However, it is costly to use real-life electric power substation for training students in the designing and setting up of substation monitoring and control systems. Moreover, most software simulation based laboratories on substation monitoring and control, focus on determining the effects of abnormal conditions on the protection of the electrical network, as opposed to the configuring of the smart relays as well as the communication networks that support the monitoring and control of substations. This paper presents a relay configuration laboratory that utilizes a motor drive as a three phase power source, and a three phase induction motor as a load on a substation bus. The laboratory gives automation students an opportunity to configure a real life substation monitoring and control relay, without exposing them to the risk of working with high voltages that characterize electric power substations.","PeriodicalId":273456,"journal":{"name":"2013 3rd Interdisciplinary Engineering Design Education Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129358671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The country's wealth stems from oil, gas and petrochemical industries. Engineers are in high demand in all specializations and Qatar University (QU), Qatar's only national university, provides the country with the highest number of engineering graduates. For engineers, whose occupation allows them potential for positive or negative societal impacts, it is critical that their decisions involve sound ethical judgment, hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public, and perform services only in areas of their competence. This ethical responsibility is considered and enhanced in the teaching of ethics in their engineering curriculum. In this paper, a review of current practices in teaching ethics in engineering at QU is given. Chemical engineering selected as a case study. The aim of the study is to review current practices, identify gaps and make recommendations to the college to enhance the ethics education in the engineering curriculum at QU.","PeriodicalId":273456,"journal":{"name":"2013 3rd Interdisciplinary Engineering Design Education Conference","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122751994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work presents a one term teaching experience on a K-11 class focusing on learning OOD and OOP by using a versatile framework such as XNA to build games. The pedagogical approach, the context and the contents of the course are presented, with a focus on the challenges in presenting advanced curriculum topics in a classroom with highly differentiated students and on the strategies used to overcome such difficulties. The main elements of the approach are: a project and inquiry based pedagogical method; an “object first” approach leading to designing an UML class and a sequence diagram from the beginning, formation of a shared memory of student's solutions to assignments and a blog used for supporting class activities and fostering self-reflection and critical thinking. A content analysis of the blog as well as of the data collected during face to face conversation both in the laboratory and in class reveals common errors and suggests approaches for avoiding them.","PeriodicalId":273456,"journal":{"name":"2013 3rd Interdisciplinary Engineering Design Education Conference","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114387361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach that we present in the paper is based on a new tool that extends the features of the Digital Electronics Education and Design Suite (Deeds). The FPGA extension allows students to compile a project generated with Deeds into an FPGA chip, reducing to a minimum the interaction with the FPGA-specific CAD. The tool allows the student to associate all the inputs and outputs of the Deeds project to the devices and resources of an FPGA development board and generates all the VHDL and script files needed by the CAD to compile the project and load it on the board for testing. An extensive field test on a large number of students has proved its pedagogical value.","PeriodicalId":273456,"journal":{"name":"2013 3rd Interdisciplinary Engineering Design Education Conference","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132428310","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current generations of the technology have reached dimensions well below 100nm where nano-scale phenomena are prominent. Transistors in such a small scale behave very differently than the classic long channel devices taught in most undergraduate level textbooks. Moreover, there are new challenges in nano-scale circuit design, such as process variations and reliability issues that are not taught in undergraduate level courses. Working on latest technology issues is typically an opportunity available only to graduate level students working on related research projects. To address this gap, using a NASA Curriculum Improvements Partnership Award for the Integration of Research (CIPAIR) grant, we have created a summer internship program that engages community college students in research projects on the latest challenges of circuit design in nano-scale semiconductor technology. Through this program, four community college students were mentored by two graduate students in a research project to analyze performance degradation of integrated circuits due to transistor aging effects in nano-scale. In this research, analysis of transistor breakdown was performed through computer simulations to understand effects on circuit power and performance. A ring oscillator circuit was utilized as a generic logic circuit for this research. The breakdown was modeled by resistors placed between the transistor terminals. The value of the resistor represents the severity of the breakdown; large resistors represent fresh transistors, whereas low resistors represent a fully broken transistor. In addition to computer simulations, real ICs were studied by taking power measurements experimentally. This research aims to offer better insight into the impact of transistor breakdown and to improve IC design in nano-scale. Through this internship program, the undergraduate students not only contributed to research and discovery, but also gained valuable experience and knowledge of nano-scale circuits that could have not been achieved in traditional educational methods.","PeriodicalId":273456,"journal":{"name":"2013 3rd Interdisciplinary Engineering Design Education Conference","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122096800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author argues that the most important advantage of a gaming platform to use in education and e-learning vertical is that the video games are inherently engaging, highly interactive, a personal experience, very relaxing and fun to the players, which places the player's minds in an excited mental state, making it the best opportunity to strategically embed education contents. In such a unique frame of mind, the player is playing the game to win, yet enjoying the challenge. That frame of mind is also the best suited to learn, not just passively as in reading a book, but actively learn. The frame of mind is also the best to remember the educational contents presented to the player.","PeriodicalId":273456,"journal":{"name":"2013 3rd Interdisciplinary Engineering Design Education Conference","volume":"2015 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114455529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, those sounding achievements generated reasonable concerns regarding applications of traditional software engineering methodology (concepts, methods, tools, models, programming styles) to mobile software systems. Requirements of highly mobile users, limited computing power of mobile devices, security issues in mobile Web and networks, and various types of mobile communication technology stimulate a growth of emerging area - software engineering of mobile software systems, or mobile software engineering (MSE). Faculty and graduate students at the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at Bradley University (Peoria, Il, USA) are involved into collaborative “student-faculty” research, design and development project aimed at design and development of pioneering MSE curriculum. This project is aimed at 1) research of MSE-focused programming methodologies, 2) analysis models in MSE, 3) design and development models in MSE, including architectural models, information models, functional models, interaction models, navigation models, graphic user interface (GUI) hierarchical models, 4) analysis of integrated development environments (IDEs) for various mobile platforms (Android, Windows Phone, etc.), 5) testing strategies and techniques for mobile software systems, 6) mobile software quality management, 7) security issues of mobile software systems, and 8) MSE-focused implementation methods. To prevent the lessons from being turned into a course on using specific software, we have prepared a model of fully contextualized lessons, where the practical reality of the manufacturing process is discussed, not only the functioning of the software tools. The content schedule was organized according to the main manufacturing processes found in the metal-mechanical industry. Thus, the fact of drawing a simple model, adding data relating to the production process in question, makes it clear that inducing the student to seek such information for resolution of the drawings, trains them in the aspect of research, problem solving and handling software.","PeriodicalId":273456,"journal":{"name":"2013 3rd Interdisciplinary Engineering Design Education Conference","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127716205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
