These metrics include: (1) the initial system reliability; (2) the projected reliability following failure mode mitigation; (3) reliability growth potential, i.e., the theoretical upper-limit on reliability achieved by finding and fixing all failure modes via a specified level of effectiveness; (4) the expected number of failure modes observed during testing; (5) the probability of observing a new failure mode and; (6) the fractional contribution of correctable failure modes to the initial probability of failure. These metrics and associated model equations give reliability practitioners the means to: (1) assess reliability achievement of discrete-use systems undergoing development; (2) address model goodness-of-fit concerns and; (3) quantify programmatic risk, and system maturity.","PeriodicalId":299782,"journal":{"name":"2010 Proceedings - Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116245476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is an interest in scientific understanding of the impact of lead-free electronics and an interest in mitigating lead-free reliability risks. The balance of these two highly dependent design elements throughout the design process requires insights provided through reliability and risk assessments at early stages of system concept development. If reliability impacts are not analyzed, designers often apply too much redundancy to ensure crew safety or apply too little redundancy or failure mitigation hardware to ensure they meet mass requirements imposed by mission designers. Understanding what the addition of mass to a design is buying you, from a performance as well as reliability perspective, can ensure design trades are being made with a risk-informed perspective. The technique discussed in this paper conveys a method of risk-informed design that is guided by system design documents and based heavily on face-to-face designer interaction and elicitation. This approach proved very efficient, as designers were closely engaged early in design cycles and forced to focus on reliability strategies that were heavily influenced and implemented by the designer's own expertise.","PeriodicalId":299782,"journal":{"name":"2010 Proceedings - Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130071912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, for some cases, the optimization results tend to approach the extreme stress levels and processing accelerated life testing under such stress levels would not obtain much information about lifetime and reliability of the test units. This paper presents an optimum design of constant stress accelerated life testing based on proportional hazardsproportional odds using penalized local D-optimality. It establishes the objective function as the product of the Fisher information matrix as defined in proportional hazardsproportional odds model and penalty functions which describe the ‘closeness’ of the probability density functions of two specified stress levels. Optimization results are obtained by maximizing the objective function subject to certain constraints. This optimum method avoids obtaining limit stress levels of test planning using D-optimality for some cases. Simulation study is given finally. The comparison of the optimization results by D-optimality and penalized local Doptimality shows that optimization results using penalized local D-optimality is more reasonable.","PeriodicalId":299782,"journal":{"name":"2010 Proceedings - Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121383108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the railway sector is striving to increase its capacity to meet the growing demand for the transport of goods and passengers with a high level of punctuality in its services. Higher availability requires the effective operation and maintenance of infrastructure, often necessitating the implementation of cost-effective preventive maintenance strategies. Therefore, a higher availability target means higher maintenance investment. However, the question of setting the availability target for the infrastructure is not easy, as it involves many influencing decision parameters, apart from a good understanding of the network configuration and traffic density. Railway networks that have a smaller number of trains and a low punctuality requirement do not require higher availability targets. The aim of this paper is to estimate the availability target for railway infrastructure based on the capacity and punctuality requirements of infrastructure managers and train operating companies. The objectives of the paper are to develop an approach to i) estimating the capacity of the infrastructure based on the design and operational characteristics and evaluating the influence of infrastructure availability on the required capacity and ii) estimating the volume of primary and secondary delay due to failures and maintenance of the infrastructure and establishing the relationship between availability and punctuality requirements. To achieve these objectives, an example is presented with parameters drawn from failure, maintenance and traffic data. Finally, a model has been developed in Petri-Nets to establish a relationship between availability, capacity and punctuality. Monte Carlo simulation is used to establish the relationship. The simulation results illustrate the effect of infrastructure availability on train delays and capacity.","PeriodicalId":299782,"journal":{"name":"2010 Proceedings - Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133681730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
