{"title":"Designing emerging technologies for and with neurodiverse users","authors":"V. Motti","doi":"10.1145/3328020.3353946","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1145/3328020.3353946","url":null,"abstract":"This paper presents the findings of a literature review on smart technologies for neurodiverse users. The analysis of the literature indicates that most technologies implemented consist of games to train neurodiverse individuals on self-regulation, attention, and communication skills. The studies are conducted in the field, often involving a limited number of participants. The age of the participants is skewed towards children and the gender of the participant sample is predominantly male. The studies combine mixed-methods, including observations, interviews, and usability evaluations. The participants include end users, as well as caregivers and practitioners. Neurodiversity is prevalent, and emerging technologies are promising to assist neurodiverse individuals in their daily activities. Despite the importance of involving neurodiverse users in the technology design, guidance for investigators to conduct inclusive studies is currently limited. This paper provides concrete recommendations for practitioners seeking to design UX studies to include neurodiverse users.","PeriodicalId":262930,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 37th ACM International Conference on the Design of Communication","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130219825","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this experience report, we share how we created a research blog to disseminate information about a multi-year research project to develop a social robot that will be used in educational settings. The report begins with our goals in creating a research blog, including the desire to keep community partners and the broader audience for our research project engaged and informed. We describe our approach to developing and maintaining a research blog and related social media accounts and discuss its impact. We reflect on the process of using a blog to share research findings with the public. We conclude by providing a list of best practices for other teams considering using a blog to share emerging results.","PeriodicalId":262930,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 37th ACM International Conference on the Design of Communication","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130554209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The question as to how we measure the quality of a help center remains unanswered. As the first step of a joint research initiated by Peking University and Baidu Cloud that aims to develop a set of computable metrics to evaluate the quality of help centers, this experience report shares the results of data analysis on correlation between user behavioral data and technical documentation quality. The documents and data we use are a suite of cloud computing services provided by Baidu Cloud. The report begins with an introduction of the research goal; following reviews on the related work, it then lays out the design of the experiments with user data collected from Baidu Cloud. In our experiments, we categorize all documents into three groups and try to identify which metrics would affect documentation quality most. The result shows that the key index that contributes most to the model is PV/UV. At last, the report concludes with our current experimental efforts and future work in our plan.","PeriodicalId":262930,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 37th ACM International Conference on the Design of Communication","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129427857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We argue that these comments provide a rich source of untapped data for understanding how users experience mHealth apps from users' perspectives. We propose that the preliminary findings from this study can be used to inform the development and design of mHealth apps in the future from a patient/user-centered perspective, especially those that rely on citizen first responders.","PeriodicalId":262930,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 37th ACM International Conference on the Design of Communication","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125801107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While evidence-based practices matter and should continue to factor into medical decisions, many local resources are underutilized [4, 5]. This experience report documents how participatory, community-based User-Experience (UX) [6] was used to inform the design of a glossary to effectively facilitate how bilingual (Spanish and English-speaking) individuals on the Mexico-U.S. border interface with end-of-life (EOL) terminology. The report highlights the importance of expanding the boundaries of health-related communication design beyond single, static, dominant language ideologies. It describes lessons learned relative to UX, localization, language, and interdisciplinary collaboration.","PeriodicalId":262930,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 37th ACM International Conference on the Design of Communication","volume":"192 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134480753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It underscores the gaps in designer knowledge about disabled bodies. The research paper also draws the attention of the designer community to the limited understanding we presently possess of the disabled people's notions of, and expectations from, satisfying user experiences. It proposes a multi-step process for shifting the focus of design activity from a \"medical model of accessibility design\" that retrofits normative designs to the needs of users with disabilities to developing an \"accessible user experience model (AUX)\" of design that counts these users as design collaborators, possessors of special knowledge about disabled bodies, and untapped sources of innovative designs that might offer additional design features for all users.","PeriodicalId":262930,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 37th ACM International Conference on the Design of Communication","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133597203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
