For there to be a successful monetary policy arrangement in place, there is the need for policymakers and or regulators to have a precise assessment of the timing and the result of such policies within the economy. The transmission mechanism theory as a tool that defines how policy variations in nominal money stock or short-term interest rate affect real economic variables not limited to employment as well as aggregate output. The theory of transmission mechanism comes through several channels including the interest rate, exchange rate, asset price, credit as well as the expectation channels. This article assesses and analyzes the various channels in the theory.","PeriodicalId":222637,"journal":{"name":"University of Southern California Center for Law & Social Science (CLASS) Research Paper Series","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130248757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An Empirical Assessment of the Effectiveness of Macroprudential Policies 宏观审慎政策有效性的实证评估

{"title":"An Empirical Assessment of the Effectiveness of Macroprudential Policies","authors":"Frederick Anning","doi":"10.2139/ssrn.3183425","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.3183425","url":null,"abstract":"The issues regarding macroprudential policy have taken great stride in aftermath of the 2007-2008 crisis; policymakers, as well as regulators, have now been working tirelessly to ensure that there will no such crisis in the nearest future. It is in view of this that we are trying to assess empirically the impact of macroprudential policies employed by regulators and policymakers. It is undeniable that it is somewhat difficult in realizing consistent results empirically due to the low level of statistical data as well as the fact that macroeconomic models employed in financial and economic systems do not take into accounts various interconnected economic systems. Regulators are faced with the challenge of empirical assessment of macroprudential policy both economic and financially since results could quite vague. Because of this, numerous methodologies have been employed in assessing the results, some of the employed methods are not limited to assessing macro stress tests, counterfactual analysis, microdata-based analysis, regression analysis just to mention but few. Research has realized that most regulators and or policymakers normally employ the panel data method as their econometric model. One fundamental issue is the panel data does not see the problem regarding limited statistical data but rather focuses on the impact of macroprudential policy tools.","PeriodicalId":222637,"journal":{"name":"University of Southern California Center for Law & Social Science (CLASS) Research Paper Series","volume":"204 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122586373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we show a trade-off between competition and network size. Vertical separation has the advantage of softening a retailing competition, but has the disadvantage of downsizing a network size. On the other hand, vertical integration has advantage of increasing the network size, but has disadvantage of intensifying the retailing competition. In these circumstances, network effect and competition play important roles in equilibrium. Our conclusion differs sharply from the conventional results in two points. One is that it is a dominant strategy for each manufacturer to choose vertical integration if competition effect is overwhelmed by network effect. The other is that if network effect is strong, profits, consumer surplus, and social welfare are higher under vertical integration than separation.","PeriodicalId":222637,"journal":{"name":"University of Southern California Center for Law & Social Science (CLASS) Research Paper Series","volume":"191 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116519570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Igualmente, se evalua el impacto ecologico de la actividad petrolera y sus perspectivas. Se trata de un articulo de reflexion, sustentado en una amplia revision bibliografica. Se concluye que, si bien el petroleo continua siendo la principal fuente de energia y de infinidad de productos derivados del mismo, los efectos de su uso en los diferentes entornos ecologicos son altamente negativos. Igualmente, la concentracion de la actividad petrolera mundial en un pequeno grupo de paises permite que sea utilizado como medio de presion a otras naciones, o para apoyar a regimenes autoritarios. \u0000English Abstract: In this article, the socioeconomic and political importance of oil is analyzed, as a first-order resource within the global energy matrix. Likewise, the ecological impact of the oil activity and its prospects is evaluated. It is an article of reflection, based on an extensive bibliographic review. It is concluded that, although oil continues to be the main source of energy and there are many products derived from it, the effects of its use in different ecological environments are highly negative. Likewise, the concentration of world oil activity in a small group of countries allows it to be used as a means of pressure to other nations, or to support authoritarian regimes.","PeriodicalId":222637,"journal":{"name":"University of Southern California Center for Law & Social Science (CLASS) Research Paper Series","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130310383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By using PISA data from South Korea, this paper suggests that the effects of single-sex schooling and a student-teacher’s gender matching are heterogeneous across different student groups. The gender-matching school environments are most positive to non-cognitive outcomes of girls at the highest tail of cognitive performance levels. By attending an all-girls school and being taught by a female teacher, high performing girls are as motivated and interested in pursuing careers in STEM fields as boys. However, single-sex schooling and female teachers do not produce positive effects on girls in lower performing groups. For median girls, single-sex schooling can even be detrimental to their non-cognitive performance. These results corroborate that gender-matching school environments can be a useful tool to promote female talent in STEM fields, but the effect cannot be generalized for public education for all students.","PeriodicalId":222637,"journal":{"name":"University of Southern California Center for Law & Social Science (CLASS) Research Paper Series","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117149672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we present a model that explains the impact of formal insurance on informal risk sharing and, subsequently, the dynamics of other-regarding preferences. We use a field experiment to test the predictions of the model with rural households in Mexico. Consistent with the model predictions, we find that when shocks are collective, there is a crowding-out effect on transfers and a decrease in trust on insured participants. However, when shocks are idiosyncratic, we fail to confirm the predictions of the model. Transfers to non-insured members are significantly higher when insurance is available to some of the network members than in a control treatment when insurance is not available. This unexpected crowding-in effect on transfers leads to an increase in trust among non-insured participants. These findings suggest that there is a need to find optimal insurance designs that minimizes the crowding-out effect of formal insurance on informal risk sharing and other-regarding preferences.","PeriodicalId":222637,"journal":{"name":"University of Southern California Center for Law & Social Science (CLASS) Research Paper Series","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116139096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The causative factors of poverty have been identified in the form of income ineligibility to social injustice and economic system. The efforts of poverty reduction into government policy to reform the social security system for socio-economic system reform. Because poverty is a multidimensional problem, solutions that do require a set of co-ordinated action, particularly through charity. Indonesia has a large population with the problem of poverty is the target completion in economic development. However, optimizing the potential of zakat which is high on the people of Indonesia and the cooperation among stakeholders and government regulation to be a solution in reducing poverty. It is certainly different from Brunei Darussalam to the level of a small population and government revenues are high, so the management of zakat by MUIB in the form of cash grants, capital of commerce, and others are implementable can resolve the problem of poverty in this country.","PeriodicalId":222637,"journal":{"name":"University of Southern California Center for Law & Social Science (CLASS) Research Paper Series","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131648586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Trojan Horse of Corporate Integration 企业整合的特洛伊木马

{"title":"The Trojan Horse of Corporate Integration","authors":"Edward D. Kleinbard","doi":"10.2139/ssrn.2802361","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.2802361","url":null,"abstract":"The U.S. Senate Finance Committee has invested significant resources, including hearings and staff reports, to make the case for an unusual form of corporate dividend integration – a corporate dividends-paid deduction, combined with a universal shareholder dividend withholding tax collected from the firm. This proposal would not reduce the cash tax outlays of U.S. corporations in respect of distributed or retained earnings. It would not reduce the aggregate tax burdens imposed on most shareholders, and in many plausible circumstances would raise those tax costs. It is a poorly targeted response to design weaknesses in the U.S. international corporate tax system. Its efficiency gains are undeveloped and largely overstated.This unusual form of dividend integration is really designed to offer U.S. firms a quick and dirty form of costless corporate tax reform, in which their financial accounting effective tax rate decreases, but for entirely artificial reasons. It also would offer U.S. multinational firms the ability to repatriate their permanently reinvested earnings held in foreign subsidiaries and redistribute those sums to shareholders without a nominal corporate income tax charge for financial accounting purposes, but at the cost to shareholders of raising their all-in burdens beyond what could be expected in broad-scale corporate tax reform.The dividends-paid form of dividend integration has been wheeled forward in the manner of a true Trojan horse, seemingly offering a free gift of the end of double taxation, but all the while containing in its belly the agenda of U.S. multinationals desperate to record lower effective tax rates for financial statement purposes, and to escape from under the mountain of offshore earnings that are the result of their own aggressive stateless income gaming.","PeriodicalId":222637,"journal":{"name":"University of Southern California Center for Law & Social Science (CLASS) Research Paper Series","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128577429","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
