there is a direct or indirect effect of socio-economic status of parents, family financial management education and learning in higher education towards financial literacy. As a result, it is far from promoting reading English for pleasure. Like other skills in life, young learners learn to read by reading. The more they read, the better their reading competence will be. The better they read, the more enjoyable they find the reading activity. These paradigms function as the basis of pro-viding young learners with various reading materials to read and enough time to spend for reading. This study aimed at developing English supplementary reading material to support young learners to enjoy some reading activities. The Research and Development (R & D) procedure was employed to perform the whole process of the development and validation. With the reading material developed available, young learners are supposed to enjoy reading their own choice at their own pace as they are put into a free voluntary reading program. As a result, young learners have shifted their negative mindset about reading activity. Key Words : english supplementary reading cards, free voluntary reading program Abstrak : Dalam kelas bahasa Inggris, sebagian besar pelajar pemula dimasukkan ke dalam sesi mem-baca intensif, dengan fokus pada prestasi akademiknya. Akibatnya, jauh dari tujuan untuk mengenalkan membaca bahasa Inggris yang menyenangkan. Seperti keterampilan hidup lainnya, pelajar pemula belajar membaca bacaaan. Semakin banyak yang mereka baca, akan semakin baik kompetensi membaca mereka. Semakin baik mereka membaca, lebih menyenangkan mereka melakukan aktivitas membaca. Paradigma ini berfungsi sebagai dasar untuk menyediakan pelajar pemula dengan berbagai bahan bacaan untuk dibaca dan menyediakan waktu yang cukup untuk membaca. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan bahan bacaan tambahan berbahasa Inggris untuk mendukung pelajar pemula agar menikmati kegiatan membaca. Prosedur Penelitian dan Pengembangan (R & D) dipakai untuk se-luruh proses pengembangan dan validasi. Dengan tersedianya bahan bacaan yang telah dikembang-kan, pelajar pemula seharusnya menikmati kegiatan membacanya dengan pilihan dan kemampuan mereka sendiri karena mereka dimasukkan ke dalam program membaca bebas secara sukarela. Akibat-nya pola pikir negatif mereka tentang aktivitas membaca telah bergeser. Using a quantitative ap-proach to quasi-experimental research design. The subjects were students of chemistry education, consisting of 57 students (experiment) and 55 students (control). The instrument research was a written test and questionnaires. The data were analyzed using Anova (Analysis of Variance). The research findings there are differences among students’ higher order thinking skills with a mean post-test online instructional strategies is 45.16 higher than students taught using expository instructional strategy which is 39.28, instructional goal orientation is higher 44.24 than 40.07 performance goal orientation. there is no interactions between online instructional strategies and expository with different goal orientation on students’ higher order thinking skills in basic chemistry courses. Key Words : online, expository, goal orientation, higher order thinking skills, basic chemistry Abstrak : Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji dan menjelaskan interaksi, perbedaan kemampuan berpikir tingkat tinggi mahasiswa yang diberi perlakuan pembelajaran online dan ekspositori dengan orientasi tujuan belajar dan orientasi tujuan penampilan pada mata kuliah kimia dasar. Menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan rancangan eksperimen semu. Subjek penelitian adalah mahasiswa pendidikan kimia berjumlah 57 orang (eksperimen) dan 55 orang (kontrol). Instrumen penelitian adalah lembar tes tertulis dan angket. Data Penelitian ini dianalisis dengan teknik Anova. Hasil penelitian ditemukan; terdapat perbedaan kemampuan berpikir tingkat tinggi mahasiswa dengan rerata posttest yang diberi perlakuan strategi pembelajaran online 45,16 lebih tinggi dari strategi pembelajaran ekspositori 39,28; serta rerata orientasi tujuan belajar 44,24 lebih tinggi dari orientasi tujuan penampilan 40,07. Namun tidak terdapat interaksi antara pembelajaran online dan ekspositori dengan orientasi tujuan berbeda terhadap kemampuan berpikir tingkat tinggi mahasiswa pada mata kuliah kimia dasar. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sekolah memiliki RPS multikultural, strategi yang dilakukan termuat dalam RPS multikultural, proses penyusunan RPS tampak pada alur penyusunan RAKS dan RJKM, implementasi RPS sudah baik, sekolah memfasilitasi siswa dalam pengembangan diri baik pada kemampuan akademik maupun non akademik. This study population is in class X of all High School in Ternate with sampling techniques of Multi Stage Random Sampling. Data analysis technique used is traditional path analysis model adopted from Causal Steps by Baron and Kenny. Findings show that (1) lifestyle have significant negative effect on the student’s consumption rationality , (2) the intensity of the economic have study significant effect on student’s consumption rationality, (3) lifestyle of student’s life have a significant negative effect on student learning outcomes, (4) the intensity of economic learning have significant effect on learning outcomes of economics student, (5) economics learning have significant effect on student’s consumption rationality, (6) the lifestyle of students have significant negative effect on consumption rationality through the learning outcomes of economics, (7) the intensity of economics learning significantly influence the consumption rationality through economics learning outcomes. Populasi penelitian ini siswa kelas X di SMA Negeri Se-Kota Ternate dengan teknik sampling Multy Stage Ramdom Sampling. Adapun teknik analisis data mengggunakan analisis jalur mengadopsi model Causal Steps dari Baron dan Kenny. This study uses a descriptive model of development, namely the development of framework approach- end-user development, and using testing phases of a product by combination trials of Borg and Gall. The program specification software is using fourth generation tools technique. The test is done to look at the effectiveness, efficiency and attractiveness of the product. The data in this qualitative test contains discussions and black box testing; as well as quantitative data from the questionnaire and field test. Experimental results show the effectiveness and maximum efficiency of the SI-PINTER, as well as the ability to triangulate the data generated by the 3 modules. Key Words : management information systems, educators and education personnel, vocational high schools Abstrak : Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: (1) membangun model proses pengolahan data informasi sekolah dan Sistem Informasi Manajemen; (2) menemukan spesifikasi software, hardware, dan brain-ware yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan, dan (3) aplikasi Sistem Informasi Pendidik dan Tenaga Ke-pendidikan Terpadu (SI-PINTER). Penelitian ini menggunakan model pengembangan deskriptif, yaitu pengembangan kerangka kerja menggunakan pendekatan end-user development, serta uji coba produk menggunakan kombinasi tahapan uji coba Borg dan Gall. Spesifikasi program software menggunakan teknik fourth generation tools. Uji coba dilakukan untuk melihat tingkat keefektifan, efisiensi dan daya tarik produk yang dihasilkan. Data uji coba ini bersifat kualitatif berisi hasil diskusi dan uji black box; serta data kuantitatif dari hasil kuesioner serta uji lapangan. Hasil uji coba menunjukkan tingkat keefektifan dan efisiensi yang maksimal dari SI-PINTER, serta kemampuan triangulasi data yang dihasilkan oleh 3 modul tersebut. Quasi Experimental Research is used with Posttest Only Design involving 54 students from two classes. A vocabulary test is constructed as a main instrument. Data of students’ score are analyzed by using Independent T-test. Findings reveal that semantically related words method has positive effects on students’ retention. It is recommended that English teachers implement semantically related words. They should also consider the materials is beneficial for students. Key Words : semantically related words, unrelated words, teaching vocabulary Abstrak : Penelitian ini ini bertujuan untuk menguji keberadaan perbedaan signifikan dalam penguasaan kosakata siswa yang diajar menggunakan semantically related words dan siswa yang diajarkan menggunakan semantically unrelated words. Kuasi Experimental Research digunakan dengan Posttest Only Design dan melibatkan 54 siswa dari dua kelas. Sebuah tes kosakata dibangun sebagai instrumen utama. Data skor siswa dianalisis dengan menggunakan Independent T-test. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa semantically related words memiliki efek positif pada retensi siswa. Disarankan agar guru bahasa Inggris menerapkan semantically related words. Mereka juga harus mempertimbangkan materi-materi yang bermanfaat bagi siswa.
