Women's identities are effaced when they are used as a symbol for a nation; they are seen as inferior to men when they are assigned the private space of home as opposed to men's public space. The most efficient way of examining whether these dichotomies and hegemonic relationships exist across different cultures, as Linda McDowell suggests, is by conducting comparative studies. The present study examines how space is gendered in Seamus Heaney’s Death of a Naturalist (1966) compared to Ahmed Abdel Muti Hijazi’s A Heartless City (1959). The findings show that space is gendered in the same way in Eastern and Western cultures: the homeland is portrayed as a woman; men are assigned public space while women are confined to the private space of home; moreover, a woman's body is portrayed as space for men's sexual acts. These findings suggest the persistence of gender stratification, masculine hegemony and women’s inferiority across cultures, which is alarming given the fact that they have been so deeply engraved in collective consciousness that they have come to be viewed as natural.","PeriodicalId":276703,"journal":{"name":"Textual Turnings: An International Peer-Reviewed Journal in English Studies","volume":"43 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139166372","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Christine Watson's novel Tiny Sunbirds Faraway (2011) has been analyzed as a work that depicts the importance of the presence of father and mother in the lives of the members of a family, in particular, and its importance for a consolidated society, in general. A striking notion that is worth analyzing in both novels, however, has not been given any attention, namely, the relationship between the oppression of nature and the oppression of women in the two novels. Though the texts’ settings differ, The Edible Woman’ s context is Canada, whereas the context of Tiny Sunbirds is the Niger Delta area, Nigeria, Africa, both are undergirded by the preservation of nature for the benefit of man and woman. The present study investigates feminist ecological principles in the two novels. It also calls for the preservation and development of nature for the benefit of man within the framework of the joint relations between women and nature, on one hand, and between women and nature and the environment, on the other. The study relies on textual analysis and applies the principles of the environmental feminist critical movement called ecofeminism. Exceeding previous studies’ treatment of feminist ecology within an ideological framework of different orientations with some historical depth, the current study seeks, through the analysis of the two texts under investigation, to put solutions for the future relationship of cooperation between men and women in an ethical context that transcends male domination and prevents women’s oppression. It also seeks to present an ideological critique based on women’s experiences in the field of social production and nature conservation.","PeriodicalId":276703,"journal":{"name":"Textual Turnings: An International Peer-Reviewed Journal in English Studies","volume":"13 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139166859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in the postdramatic theatre, characterized by “subjecting the traditional relationship of theatre to drama to deconstruction” (Lehmann 2), the existence of a character, a well defined dramatic persona, was doubted or negated in a way that destabilizes the Aristotelian dramatic conventions. The character position was destabilized in contemporary theater via disconnecting the actor from representing a character role, becoming just “a performer offering his/her presence on stage for contemplation”, (Lehmann 136), or through absenting the actors completely and replacing them with machines or multimedia creations. The study then approaches Patrick Ness's A Monster Calls (2011) from a performatist perspective, with an attempt to spotlight and trace the principal features of Eshelman's proposed theory in the novel, with the aim of proving that the emerging theory qualifies as a successful illustrator of the epochal paradigm shifts in literary studies in the post-postmodern era.","PeriodicalId":276703,"journal":{"name":"Textual Turnings: An International Peer-Reviewed Journal in English Studies","volume":"51 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139195639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study uses the interpersonal metafunction of language to assess the quality of the translation. The assessment goal is to check if the interpersonal metafunction of the translated text is equivalent to the interpersonal metafunction of the original text. The tools derived from Halliday’s SFL are important in the analysis because SFL is the linguistic branch that deals closely with language functions and social aspects. At the same time, the translation is seen as a whole product as well as a series of processes (Bardi, 2008). The study adopts a descriptive contrastive approach to present the main choices of interpersonal metafunction systems and their realizations in English and Arabic and uses SFL to analyze grammatical realizations of Mood system choices, seeking the Tenor variable of texts represented in context. The objective assessment is based on giving a score for each time there is a success in finding the appropriate equivalent. The texts used are originally published texts in English and their authenticated published translations in Arabic. The texts are taken from single registers, and the analysis was limited to simple clauses.","PeriodicalId":276703,"journal":{"name":"Textual Turnings: An International Peer-Reviewed Journal in English Studies","volume":"45 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139192198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study argues that the localization of websites could be explored thoroughly within the boundaries of eco-translatology - an emerging paradigm in Translation Studies which emphasizes the holistic perspective. Through selective adaptation and adaptive selection, translators try to create balance and harmony between the ecological contexts of the source and target texts. By analyzing the Arabic translation of English taglines on food and beverage brand websites based on Hu's (2020) eco-translatology theory, this study investigates the extent to which the interaction among the agents in the localization industry leads to a series of transformations to preserve the linguistic, cultural, and communicative dimensions of the taglines. The findings highlight that the eco-translatology approach provides a comprehensive framework to explain the transformations made by translators. Consequently, the study underscores the importance of harmoniously integrating translation studies and localization practices, ensuring that localization remains rooted in translation principles and incorporates advancements in research.","PeriodicalId":276703,"journal":{"name":"Textual Turnings: An International Peer-Reviewed Journal in English Studies","volume":"17 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139191153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study applies van Leeuwen’s (2007) (de) legitimation strategies model. Two speeches, extracted from the White House official website and delivered by President Biden on two different occasions during the first few months of the war being waged, are analyzed. The results reveal US President Biden’s tendency to rely mainly on three de-legitimation categories. The most frequently employed strategy is moral evaluation through evaluative modifiers and abstraction. The second most frequent strategy is authorization mainly through authority of conformity, in addition to impersonal and personal authority. Finally, both instrumental and theoretical rationalization are employed to delegitimate the Russian war in Ukraine and legitimize the US assistance provided to it.","PeriodicalId":276703,"journal":{"name":"Textual Turnings: An International Peer-Reviewed Journal in English Studies","volume":"54 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139192690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Metamodernism is one of the many proposed answers to this quandary, describing an emerging cultural sensibility that oscillates between postmodern and modern sensibilities, ultimately creating something completely new. This paradigm shift from postmodernism is most apparent in sitcoms; a new wave of American television shows has started destabilising the typical image of postmodern sitcoms that heavily relied on cynicism, ironic detachment, self-reflexivity, and parodying the limitations of the medium itself. This research investigates the use of code-switching by Egyptian social media Influencers attempting to cover the types, reasons/motivations, and the functions of code-switching. The subjects of this research are a famous Egyptian blogger and an online English teacher who mix English with Arabic to deliver their meaning. The study is qualitative in nature since it requires description of code switching based on the data collected that show instances of code switching. Furthermore, the data are three short videos focusing on the utterances where the code-switching is unavoidably employed as a means of social communication. The results reveal that three types of code-switching have been used by the English instructors: intersentential, intrasentential and tag switching , whereas the intrasentential type is the most used by both the blogger and the English language instructor; social media influencers. Furthermore, the two most dominant factors that make Egyptian social media influencers generally code-switch are the facility of retrieving words from the memory and the situational factor.","PeriodicalId":276703,"journal":{"name":"Textual Turnings: An International Peer-Reviewed Journal in English Studies","volume":"48 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139192604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
