Rentetan sejarah yang menarik berkenaan eksplorasi minyak dan gas Sabah perlu diamati semula khususnya setelah Petroliam Nasional Berhad atau Petronas ditubuhkan pada tahun 1974 yang membolehkan Sabah dibekalkan dengan sumber minyak dan gas yang dihasilkan dari telaga luar pantai Sabah pada tahun 1980. Kajian ini banyak bergantung kepada sumber primer dalam bentuk dokumen rasmi, laporan dan akhbar yang diperolehi dari Arkib Negeri Sabah (ANS), Malaysia. Kajian mendapati bahawa walaupun percubaan eksplorasi minyak Borneo Utara atau Sabah kemudiannya telah dilaksanakan oleh BNBC semenjak tahun 1881, kegiatan tersebut hanya diperkukuh selepas tamat tempoh pendudukan Jepun. Perkembangan ini semakin ketara apabila berlaku perubahan dalam sistem antarabangsa yang bersifat rule-based yakni pengenalan undang-undang kelautan bermula dari tahun 1950-an yang telah memberi peluang kepada British dan kerajaan Sabah, melalui pelbagai syarikat yang dilantik, untuk menjalankan eksplorasi minyak ke kawasan luar pantai di LCS. Kegiatan cari gali minyak sehingga ke kawasan LCS terbukti membuahkan hasil khususnya dalam memakmurkan ekonomi Malaysia.","PeriodicalId":292008,"journal":{"name":"KEMANUSIAAN The Asian Journal of Humanities","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131965481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yahya Michot (b. 1952) and ‘Abd Allah Bayyah’s (b. 1935) modern day readings of this fatwa emphasise different attitudes towards Mongols: Michot emphasised the word yuqātal (should be fought) in his reading of the text while Bayyah emphasised the word yu’āmal (should be justly treated). This seemingly small difference has had a large impact on Muslims’ understanding of fatwa. For instance, these two readings might alter readers’ perceptions of fatwa as either a literal or metaphorical spiritual battle. This article is grounded in a multidisciplinary approach that combines the selection, translation and critical reading of the selected sources with historical research. The overall approach followed in this article is best described as inductive. This article analyses Michot and Bayyah’s readings through a close reading of the fatwa itself. It concludes by deducing that the Mardin Fatwa text really does represent Ibn Taymiyyah’s opinion and that Yahya Michot’s reading of the text is the correct one.","PeriodicalId":292008,"journal":{"name":"KEMANUSIAAN The Asian Journal of Humanities","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129206392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ritual ini pada asalnya berkait rapat dengan aktiviti mengayau sebelum Syarikat Berpiagam (British) Borneo Utara mentadbir Borneo Utara (Sabah) pada akhir kurun ke-19. Makalah ini bertujuan menganalisis aspek perubahan ritual muinsamung berasaskan teori perubahan ritual. Selain itu, pengolahan tarian Sumanggak oleh Suana Kabora pada tahun 1983 sebagai satu usaha kreatif bagi memulihara ritual silam Tombonuo turut diteliti. Bagi mengumpul data kajian, dua siri kerja lapangan yang menggunakan kaedah temu bual dan pemerhatian telah dilakukan di tiga buah kampung Tombonuo di daerah Pitas. Kajian ini mendapati fungsi ritual muinsamung yang berkait dengan aktiviti mengayau telah berubah menjadi ritual monginsamung, yang dikendalikan untuk upacara pengebumian disebabkan perubahan politik dan kehendak sosial. Disebabkan wujudnya keinginan untuk memastikan agar ritual turun-temurun etniknya terus dikekalkan, sebahagian daripada persembahan ritual lama ini telah diolah secara kreatif oleh anggota masyarakat menjadi satu bentuk tarian lantas dianggap sebagai satu perubahan daripada ritual yang sakral kepada persembahan estetik yang sekular.","PeriodicalId":292008,"journal":{"name":"KEMANUSIAAN The Asian Journal of Humanities","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125412677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The methodology of this research is qualitative and Islamic classical sources have been used to further elucidate Islam’s stance, as we have referred to some articles and resources to understand the concept of habituation method and its contradictions with moral autonomy. The achievement of the paper is realising the contradiction between the habituation method and moral autonomy and habituation’s incompatibility with the rational growth and development of the youth which is the goal of Islamic education. Therefore, this method cannot be accepted in Islamic moral education. On the other hand, there are some narratives in the Islamic sources that apparently have recommended this method, so another important achievement of the article is the proper interpretation of these narratives, presented for the first time. According to this interpretation, these narratives do not recommend the habituation method, but rather the continuity and maintenance of the action. Therefore, there is no disapproval in Islamic sources in this regard, and these sources reject the use of this method in moral education. The paper concludes by saying that the habituation method is not an Islamic method of education, and Islamic narrations have not recommended it. This paper comes with a suggestion that education scholars and policy makers need to extract other methods from the Islamic sources and devise them according to scientific findings instead of using this method.","PeriodicalId":292008,"journal":{"name":"KEMANUSIAAN The Asian Journal of Humanities","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126045349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the trends of thought is traditionalism, which is commonly perceived as a broad category of the school of thought. There is no single entity called traditionalism since it takes on different faces. With specific references to M. Quraish Shihab, Abd Muin Salim and Nashruddin Baidan, this article aims to study all these traditional Muslim thinkers’ views on Quran interpretation by employing a historical approach. The study mainly focuses on, first, the continuity and changes concerning elements initially derived from some sources and elements developed originally and secondly, on response to modern Western legacies of social sciences and humanities approaches. This article will argue that critical traditionalism constitutes many faces. This trend of a mode of thought is viewed from its followers’ insisting on the sufficiency of traditional sources of interpretation, based on argumentations set up primarily by classical Muslim scholars, rationalising traditional argumentations and critical response and clarification to Western approaches in interpreting the Quran.","PeriodicalId":292008,"journal":{"name":"KEMANUSIAAN The Asian Journal of Humanities","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121641338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
