The A1 model is used in modelling. This model contains specific onymic signs present in its functional members. The urbanonymic formation has observable tendencies towards honorification and localization. The tendency towards honorification is shown by the glorification of contemporary and historical persons and events. The tendency towards localization retains the older names of the city and city parts and the names of contemporary national or transnational natural sites. Based on the urbanonymic formation norm determined by the presented tendencies, the modelling subsequently yielded mostly two-member models with a predominance of HCH and PÚ functional members. The VL and FA functional members are moderately frequent and the PC and PN functional members are sparse. The most frequent model is A1 = PÚ + Ú, with A1 = HCH + U, A1 = U + HCH, A1 = VL + U and A1 = (U) + PÚ being relatively frequent. Other two-member models are infrequent. One-member models did not occur, and three-member models were sparse. The presented models and modelling process are a contribution to the development of the Czecho-Slovak school of onomastic modelling.","PeriodicalId":237233,"journal":{"name":"Nová filologická revue","volume":" 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141823924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this article is to identify the syntactic, semantic and syntactic-semantic ways of impersonal expression and to analyse the frequency of their use within contemporary texts, published between years 1980 and 2020, of the literary, publicistic and scientific functional style. Coming to the conclusion, for both publicistic and scientific functional styles it is the category of the semantic impersonality that becomes more typical with, approximately, 40% of occurrences in each functional style in total. In comparison, the syntactic impersonal way of expression is most typical for the literary functional style with 60,8% of its examples in general. As for the least developed categories, while the syntactic- semantic ways of impersonal expression are found to the least extent in the publicistic and also in the literary functional style, for the scientific functional style is the category of the syntactic impersonality. To sum up, the impersonal expression is documented the most in the publicistic functional style, on the other hand, it is the literary functional style in which the lowest number of impersonal forms is registered in total.","PeriodicalId":237233,"journal":{"name":"Nová filologická revue","volume":" 73","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141824851","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the analysis is to identify the stylistic constants of the individual style of the observed preacher. Balek's communications are differentiated into narrative and reflective and maintain a stable compositional structure. His constant themes and motifs include exorcism and related phenomena, sexual deviance, and criticism and irony of church morality. Lexical specifics include obscene names in collocations with sacred expressions, diminutives and hybrids of Russian and Slovak lexemes. From the point of view of grammar, the high frequency and accumulation of transitions, atypical and unusual verb and adjective forms, and a complex syntactic structure are characteristic. Several phonetic elements of dialect provenance and suprasegments such as shifted accent, emphasis or intonation nuances fulfill the ironic and characterization function.","PeriodicalId":237233,"journal":{"name":"Nová filologická revue","volume":" 30","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141826408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the contribution is to describe, compare, and typologize the onymic models of standardized urbanonyms of two Slovak towns located in the Gemer region: Rožňava and Revúca. During the analysis, we focus attention on the nature of the model structure and the number of onymic models and types of onymic models of the investigated group of proper nouns, as well as on the types, frequency representation, and lexical rendering of the functional members characterizing the analyzed models. Modern linguistic trends active since the 1920s have also influenced Slovak linguistics significantly. Based on the examination of scholarly articles from that period, this paper aims to assemble a selection of information related to the establishment of a new linguistic trend – structuralism – in Slovak linguistics in the context of Czechoslovakia. The cultivation of theoretical discussions in the post-war period – connected with the organization of linguistic research in Slovakia – is observed on the basis of contemporary Slovak and Czech linguistic texts on selected linguistic topics written from the 1930s to the 1970s. Apart from that, publications evaluating the presence of structuralism in Slovak linguistics are also examined (e.g. Anton Popovič, Ľubomír Ďurovič, Ján Kačala, Rudolf Krajčovič and František Štraus). The paper focuses on the beginnings of structuralism in Slovak linguistics, devoting attention to the Bratislava Linguistic Circle (1945) and its activities. Views of neogrammarianism and structuralism are observed, for in Slovak linguistics such views influenced the way the Czechoslovak question was perceived, while also informing research into phonology, dialectology, morphology and syntax, as well as lexis and language culture. The paper also traces the impact of particular views on educational practice.","PeriodicalId":237233,"journal":{"name":"Nová filologická revue","volume":" 77","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141825293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The CEFR emphasizes mediation in its action-oriented approach. Mediation is a language activity in which the user/learner acts as an intermediary between different inter-locutors when the language of the original text is not understandable to the recipient. The mediator may convey meanings within the same language or between languages. The objective of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of the current state of knowledge pertaining to the notion of mediation in language teaching and learning, as an emerging concept in language education. The article provides a brief overview of mediation activities and strategies. The second part explores its potential for effective teaching and learning, aiming to determine whether mediation is relevant in the context of English for Medical Purposes. Practicing mediation skills would merit greater attention in the classroom. This involves designing and developing mediation activities and strategies.","PeriodicalId":237233,"journal":{"name":"Nová filologická revue","volume":" 20","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141825860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing from a corpus of 534 coupled pairs in which the swearword was used, the research examines translation strategies adopted by six translators to explore variations in expressiveness and the use of highly offensive lexis. The analysis shows rather heterogenous approach towards the treatment of offensive language and inconsistency in expressiveness not only between translators but also across different episodes of the series. Such variability can lead to a lack of cohesiveness in characterization and may disrupt viewer immersion, leading to potential dissatisfaction with the viewing experience.","PeriodicalId":237233,"journal":{"name":"Nová filologická revue","volume":" 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141827681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
