The virtual robot observes a rigged avatar created in our photogrammetry facility and embodying a VR user. We are particularly interested in verbal human/robot interactions, which can be combined with the robot’s sensor data for grounded language learning. Because virtual scenes, tasks, and robots are easily reconfigured compared to their physical analogs, our approach proves extremely versatile in preparing a wide range of robot scenarios for an array of use cases.","PeriodicalId":256204,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces Abstracts and Workshops (VRW)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134291718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, most of the VR volleyball games mainly concentrate on modeling the game playing, rather than supporting an emotional experience. We introduce a data-driven framework to enhance the user’s emotional experience and engagement by building emotional virtual characters in VR volleyball games. This framework enables virtual characters to arouse emotions according to the game state and express emotions through facial expressions. Evaluation results demonstrate our framework has benefits to enhance user’s emotional experience and engagement.","PeriodicalId":256204,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces Abstracts and Workshops (VRW)","volume":"85 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113975163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our idea was inspired by rapid eyeball movement (REM) often observed in lucid dreams. A within-group experiment was conducted where participants experienced four different VR scenarios with both navigation methods. The results suggested that using Eye-gaze as a navigation method is viable in VR (similar travel distance, speed, and time), and that the angle between the Eye-gaze ray and the Head-ray is significantly higher in all four scenes with the Eye-tracking steering method than the HMD Head-ray one.","PeriodicalId":256204,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces Abstracts and Workshops (VRW)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123916515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a commonly used technique, visible and near-infrared (VNIR) spectrometers onboard orbiting satellites capture reflectance data at different wavelengths, which in turn gives insight about the minerals present and the overall composition of the terrain. In select locations on Mars, rovers have also conducted up close in-situ investigation of the same terrains examined by orbiters, allowing direct comparisons at different spatial scales. In this work, we build Planetary Prism, a virtual reality tool to visualize orbital and ground data around NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover’s ongoing traverse in Gale Crater. We have built a 3D terrain along Curiosity’s traverse using rover images, and within it we visualize satellite data as polyhedrons, superimposed on the terrain. This system provides perspectives of VNIR spectroscopic data from a satellite aligned with ground images from the rover, allowing the user to explore both the physical aspects of the terrain and their relation to the mineral composition. The result is a system that provides seamless rendering of data sets at vastly different scales.","PeriodicalId":256204,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces Abstracts and Workshops (VRW)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128012233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, these exercises come with many disadvantages, especially the cost, the complexity of implementation, the lack of replicability, and agility. The project aims to create customizable Virtual Reality simulations in existing environments. In this article, we detail our approach dedicated to using VR for a fire in a University Research Lab involving a game master managing the scenario, five people, interacting and acting conjunctly within this environment, and several coordinators the rescue process.","PeriodicalId":256204,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces Abstracts and Workshops (VRW)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121155203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the creators to provide users with the immersive experience they intend, it is necessary to naturally guide the user’s gaze to relevant spots in the virtual space. In this paper, we propose a subtle gaze guidance method for 360° content combining two techniques; gradual brightness modulation and termination of modulation by gaze approaching the guidance area. The experimental results show that our method significantly contributes to a more natural and less disturbing viewing experience while maintaining relatively high guidance performance.","PeriodicalId":256204,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces Abstracts and Workshops (VRW)","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129217598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Of the many factors affecting the effectiveness of training in VR, the arousal levels of the users merit a closer examination. Though subjective methods of measuring arousal exist in VR literature, there is potential in using cost-effective sensors to directly measure these from bio-signals generated by the nervous system. We introduce the design of preliminary observations from a pilot study exploring user’s arousal levels and performance while executing a series of fine motor skill tasks (buzzwire tracing). Future directions of the work are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":256204,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces Abstracts and Workshops (VRW)","volume":"276 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129351288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a proof of concept, the team chose two datasets from NYC Open Data; COVID-19 infection cases and rates per zip code and vehicular traffic rates within the five boroughs of New York City. To foster unexplored insights into the relationship between these data, we developed a virtual reality application that provides a stronger sense of embodiment and ownership of urban visualization analysis when manipulating 3D virtual maps for comparison in a VE.","PeriodicalId":256204,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces Abstracts and Workshops (VRW)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129037491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
