New curricula proposed for England seem to place an increasing emphasis on statistics as a branch of mathematics, and less on its role of making sense of the complex evidence in the world around us. The paper outlines the proposed curriculum developments, and discusses the proposed developments in the context of developments in the wider statistics community in respect of the use of hypothesis testing. It compares the direction of curriculum change with that of New Zealand and discuss the challenges facing the successful implementation of the new curriculum.","PeriodicalId":273663,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Statistics Education: Developments, Experiences, and Assessments IASE Satellite","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114881175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, this work shows a proposed activity for elementary school students. The main objective of this study was to plan and implement a didactic sequence, involving the use of R- Commander program to stimulate students interest and the understanding of statistical concepts. In terms of methodology, the maid research is classified as a case study in a public school in Porto Alegre (RS, Brazil), with a class of 25 ninth graders of elementary school. This proposal was planned to focus on research and followed the concepts of Mathematical Modeling. Data analysis was based on the principles of Statistics Teaching. From the results it was possible to observe that the Mathematical Modeling combined with the use of R-Commander was a favorable combination for a good approach to Statistics teaching. The Mathematical Modeling, which was based this proposal, allowed students to think about reality through unforeseen situations that made possible the living of actual experiences. The software, much more than a simple tool was capable of breaking the static and monotonous view of some concepts, providing a dynamic and enabling students to further reflection on the concepts studied. The didactic proposal was able to arouse the interest and curiosity of the students and encouraged them to move. Students who previously showed apathetic in Mathematics classes were put on the move in search of the issues raised. Therefore it was observed that work with Mathematical Modeling in a research environment is a good alternative to overcome the limitation of lack of teaching statistical in primary school.","PeriodicalId":273663,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Statistics Education: Developments, Experiences, and Assessments IASE Satellite","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115299783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To lessen this problem this paper establishes some connections between descriptive statistics, probability, and mathematics, comparing statistical variables, random variables, and functions. Several arguments are given to justify that in statistical applications, it is not the function representing the variable that matters, but the key element is the induced frequency distribution, which is important for the teaching probability theory. Some pedagogical ideas are given for teaching continuous variables, a topic that poses subtle mathematical issues, like the meaning of a real number, of continuous functions, and of infinite domains, and that the exact value of a continuous variable is not observable.","PeriodicalId":273663,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Statistics Education: Developments, Experiences, and Assessments IASE Satellite","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122761429","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim was to develop teaching strategies using dynamic visualisation software. Before and after instruction, students sat tests involving multi-choice and True/False questions on sampling and confidence intervals. Performance is analysed in terms of increases in correct answers and changes in responses. The percentage correct in both the pre-test and post- tests varied widely. Under two thirds of students answered the same in both tests but 5-18% changed correct to incorrect answers and 13-27% incorrect to correct answers. Relevance of questions, appropriateness of multi-choice and True/False questions in assessment and levels of learning (or unlearning) acceptable to teachers are discussed. Pre- and post-tests can measure student understanding and prior skills, but multi-choice and True/False questions may not be adequate for this purpose.","PeriodicalId":273663,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Statistics Education: Developments, Experiences, and Assessments IASE Satellite","volume":"124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123200274","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This activity was part of the teaching sequence “Jefferson’s Random Walks,” which deals with probabilistic basic concepts. In the diagram, the combinations of the visits of Jefferson to five friends (placed on a 3D 5x5 board), depending on four coin tosses, were presented. Two plastic trays were used (representing the coin), foam cards of two different textures (representing each face), and toys to represent the visited friend. Students identified just four out of the six visiting paths at the board’s center. The researcher helped by identifying the missing paths, and the students registered all 16 possible paths. The importance of this study is to contribute to discussions about adaptation of materials and teaching methods for probabilistic contexts for blind students.","PeriodicalId":273663,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Statistics Education: Developments, Experiences, and Assessments IASE Satellite","volume":"44 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132871286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on Prova Brazil data, we test whether there is a difference between the prevalence of school factors in the 215 schools identified by the Excellence with Equity study compared to schools with similar characteristics in 2007 but which did not show the same performance regarding the learning of their students thereafter. Taking into account statistical significance, results show that the treatment schools have principals who have been more highly rated by teachers for their leadership attributes; better facilities and operating conditions; more cohesive management and teaching teams; better working conditions for teachers; more learning opportunities; and less school violence. It is also possible to infer that the presence of better educational and infrastructure-related conditions in treatment schools may be a result of the effective management of resource.","PeriodicalId":273663,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Statistics Education: Developments, Experiences, and Assessments IASE Satellite","volume":"92 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120965893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
