{"title":"«Poem Should Thrill»: on the Rough Sonnets of Neoclassic Poets in the Context of the Totalitarian Regime","authors":"I. The works of Ukrainian neoclassicists as the representatives of the era of «Executed Renaissance», who left an invaluable heritage and made a tremendous contribution to the enrichment of not only Ukrainian but also world literature, have repeatedly become the subject of scholars’ research. The purpose of the study is to analyze the sonnet as a phenomenon that appeared in the first third of the last century: what caused its «rigidity» and «severity», as well as what is its poetic beauty. Materials and methods of research. This article is based on the analysis of archival materials, letters, memoirs, the press of the twenties («Chervonyi Shliakh», «Nova Hromada», etc.), published and unpublished editions of works by Ukrainian neoclassicists. The severity of life dictated its own rules, its own style and its own norms. Sonnets of Ukrainian neoclassicists were also rigit or «strict». Comparative-historical and descriptive methods are used in the work. Discussion. The representatives of the informal society «neoclassicism», which was formed in Ukraine in the 20s of the 20th century, professed an aesthetic concept of spiritual renewal of the writer’s consciousness and the nation in general, disciplined the cardiocentric element of the «executed Renaissance» generation of artists, combining the Dionysian tradition with the Apollonian culture. The aesthetic platform that united the neoclassicists was the love to the word, to the strict form, to the great heritage of the world literature. They realized the sonnet as a «strict style», as a «severe» form. Ukrainian neoclassicists set the task of creating a «great style of Ukrainian literature» based on Greco-Roman antiquity and European Parnassians; hence there is a cult of strict classical forms (sonnet, octave, Alexandrine verse, elegiac distich). When Ukrainian neoclassicists spoke, they did not declaim ideological and aesthetic manifestos. Ukrainian neoclassicists, in contrast to the Russian ones, were distinguished by greater creative conservatism: if the latter put Pushkin as a role model, the first were oriented towards Greco-Roman antiquity and French Parnassians (the first edition of Ukrainian neoclassicism was «The Anthology of Roman Poetry» by M. Zerov, 1920), strictly adhered to canonical classical forms. Conclusions. The genre canon of the sonnet implies conceptuality that must be realized through a certain compositional rhythm according to the universal scheme: thesis – antithesis – synthesis. Such scheme of the sonnet dramatic line development «tells» the poet the most general direction in the development of thought, mood, and contemplation. The sonnet allows to resolve contradictions. Consequently, it is a balance between the stable and the variable, a dialogue with yourself, with the world; this is the beauty of dramatic trembles of poetic content. {"title":"Mykhailo Hrushevskyi in the History of Ukrainian Journalism","authors":"T. Mykhailo Sergiiovych Hrushevskyi, an outstanding scientist, a man of broad erudition, extraordinary diligence, takes one of the honorary places in the history of Ukrainian science and culture of the late 19th – first third of 20th century. Possessing encyclopedic scientific knowledge, the ability to comprehensively analyze and reproduce historical processes in an artistic form, he clearly manifested himself in many fields of knowledge: history, archeography, literary studies, folklore, and others. But first of all, Mykhailo Hrushevskyi is a prominent historian and patriot of his people, who created the first most complete, generalizing study of the history of Ukraine from ancient times to the second half of the 17th century. The scientific concept of Mykhailo Hrushevskyi is based on the organic unity of high professionalism of materials presentation, deep knowledge of literature and sources, and originality of their interpretation. As a politician, he worked his way from the founder of the National Democratic Party of Galicia and the Society of Ukrainian Progressives in Kyiv to the creator of the foundations of an independent Ukrainian state. He was Chairman of the Central Rada, and later recognized the Soviet regime in Ukraine and expressed readiness to serve it. His views were changing; socio-political concepts and philosophical perceptions of life were evolving but love for his people and for the historical truth for him have always been the highest standard in scientific creativity and political activity. Mykhailo Hrushevskyi was the son of his time. As well as many other prominent figures of Ukraine, he presented the tragic historical fate of the Ukrainian lands dismembered by political borders, which were deprived of their own statehood, in his works. As a scientist and politician, Mykhailo Hrushevskyi was deeply saddened by the fate of his people. Mykhailo Hrushevskyi, prominent Ukrainian historian, politician, writer, publicist, editor, publisher, also made a significant contribution to the development of the native journalism. Work and studying of the bibliographic sources, important periods in the creative life and work of Mykhailo Hrushevskyi allowed to identify the main periodicals that he edited and published or acted as a leading publicist (reviewer, reader, literary critic, author of iconic and travel essays, notes, articles, etc.). The article enlights the organizational talent in the field of publishing and editorial skills in the newspaper and magazine area of Mykhailo Hrushevskyi in the late 19th – early 20th centuries. {"title":"The Analysis of Two Components English Statements with the Translated Morpheme КАРТ-","authors":"K. Nowadays the technical students’ interest in linguistic studies during English language classes in general and concerning land management in particular is being actualized in the context of defining metacommunicative markers as utterance boundaries for the formation of a terminological compound nest.The purpose of this article is to describe the practical experience of analyzing the features of two-component phrases with translated morpheme “карт-“ (hereinafter – DSMK) being based on the analysis of foreign scientific sources on land management according to the defined algorithm. The results of the study are presented in seven conclusions. The first conclusion is the expediency of students' analysis of phrases on land management according to the defined algorithm: to review the sources for the presence of the most common morphemes with high derivation potential and to be convinced of the expediency of studying a certain selected morpheme, to write down existing Ukrainian phrases with the required morpheme, assigning a specific number, spread terminological foreign phrases by blocks by structural features, to analyze according to other related characteristics for further generalization-collection of information from each block (according to the reliability of translation, the presence of proper names and numerical values, in relation to the land management industry, by the correspondence of the number of components of the Ukrainian and English variants and by the frequency of use in the educational texts and own statements of future land managers). The second conclusion is the expediency of taking into consideration the phrases with the translated morpheme “карт-“, as 108 varieties of stable English clichés were found. The third conclusion is the assignment of two-component attributive-nominative English phrases without additional conjunctions or prepositions to those that have an extremely high derivational potential to attract the translated card morpheme - in 99 varieties with a parallel assignment of two-component clichés with an additional preposition of or in / on connectors to those that have low derivation potential in only 9 varieties. The fourth conclusion is the assertion that the majority of DSMK with a significant quantitative advantage deals with the narrow specialization in cartography in contrast to the indirect being used in general thematic texts. The fifth conclusion is that the DSMK is more prone to the expected translation (74:34 ratio), although more than a third of these clichés should be guided by official translation options. The sixth conclusion is to determine the very low relevance of DSMK to proper names and numerical values and to a slightly higher percentage of DSMK with different number of components in the Ukrainian and English versions of the translation. So, the ability to correspond in business sphere is a crucial skill for the employees of multinational companies as well as for those who communicate internationally in different fields. It also concerns the cross-cultural aspect of organizing and translating business letters taking into consideration the key role of international communication due to the growing globalization of our society, and a lot of attention is paid to the national differences and peculiarities we may face while establishing contacts with foreign colleagues and partners. It analyses numerous studies and articles written by linguists, interpreters as well as by business coaches who, basing on their research and experience give advice and suggest solutions to different challenges we may face in this sphere. The article focuses on the different issues, such as the language and style, the structure and layout, the peculiarities and difficulties of translation, the things which should be avoided and are inappropriate in business letters. A lot of advice with numerous examples are given in order to avoid misinterpreting when it comes to cross-culture communication as well as embarrassing mistakes and those mistakes, which may have serious professional consequences. The article focuses six different problematic areas in business letter translation. These include: lexical-semantic problems; grammar; syntax; rhetoric; and pragmatic and cultural problems. Language skills are becoming increasingly important in organisations and businesses who want to be competitive on an international level. Mastery in foreign languages is considered not just an excellent tool to bridge gaps between people coming from different countries and to create strong sentimental and professional relationships, but above all an instrument that enables workers to considerably improve their career prospects. Knowing how to use a language in specific circumstances and purposes gives people a very strong bargaining power, especially in the labour world. Whereas up to twenty or thirty years ago, speaking a foreign language was a very important prerequisite for just a few, like managers or diplomats, today it has become of fundamental importance in all professional circles. In fact, in today’s European society, languages and intercultural play a fundamental role in getting to know different people and in obtaining professional and economic development. This explains why today there exists a need to diversify the language training market with courses in foreign languages for specific purposes, be it for tourism, for call centers, for business and so on, focusing on acquiring the necessary terminological, interdisciplinary and intercultural skills needed for specific jobs. Such courses imply addressing the immediate and very specific needs of the learners involved, having as their driving force, both in the preparation stage as well as in the development stage, the needs analysis of the learners. In terms of implementation and methodology, such courses have to be totally learner-focused, practically oriented and, above all, applied to professional contexts, providing a method of learning, teaching and assessing basic skills or abilities in the language, not simply according to the particular needs of the students but also in line with the specific requirements of the vocational domain. This obviously presents a number of challenges which need to be discussed and analysed from both the educators’ and the students’ point of view, given that such courses need to address the immediate and very specific needs of the learners involved, which in turn should serve as the basis for informed curriculum practices, such as syllabus design, materials development and instructional design. It also necessitates a threefold framework design, consisting of an individual theoretical component of learning, an individual practical component as well as the provision for group work and practice. The structural and semantic specifics of small advertising texts was investigating in the article. The relevance of the study to improve the efficiency and improve the quality of advertising texts, which means the development of the advertising industry as a whole. The purpose of research is analyze the structural and semantic specifics of small advertising texts. To achieve this goal the following tasks are set: - consider the interpretation of the concept of \"advertising text\"; - describe the semantic specifics and criteria for filling the advertising text; - identify the structural components of the advertising text, give their characteristics; - to analyze the role of structural and semantic elements of the advertising text, the prospects of their further research. Results of research. The article gives a general definition of the term \"advertising text\". It is establishing that the advertising text is an element of public communication aimed at the implementation of the speech influence of the communicator on the recipient of the message, in order to achieve the desired communicative effect. It is determined that advertising texts are an important means of communication between producers and consumers. The main features of small advertising text are characterized - a small amount of information presented in a concise form, expressive means of speech, originality of style, metaphor, originality of vocabulary, syntax of magazine advertising texts. During the research, the main components of the structural organization of advertising texts were identified - non-verbal (compositional) and verbal (content) components. The article found that the quantity of structural elements of small advertising texts may vary, depending on the communicative content of the text, but the main structural elements are the title, main advertising text and slogan. A title attracts attention and arouses consumer interest in the proposed product. The headline contains the main argument of advertising, which reflects the content of the advertising appeal. The main advertising argument in the title in further disclosed in the main text. A slogan is a concise, meaningful advertising phrase that embodies an advertising offer and conveys a description of its object. Its main goal is to focus the customer's attention and create an emotional associative image to stimulate brand awareness. The success of the advertising slogan is achieved through such stylistic devices as a special grammatical structure (simple sentences, imperative mood) and lexical means of expression A main text of the advertisement informs the consumer about a particular product or service, reveals its characteristics in more detail, encourages the user to buy it. The article analyzes the features of the category of process in epizootological terminology and identifies a set of language tools in English that serve to express this category. The studied category is widely used in epizootological terminology. This is due to the variety of concepts of epizootological science, the number of forms of manifestation of the epizootic process, the evolution of veterinary knowledge, which is reflected in the semantics of terms. The purpose of the article is to study the role of the processes category and its linguistic expression in the epizootiological terminology of the English language. Materials and methods of research. The source base of the work was the terms obtained by the method of continuous sampling from lexicographic sources on epizootology. The main methods used in the study were systematization and categorical analysis of epizootiological terms. Results of the research. It is revealed that the following subcategories of the process are reflected in the veterinary terminology of epizootology: proper processes, states and events. The subcategory \"proper processes\" represents changes, the distinguishing feature of which is the development over time, duration and mode of the epizootic. Terms that objectify such signs express different types of movement and routes of transmission of infectious disease. The subcategory \"state\" is a special kind of process characterized by relative staticity. In the studied terminology, the category of condition is presented in the nominations of diseases, as well as physiological and pathophysiological conditions. The subcategory of \"event\" is represented by epizootological terms that nominate methods of treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. The author characterizes the linguistic means of the category of process in English: specialized morphemes, special vocabulary, syntactic constructions that carry procedural information. Сonclusions. The paper considers study areas for formation of the poly-/ multicultural personality of the future teacher who is ready to deliver high-class philological study and instructional value in the area of higher education. That is seen possible with application of reflexive approach as methodology for the educational process, accompanied as well by axiological, culturological, communicative, and environmental approaches for fostering high cultural and linguistic values with a future teacher of foreign languages in a poly- / multicultural classroom. Establishing, or fostering, or cultivating poly- / multiculturalism in higher education for foreign language teachers is inextricably linked with the processes of comprehension, awareness, and the formation of such teachers’ own personal values to knowledge and culture, their own activities, especially with the process of reflection (reflexion). In this regard, reflective thinking comes to the fore. Next, both formation and development of such reflective thinking become important tasks at all levels of (higher) education in general and instruction and acquisition of foreign languages, in particular. At the same time, it is critical to note that reflective thinking is at the foundation of applying coaching oriented technologies as a pool of highly efficient tools to achieve the set goals of the coach (classroom teacher, mentor, supervisor, foreign language instructor, trainer, or expert) and a coachee, student in a poly- / multicultural classroom. It is also recommended under the research to distinguish between the adjective terms reflexive’ and reflective’. To be more precise, reflective’ under the study results means natural / characteristic of something which reflects, or redirects back to the source’ while reflexive’ stipulates referring back to the subject, or having an object equal to the subject’.
