This Class Action Research (CAR) aims at pinpointing the intervention of Crossword Puzzle as a medium of teaching-learning vocabulary on Personal Recount Text. Collaborating with the classroom teacher, its use in one class of eight graded students in a public junior high school in West Java is conducted together with the instruments of observation and tests. It is found out that Crossword Puzzle radiates the teaching-learning process positively on account of students’ enthusiasm and responses as well as profoundly inclines the mean of Pre-test, 40.61 to the one of Post-test, 80.60 aside from the majority of the students’ achievement to the success indicator score on vocabulary mastery in one Cycle. Despite its benefits to other parties, it is advisable that further research is to fill the gaps on other writing genre with discrepant learning contexts.","PeriodicalId":227403,"journal":{"name":"English Journal Literacy Utama","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128079873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The descriptive qualitative research method assesses the Transitivity Process of students constructing recount texts, which involves data collection, classification, analysis, and interpretation. This study's document includes eleven students authoring recount texts and 603 data comprising clauses chosen from the text. Following the results, in students' recount text, there are six types of transitivity processes: material process, relational process, mental process, linguistic process, existential process, and behavioral process. The material process is the most used, accounting for 390 (64.67%) of all occurrences in the overall data. The relational method is the second most widely used, accounting for 90 (14.92%) events in the data. The mental process is the third most used, accounting for 72 (11.94%) occurrences in the overall data. The behavioral process is used with 21 (3.48%) occurrences from the actual data. In comparison, the verbal process is used with 15 (2.48%) of the total data, while the existential process is used with 15 (2.48%). The most common transitivity process type in all students' recount texts, accounting for 390 events, is Material Process.","PeriodicalId":227403,"journal":{"name":"English Journal Literacy Utama","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131765775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The characters are mostly well-known fictional superheroes and active worldwide, but usually based in USA. The mimesis analysis was done by comparing some aspects in the real life and those in the comics. Those comparison aspects will be seen and examined to point out the true mimesis used by the writers and how Indonesia is pictured there. The mimesis theory was taken from Krofli? (2011). There, Indonesia was illustrated in three ways, i.e.: 1) by the picture; 2) by a character’s explanation; and 2) by both. The comparison aspects were divided into two parts, i.e.: 1) the condition of Indonesia when they were written; and 2) the plots and their conotative meanings. Those illustrations and comparisons resulted 3 different point of views, i.e., positive, negative, or neutral. There are 30 data analized and it resulted only 12 data with full mimesis similarities and 18 data with partly similarities or completely different mimesis with the real conditions. The other aspects analyzed was about their description of Indonesia as a whole, and it turns out that only 3 data that have positive vibes, 11 data say negative things about Indonesia, and the other 16 are neutral.","PeriodicalId":227403,"journal":{"name":"English Journal Literacy Utama","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122459232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method used for this study is descriptive qualitative. This study uses Paltridge (2012) thematic progression and Halliday (1985) theme and rheme as grounded theory. The result of the study showed that the most used theme from the news text is textual theme and the pattern of thematic progression used for this news text is multiple themes or split rheme. The result for the kind of theme used by the news text is considered from the number of times textual theme used in the news text which is about 23 times or 57.5%. The pattern of thematic progression used by the news text is multiple theme or split rheme because there are a mix of constant theme and linear theme on the overall pattern of the news text. Based on the pattern of thematic progression the number of constant themes used in the news text is 10 times and linear theme is three times, which makes it considered as a multiple theme or split rheme.","PeriodicalId":227403,"journal":{"name":"English Journal Literacy Utama","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124546125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The participants included 30 students who were engaged in online learning during the pandemic. The study employed three audio-recorded post-teaching conferences and three guided group interviews to gather data on the participants' online learning experiences during the pandemic. The qualitative data was analyzed using content analysis techniques. The results indicated that, in addition to the challenges that arise in online learning, such as mastery of learning materials and the volume of assignments given by instructors, students also expected more detailed feedback from their instructors across various teaching contexts, for several reasons. The findings suggest that differences in perceptions regarding online learning and the need for students to develop more independent learning strategies and recommendations are important topics for further discussion.","PeriodicalId":227403,"journal":{"name":"English Journal Literacy Utama","volume":"205 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116184700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
